Peter Gammons reported that the Red Sox and Matt Mantei have agreed to a one year deal, I like this signing personally, i think that if Mantei gets his head out of his ass he could be a very good set-up man for Foulke

On ESPN's Free Agent tracker, they are reporting what ILWV said:

1 year, $750,000

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/features/freeagents

Matt Mantei is capable of being an elite reliever when healthy. He's got a chance in one of the biggest baseball markets (Boston) to prove he's healthy and able to return to his old form.

Best case senario: The Red Sox get an incredible setup man for $750,000.

Worst case senario: Mantei gets hurt and the Sox waste $750,000.

Overall, seems like a low risk, high reward signing.

I like the Mantei pickup a lot. He should replace Williamson, for a pretty low price, as the hard-throwing setup guy. And hopefully he'll stay healthy.

I love Theo Epstein. If I was gay, I would marry the man (yes, we can do that in this state).

Anyway, I'm not gay and I won't marry Theo, but he's friggin' brilliant.

before you start rolling out the red carpet for this guy....remember that he is damaged goods, a head case and was a virtual nothing in 2004.

couldnt your friend find a favorite pitcher who pitched in 2004?

and why would any one's favorite pitcher be Diamond back..

First we get Bausher and now Mantei? Mantei's had both his elbow and shoulder cut. How about signing some quality free agents or maybe getting a shortstop before we chase after Rule 5 players and banged up pitchers.

Guys, this was a no-risk, high-reward minor deal. I love it, but be assured, more will come. It's not like Theo's done or anything.

True they are no risk moves, but they do take up spots on the roster, or do we pay millions for guys to play in Pawtucket like BK Kim.

i was just looking...hes pretty good...5 of his 10 years in the majors hes had eras under 3.00, and in 2003 had a great year, with a 2.62 era and 68 strikeouts in 55 innings. Also, he was 29 for 32 in save opportunities.

This is a one year, $750K deal. If he gets hurt for the remainder of the season, he can be released. This guy has fantastic stuff when he's able to make it onto the mound. He's only making 2.5 times the league minimum. That's nothing. This is nowhere near the BK Kim situation.
