  1. Well said. To improve chase rate, you need to stay back longer. Its about the approach. Telling someone to get better at recognizing spin is wasted breath. And in 2025, staying back is a fools errand You get better at Ks by learning to live with them. I once had a friend tell me, his solution at poker was to stop losing money. Sounds great. But he then became scared money, and his overall game went south.
  2. I would also love that Gio deal for us.
  3. 3@22.5 with an opt out after 1 or 4 @22.5
  4. Gio gets more, whether thats so much more that its no longer in the same "ballpark" - depends on what you mean by ballpark. Total dollars +/- 15%, no Gio does better than that.
  5. Prob be cleaner if one of your catcher is one of the platoons, but wont always be the case.
  6. Teams are starting to consider not even carrying a true backup catcher anymore. 4 platoon players on the bench teach one to catch so he can double-serve I dont think its long before teams go back to carrying 5 bench players. 5 platoons/team. ANd if your catcher has equal splits, your backup catcher is whomever can (and I do not mean whomever can "well")
  7. If you could have 40 people on your active roster, there would be like 4 position players in the mlb who would not be platooning Platooning isnt a problem, get use to it.
  8. The armed forces draft?
  9. Fair enough. I dont mind looking at a PW for Cease trade and saying no. I do mind bowing out of the rental market entirely. In my opinion, you have to be willing to overpay when the time is right, and the time is right. That doesnt mean you take any deal thrown your way. PW for Cease wasnt one I was personally hoping they make.
  10. Acquiring and hoarding prospects doesnt work, see the success of teams that flip prospects vs those that hoard them. I dont mind not wanting to pull the trigger on Cease specfically. Im just glad they spent a prospect. I dont care if they got a bullpen pitcher with a 14 ERA. The fact that they bought something is a good sign to me. Hoarders need therapy.
  11. I have friends who Ive been in fantasy leagues for years. They have never made a trade once in a decade. When there is a trade, they are immediately focused on what we gave up. They did not want to make the Crochet trade, or the Celtics trade that brought in KP and Jrue. They overrate our own guys, and poopoo the importance of the deadline every year. They are trade averse. These guys also have a basement full of chotskies and a DVD collection in the thousands. All of their stuff is taken care of. They collect, they hoard and they are good friends, but I just am not that way. ANd I dont want my teams to operate that way, because hoarding is not always good sports management. Every decision is case by case. So yes, there are times when you overpay. There are times when you rent.
  12. The established market is the established market, and we need to operate within. If every trade is judged by expected WAR over remaining time of control of outgoing vs incoming, then you are just never going to go for it. You do have to be willing to overpay. How much and when does not depend on as much on WAR in vs WAR out. On NESN they said the sox are perennially too focused on what they are giving, not what they are getting , and I kind of agree. I like the May trade MORE than I liked the Paxton trade because we gave up more. I know that seems backwards, and from a "winning the trade" standpoint it is. But I just never ever wanna be back to where we are running around with our hands up "my prospects! my prospects!" We have a young team that is competitive. We dont need to win every trade, and I would argue that its that very mentality that has us trigger-shy since DD.
  13. Who even focuses on "the pennant" anymore? Do we care about World Series losers? Im not an all or nothing guy but the championships count for a lot. Winning the AL, who really cares? It just means you made the WS. Very weird to be all like "I only care about accomplishments!" So you better win the AL. Winning the AL and losing in the series, isnt all that different from losing a round or 2 earlier, right?
  14. Intangibles are a thing, and by definition, are not quantifiable. This is why I think AC should be promoted. Bresbot/Bloombot/algorithmbot there is something human that is missing. This is why Bres was rightfully called a stiff, and I want that dude who was sh*tcanned for that back. Breslow IS a stiff. To even entertain trading Duran means something is broken, IMO. These are individuals not an empty shell w/ accompanying stats
  15. I just like the dude. But I agree with you.
  16. You are overrating the importance of a back end starter and underrating the importance of an emotional leader/rally cryer They are riding high off not trading Duran, its exuberance right now. Its fun. Its personal. Its emotional. They are bought in. You lose all of that if you trade Duran.
  17. I hang up if I get offered any pitcher not named Skenes for Duran, and I wouldnt even say I love Duran. I just know how important he is to the team. Trading Duran, you lose the locker room. It would have been a punt.
  18. Plus you get a #3 starter at a rate that is affordable to us, but high for Pitt so maybe they would have not asked for too much and a good set-up man Now what I dont know - May makes peanuts, and were they actually NOT trying to replace the Devers $$. DId they only go after SP making 5m or less. I hope not, but you never know with these guys. Should this be the case, then ppl prob being a little hard on breslow. Im not a guy who happens to think all cheapness comes from Henry. I think Bloom and Breslow both have egos and may get in their own way at times. But if Bres was told not to bring on salary, that obviously restricts his options But the whole ' "were gonna buy and/or were gonna spend!!" and they are 0 for like the last 3 times theyve said that, which has me being like "this team talks to us like we're idiots" and is a big problem in recent history. Its all management speak. Ive quit jobs over that. Dont sit there and give me management speak, come straight or shut up.
  19. I wanted to deal with Pirates because they had Keller who is signed to three more years at an AAV of like 17m, which is high for them, so I thought they might get him (put their money where their mouth is to replace Devers $$, but funny how that didnt happen) and Bednar (having a great year, and signed to next but got shelled first outing for yankees so maybe im glad that didnt happen, i remember you saying you werent sold on bednar and I might have been too focused on a misleading RP ERA). But thats the deal i wanted because i didnt think it would cost duran, abreu, cedanne Right now, we dont have the best offensive options at 2b, dh, 1b .... so i wasnt trying to make another hole for a pitcher when we had bello and gio complimenting crochet.
  20. I had heard late in the day "still actively pursuing Ryan" and NESN trade deadline special was focused on him. Im theorizing, Im not trying to submit it as fact. Additional evidence is that we didnt get anybody else save for a late trade for a guy who the dodgers were actively trying to move
  21. Right, but you said needed 2 starters I would say needed 1 starter, could have used another. But I throw Tolle out there, personally. Or Sandlin. These dudes are 22, 24 and are doing fine in the minors. Plus, Im a believer that the more a batter faces a pitcher, the more that favors the batter. A new arm who bats havent seen can play up and if you give that edge to Sandlin or Tolle, I think they'll be fine at starter #5 But to you directly, my issue with you calling for 2 starters is knowing that you would rather trade Duran than from the farm, and its that which bugs me. I dont think this team rolls like this if you trade Duran. I think HE (not a like outfielder) is the reason the team is playing loose and confident. I think if you trade him, the team is let down. I think hes their emotional leader, their rally cryer, dare I say their "heart".
  22. I wasnt aware of these 5 man playoff rotations
  23. Yeah, I feel we should have pulled the trigger on someone between Ryan and May, and I would have PREFERRED it be a rental vs include Duran or Abreu But we're rolling so Im not as concerned about it as I was immediately after deadline. At risk of sounding repetitive, I think we hung around negotiating for Joe Ryan for too long, and by the time we came out of that, we had to act quick, so we overpaid for a guy the Dodgers promised to help find a new home cuz he got kicked out of their rotation
