  1. That's because analytics departments will deduce that batters should then drop the angle of their back shoulders 2 more percent to compensate. However, many batting coaches, upon being ordered to implement such adjustments, may misinterpret the way to measure such tweaks, and alter swings by as much as 20% instead of 2%. The result -- when contact is actually made -- will be a rash of pop-ups to the catcher. When called to the front office, one BP instructor will plead he's a ballplayer, not a math whiz. Another will admit he skipped geometry that day to go trout fishing. A third will confess he broke his plastic protractor in school trying to turn it into a helicopter on the point of his pencil... They'll all look at each other and nod.
  2. Maybe because the Sox' rotation right now consists of Crochet and Buehler rotating eyeballs at all the other starters.
  3. And in the end, the walks you take, aren't equal to the hits... you make.
  4. If his arm was fresh enough to use in Woo tonight, why couldn't the Sox summon him to Boston tonight? They only had zero relievers available going into the game...
  5. Simultaneously watching two ties and two relievers on two NESN channels... in Boston and Worcester. And Luis Guerrero has better stuff than Liam Hendriks.
  6. Stats shouldn't even include relievers in ERA. Often, earned runs charged to them are allowed to score by subsequent relievers. Of course, sometimes the next guy prevents those baserunners from crossing the plate -- that's the mark of a good reliever. At least the statisticians should include the following categories for bullpen men: Inherited Runners S&P and Bequeathed Runners S&P (Stranded/Plated). Some might say what about starters? I say if they can't finish 5 IP, they deserve whatever they get.
  7. Almost all rookies go through growing pains, pitchers' books on their weaknesses, and adjustments. If the Sox believe in Campbell's talents, they'll let him work through it -- like all teams do with young players in bridge years. And the sooner they allow Anthony and Mayer to do the same at the big league level, the sooner one or two or three of these guys can become part of the core of the next good Boston contender, whether that's next year or the year after or the one after that...
  8. Not in New England: 100% rain. May see sun this weekend... The much-maligned bullpen has saved the team the past two games, but now that they're taxed we'll have to expect some negative residuals. One of them may be Crochet straining something by insisting on finishing what he starts. Or Chapman will be wild, or there'll be an unhappy ending even next week. The Sox sure could use a good, long stint by another starter soon... or Criswell. Or an offensive barrage that includes more bats than the top of the order!
  9. Next to nothing? What if No Vaughn was next to a fire hydrant -- would he be tall enough then? Or how about a cactus (not a saguaro, but one of those little purple ones in a porcelain cup on the windowsill).
  10. I know you're convinced it was all about Yoshida, but unless you have evidence, I'm not. The front office may be looking for any way to get Anthony into the batting order without making a trade. Devers to 1B, Anthony to DH (then eventually some OF, and some other guys to DH) makes more sense. There has been absolutely zero hints that Masa and his bum shoulder will be ready for Boston soon. They won't even let him DH in the minors. Meanwhile, an update on prospects on MLB.com today says at this point, Anthony is just wasting his time in Triple A.
  11. You know it's a bad scene when Laz Diaz is the mediator, diffusing angst across the infield.
  12. The best defense for this roster of Red Sox is Crochet striking out the side. But how is fielding% affected by "Kingles"? (a Kingle is a swinging Strike 3 on a pitch so nasty it bounces beyond the reach of the catcher and all the way to backstop, allowing the batter to safely reach first base).
  13. Umpires are human, so they all miss a call sometimes. But the best ones -- when they realize it -- turn their backs and let a player blow off steam and even utter cuss words. I've also experienced umps quietly admit to a player or coach they blew a call, after the situation has calmed down. Guys like Estabrook with a quick fuse have ego issues, and are on power trips. Don't ever underestimate why people in charge chose professions that carry a ball-strike clicker (or gun or ICE vest). Finally, no viewer should ever consider that fake rectangle on their boob tube to delineate the strike zone -- since it's the exact same dimensions no matter how tall or short the batter, whether he's crouching in his stance or straight up in the box.
  14. Didn't have his lunch angle or his dinner angle: "Hey, baby -- buy you a cherry cola?"
  15. I recently looked it up. But the Giants were definitely interested in Tek as a managerial candidate two years ago.
  16. That's pretty good. Mays had to regularly face pitchers like Newcombe, Gibson and Jenkins, and try to drive hits between or over the likes of Aaron, Clemente and Robinson. Ruth didn't have to face Satchel Paige or pitch to Josh Gibson, or any of the other Negro League greats. I'd just change the Current Era to Check-the-Check Error.
  17. The guy with the long wingspan that helps him reach more grounders, pop-ups or wild throws than most definitely has pretty good range. But since the poster brought up the f-word, we might as well end it with a debate: who would record more outs in the ballpark -- Mr. Fantastic or the Flash? I'd pick pliable Reed Richards, because he can instantly stretch his glove hand to any spot on the diamond. The Flash may cover the same ground just by running, but we don't know if he even has soft hands... he's so fast, he may overrun plays because everything looks so blurry. That's it. Mr. Fantastic has the range to win Gold Gloves at every position in the same season.
  18. Maybe since Varitek has been loyal to org, reportedly turned down a recent offer to manage the Mariners, and someone upstairs might like to see how he comports himself at the helm. Fans would at least like to see Tek get mad at a call at the plate, and if the ump tries to eject his player, defend his guy by grabbing the catcher's mitt and stuffing it into Blue's facemask.
  19. Well, what if a guy doesn't move quickly laterally but is born with extra-long arms and can reach more grounders and liners from a standstill? We're talking knuckles scraping dirt when he's at ease, Simian in nature, with extensions easily over 100 centimeters -- or even 1 entire meter stick... how do you like those metrics? Huh?!?
  20. Know a song? "Everybody Wants to Rule 5 the World"
  21. Not bad, considering Ted was drilled by a pitch off the elbow in an exhibition game five days before the '46 Series. The swelling was so painful he couldn't even swing a bat until Game 1. Doctors didn't give cortisone shots for aches back then. The only shots available were supplied by Johnnie Walker.
  22. Interesting that Cora misses a game, and Vazquez gets appointed pinch-skipper -- not Varitek. Could be the big guy really doesn't want to be in charge of (or blamed for) a team that has still lost more than it's won. Would he be interested as the heir apparent? Does the front office even consider him managing material? Saturday is the one-third mark of the long season (and Memorial Day is a week early this year). It may still be May, but that's a large slice out of any pie.
  23. Relatively new big leaguers? Neither is a nibbler, both are confident in their stuff, and they're not afraid to go after batters. Dobbins leads all Sox starters in lowest BB9 at 1.4. Next is Buehler 2.4, and Fitts 2.6. The rest of the rotation: Giolito 2.7, Crochet 3.0, Newcomb 3.3, Houck 3.5, and Bello 5.5 (really?).
