    Now I think you're being more realistic. And I think your rationale is spot-on. Assuming health, Casas/Mayer/Romy should be fine. The only place where we don't have much ceiling is at 2nd. Polanco could supply that, and at a reasonable price.

    Yes on Schwarber. A lot of chatter about Bregman going to the Cubs, but relegating Shaw to the bench or AAA, after the second half he had, would seem counterproductive.

    I wouldn't be surprised if Tyler was given a chance in ST to win a BP role. We have lefties, but all are either SPs or our closer. We currently have no situational lefties. I assume 1-2 of the lefty SPs will be assigned to BP duty, But Drohan and Moran likely start in the minors, and if Early and/or Tolle don't win a starting gig, they too will be in the minors.

    Has anything been written that Tyler Samaniego was considered a deal breaker, or just one of three guys that Pitt offered?

    I agree 100%. I always said the long-term plan was Arias at SS and Mayer at 3rd. And Bregman was the bridge. I'd be surprised if we signed Bregman.

    Think in terms of hitters and pitchers. We have 23 out of the 40 are pitchers, which is par for the course. NYY 20 TOR 21 BAL 22 TBR 22 The delineation between starter and relief is meaningless. Very few minor league RPs will be on the 40.

    I don't see any end to our window. In fact, I'm not sure the window has fully opened. In 2030, we'll still have: Crochet Bello Anthony Campbell Rafaela Harrison Narvaez Mayer Early Tolle Does anyone in baseball have a better 2030 team than us?

    If Painter was a sure bet, he'd be untouchable. The objective is always, always to see how much of a gamble a prospect is worth.

    I'm wondering if he might be pitching his way out of Boston. He was a 5th rounder and not ranked, and had a high walk rate throughout the minors. I was impressed with his pitching, but I am wondering if the outstanding 19.1 IPs has pushed his value past his true talent. That kind of decision way, way above my pay grade, but sometimes it's okay to cash in some chips. Especially if someone else really likes those chips.

    The trade is TBD. Devers had a .807 OPS with SF. If we sign Schwarber or Alonso, and they give us only an .807, there will be rioting in the streets.

    In my second job, the person I eventually replaced was frighteningly poor. It took no effort to automate a lot of what they did. So all my boss had to do was to wake me once a month to push a couple of buttons. Then I had to stumble out of my office, complain about hellish conditions, and hand over my reports.

    I've worked for two not-for-profits for maybe 30 years. Less money, less headaches, better quality of life. I worked for one very large company, and they simply threw money at everything. And that has its upsides, but in the long run, I preferred my time at the NFPs, especially my final one. I've been blessed.

    You get me Painter and I'll go into hibernation for the winter. I like Chandler and Burns a whole lot, but I like Painter even more. But unless his arm is falling off, no way that DD trades him.

    It feels like setting up dominoes. Alonso is a decent enough target at 4 years, but then we need to line up a trade for Casas. That makes it more complicated, but more interesting. If we sign Alonso, trade Duran + Casas for Tong + Vientos + Mauricio.

    When I first joined a really big company, with real money, it was a culture shock to find out that even the people working for me had better resumes than me. It's a little disconcerting to be sitting at a closing meeting without being able to add anything to the conversation.

    We're better than we use to be, but TB and SD are the gold standard maxing out pitcher contribution.

    We absolutely did not hit in the playoffs, but if Duran doesn't drop a fly ball, or if the runner was sent, etc.

    We were #7 in scoring last year and had an OPS of .745. Ignoring Okamoto, since I can't find good projections for him, a team of Casas, Polanco, Story, Mayer, Anthony, Rafaela, Abreu, Yoshida, and Narvaez, projects to an OPS of .752, according to Steamer.

    Each idea stands on its own, though you could add Okomoto + either Kim or Polanco, though I don't see that as necessary.

    Do we need to fix the power void? We were 6th in scoring despite not having anyone with more than 25 HRs, and finished only 20 runs behind the Brewers for 3rd place in scoring, who themselves didn't have a 30-HR hitter.

    It depends on price, of course, but the guys I would consider: Trade Duran++ for a #2 or #2 potential. Okamoto, because he is righty, and his ability to play 1st and 3rd makes him a great fit if we are going with Casas and Mayer. Even if those two, plus Yoshida, come out firing, Okadata can still get a lot of ABs with days off, tough lefties, injuries, etc. I'm still a fan of Kim. Signing him to SS and moving Story to 2nd is a huge improvement to our fielding. Polanco is a good fit at 2nd, but only at two years. All three of these guys are cheap enough that, if Miami offers to trade us Alcantara, for example, we can do so without worrying about the payroll. And while no one is going to like it, and at the risk of being included in the billionaire bootlicker club (the BBC) there would be some merit to dropping under the cap for one season to reset the penalties. Regardless of JH's wealth, losing a #2, a #5, and $1M international spending is still a consideration.

    It's all about marginal utility. Right now, he's out 4th outfielder, which makes him a DH. FG projects a slightly lower OPS than Yoshida. So for us, all he does is add speed. For a team without a CF, he adds 4 WAR. It's the same with KC, and pitchers like Crawford, Harrison, etc. No matter how one values them, they are more likely to be valued higher by other teams.

    I remember when I detoxed from caffeine. The pain was really bad. I knew I drank a lot of coffee, but I hadn't realized how addicted I was, or what the physical withdrawal effects were going to be.

    I was going to mention that he is from my Bronx; but he didn't go to HS here, so I didn't bother.

    I don't think so. FG has Yoshida as .768, and Schwarber as .833. With limited money, upgrading for another 65 points isn't worth the $135M/5.
