BOSTON -- The Red Sox delivered good news on the contract front Friday, announcing that they reached a two-year contract extension with DH/first baseman David Ortiz.

The deal includes an option for a third year, which means Ortiz -- perhaps Boston's top clutch hitter the past two seasons -- could remain with the Red Sox through the 2007 season.

By knocking out this deal with Ortiz, the Red Sox were able to retain one of their seven potential free agents this offseason.

Nomar Garciaparra, Pedro Martinez, Jason Varitek, Derek Lowe, Scott Williamson and Pokey Reese all are in the final year of their contracts.

But Ortiz joins Manny Ramirez, Curt Schilling, Keith Foulke and Johnny Damon as key players who are under contract for 2005 or beyond.

Ortiz blossomed during the 2003 season, his first in Boston. Backed by a torrid second half, the left-handed-hitting slugger had 31 homers, 101 RBIs, 39 doubles and a .592 slugging percentage. He finished fifth in the AL MVP voting.

With Garciaparra and Trot Nixon out of the lineup with injuries, Ortiz has gotten off to a solid start this season, leading the team with 10 homers and 31 RBIs entering Friday night's game against the Blue Jays.

It's 2 years worth 12.5 million with a 3rd year option. IMO this is really a steal for the Sox. I'm very happy with this deal. This is only further proof that Theo is a genius. Maybe now Fernando Cuza (Ortiz and Pedro's agent) can convince Petey to resign during the offseason? I know I'm definitely looking forward to see Ortiz bashing homers over the monster for at least 2 more years.

I think they hit the nail on the head with what he was worth. I wouldn't have wanted to pay more than 6-7 mil/year for Ortiz. He's good, sure, but he isn't well rounded like some other players, so he really shouldn't command a double digit salary. But I'm glad they got him signed, he can swing a bat.

I doubt it'll really have any effect on any possible Pedro signing though. Even though they share an agent, and the signing went without any hiccups, Pedro is too self-centered to really notice those things.
