Aint gunna happen, guys. It's written into the collective bargaining agreement the players/owners signed.

BUT, I think it would be a good thing.

Good point Cal.....

But even though the Sox are #2 in payroll....there's a HUGE difference between $120 mil and $180 mill.

That's 6 $10 million players (V-Tek, Lowe, etc), or 3 A-Rods.

I think MLB has done a decent job of evening things out without a salary cap. The trend back in 2000/2001 was rising contracts. Now, things are evening out a little more. The only thing the MLB can't solve is the Yankees. They are out of control. They simply don't care about paying the extra $$ for revenue sharing, because they are still cutting a profit.

It's like fining Manny $100,000 for not running out a grounder. Think he cares? Nope. That's like pennies to me and you.

I think that the MLB is returning to the point where more teams are competitive, which I think is a great thing.

The only reason to have a cap would be: Control the Yankees.

Maybe they should just cap the Yankees. I was bored this morning, so I made a little chart of the current standings, and the payroll for each team. here goes: (all numbers are rounded to nearest million)

AL East:

NYY: 184 million

Bos: 127 Million

Tampa: 30 million

Toronto: 50

Balt: 52

AL Central:

White sox: 65

Twins: 53

Cleveland: 34

Detroit: 47

KC: 48

AL West:

Texas: 55

Oakland: 59

Anaheim: 101

Seattle: 82

NL East:

Phillie: 93

FLA: 42

NYM: 97

ATL: 90

MON: 41

NL Central:

STL: 83

Cubs: 90

Brewers: 27

Reds:47

'Stros: 75

Pirates: 32

NL West:

Giants:82

LA:92

Padres:55

Arizona: 70

Colorado: 65

Wooo. So I spent 15 minutes making this. See any trends? Neither do I...which proves my point. Is there a salary cap needed? No. If you have the money...spend it. We have the money, the Yankees have the moeny. 8 teams have payrolls upwards of 90 million. Guess how many are in 1st place? Actually I'll tell you. 2. And second place: 3. That leaves 3 teams with excessive payrolls NOT in first or second place. Take from that what you will: Discuss.

It also proves that just because you spend lots of money, it doesn't guarantee ANYTHING. Some teams poorly spend their money (The Mets, The Rockies)

PLUS....The Red Sox getting swept had little to do with the big-money players. Look who killed us last night:

Tony Clark, Miguel Cairo, John Flaherty.

Woop-de-freakin' do. It's not like the Yankees outbid ANYONE for these guys.

The other two nights, it was the Sox' bad defense. The Yankees didn't beat the Sox, the Sox beat themselves.

Just my point. Glad to see I didn't type all that s*** up for nothing. In case you guys were curious, there is a site to find all payrolls, all player salaries, and a lot more, from the past bunch of years.

http://asp.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/sa...es/default.aspx

It's quite entertaining to look at, and to see what Mo Vaughn is on contract for this year. He's the 7th highest paid player in the league.

Yea, there isn't a direct correlation, but i still think that a cap wouldn't be such a bad idea. Look at the NFL, just about any team can win any year.

Good chart, very interesting to look at the wasted money.

But you guys do all realize that a salary cap in baseball would mean a salary cap on the sox, and that our payroll would most likely go down.

PROS for salary cap:

Will eventually lead to lowering prices at Fenway and all ballparks

Every team's fate will be decided by the intelligence of their general management, and who they can sign.

Scott Boras will finally f*** himself

All teams are pretty much equal, and start from zero.

CONS for salary cap:

All teams are pretty much equal, and start from zero.

Teams already have players, and would have to renegotiate contracts, and that would have to be allowed, making an already complicated process even more difficult.

The Sox/Yanks rivalry may die. We have always been the underdogs, the yankees the big spenders, if both teams are equal, or god forbid, the sox are better, then the bitter hatred of a rivalry we have may vanish.

Just some thoughts, feel free to add onto any list.

I did that on purpose. Is it a pro or con? For teams like the Expos...pro, no question. For the Red Sox... I don't know. We'd have equal payroll with the Yankees, but also for everyone else. Me personally, I'm against the salary cap (as you've seen in this thread,) but I put that one as both pro or con, because it's tough to tell.

The cap could be set at 100 million dollars. Players with the salaries of Manny, A Rod, and Giambi are too damn much. In the NFL the highest paid player makes 11 million dollars (McNabb.) The point i'm trying to make is, parity is awesome. I like to watch a football game and not be able to know who's going to win. In baseball, you know a team like the Yankees will always make the playoffs. I hate that, I think its time the small market teams started to be able to win.

I don't think a 100 million salary cap is really going to even out ANYthing except the Yankees. Keep in mind, most teams are under 100 million, and some of those teams are still cutting payroll.

There's a lot of parity in MLB this year. Hell, the Devil Rays are almost competitive!

I think a push for a salary cap is just going to piss the players off and piss the Yankees off.

Bottom Line: Most teams have the money to spend on teams, they choose not to for greater profit. The Yankees spend without thinking about profit, they think about winning.

I stand by my statement that the only thing a Salary Cap will control is the Yankees. Just about everyone else controls themselves.
