Prospect will pitch: The Red Sox will give highly-touted prospect Jon Papelbon the start for Thursday's game, and Francona is looking forward to seeing him pitch.

"I've never seen this kid," said Francona. "I'm excited. This is worth getting on a bus for a couple of hours. I've heard a lot of really good things about him. He could get lit up tomorrow. That's not going to change the organization's view. But from what everybody says, this kid is gonna be pretty good, so it will be fun to watch him pitch."

The 24-year-old Papelbon went 12-7 at Class A Sarasota last year, posting a 2.64 ERA in 24 starts.

Game's at 1:00 PM, if anyone's going to watch

In his first start for Portland, Pap went 6 innings giving up two solo homers (5 total hits) while striking out 7 and walking none. Portland is a homerun happy ballpark, so don't be surprised if the HR numbers rise this season, but I expect the peripherals to remain great.

Papelbon has also been very good, but not as impressive as Lester when you factor in that Pap is 24 and Lester is 21. 10 starts, 61.2 IP, 42 H (7 HR), 53/17 K/BB, 2.48 ERA. He still has great stuff and could be a #2 starter for us, but he needs to pitch well, and quickly, due to his age.

id like to see papelbon get called up if clement goes on the DL

that wouldnt be a bad choice. he got his first win in AAA last night giving up 1 run and striking out 8 in five innings of work. he wouldnt be my choice but he wouldnt be a bad choice.

Is Papelbon getting called up to the BoSox or AAA? Im confused by this quote at the top of the page.

hes already in triple A, Schilling should return the next game Clement was supposed to start which should still be an easy game for him to do, Game 1 Against Kansas City in Fenway on August 1st. I do believe Schilling has his stuff and Sox need him now more than ever to come back

I think he should get the start....what better way then to bring the kid in against Kansas City. Best chance to succeed in his first start and would give him some confidence. Then if that confidence were to continue he could jump in the bullpen.

Delcarmen should not be the first and last call up for the Sox. Youkilis needs to get called back up after he is destroying AAA. Hansen may get a chance as well. Lets have the kids get a chance to save the Sox depth.

Tony G pretty much has the 2nd base/shortstop area pretty well--man oh man he proved he could do defense last night for sure--Alex Cora will become expendable im think when Mark Bellhorn comes back off the DL, then they can move Youkilis up, but who knows maybe Youkilis will get the call up if the Twins deal does go through with him becoming the new starting 3rd baseman.

Papelbon's only been up to AAA for a month or so. He'll be ready for the jump soon enough, let him get a few more starts under his belt.

i think tony g should play against righties and bellhorn against lefties

I don't think Bellhorn should see the field again. It's been so refreshing being able to go through the lineup without having an automatic strike out in there every 9 hitters.

Bellhorn should never see Fenway Park or any other baseball diamond again..he sucks!! It has been so relaxing watching the games without him striking out. Plus Tony g is better in the field anyway and Alex Cora is a step up from Bellhorn. I say..SEE YA LATER MARK!!

Good thing im not in charge? Good thing your not in charge. Bellhorn has done nothing this year! Why would we give him another chance? He leads the league in strikeouts. Every other at bat he strikes out. He did the same thing last year, except you want to give him another chance because all you remember is his great playoff run. thats about all hes done. Ill give him one week when he comes back, if he continues to suck..he should see nothing but the bench.

So far I dont see Alex Cora being the one to last long for the season since Bellhorn is coming back next August, with Tony G and Bellhorn probably splitting time at 2nd base--though big props to Alex Cora's homerun yesterady, i wasnt really expecting that one since it was just his 29th in 8 seasons

Graffiano has been pretty good for the Red Sox so far, he's hitting .318 in 22 AB's, and has struck out 3 times. Bellhorn has struck out 3 times in several games. I hope Bellhorn finds his stroke, and has a good 2nd half, but all signs point against it.

Aside from Terry's loyalty, who is the most versitile of the three ? I think we'd agree that the Sox will only keep two of the three ( Tony G, Cora, and Bellhorn ).

I realize this is WAY off topic, but I'll chime in anyway. If I had to keep 2 of those three, honestly, I'd choose Tony G and Alex Cora. Bellhorn has the most power of all three, but we've seen what he's capable of and it's nothing spectacular. It seems to be that both Graffanino and Cora are equal to or better than Bellhorn defensively, and Tony G is just as valuable offensively.

It pains me to say this because I know Soxie's coming back with some negativity my way.... but those two, in my opinion, render Mark Bellhorn obsolete.

Jon will be getting his first ML start tomorrow vs. the Twins at Fenway. He will be facing Brad Radke.

i've read that he's consistently 92-94 with his fastball, and he was voted as having the best breaking ball in the system.

And Schilling was raving about his splitter, Curt says his split is pretty nasty. And he seems to be a competitor and all that, and if he made a believer out of Schilling, then heII, that's enough testimonial for me.

And you couldn't pick a better tutor than a guy like Schilling, i guess they did nothing but talk pitching the whole time Curt was in Triple A. Long live Papelbon! LOL.
