    What's so controversial about green jerseys? The Sox already sell plenty of green caps. At least green shirts are better than yellow -- and some fans buy those, too.

    Seem to recall the best braintrust in Sox history had so much faith in their pitching depth at the end of 2011 that if they finished tied for a postseason berth -- and had to win a one-game playoff -- they were ready to acquire 100-year old starter Bruce Chen (staying fresh eating plantains and guavas). More 2025 optimism: if things ever get that bad from injury epidemics or suckitude, Breslow and Bailey will both suit back up to throw some innings -- this franchise is done with bargain bins, baby!

    It's always a time for optimism before the first pitch of the year, but why does anyone think Chapman will regain his status as closer for a contender -- four years after his last All-Star season? Since then, he's been at his best as a set-up man. Chapman looked great in Spring Training, but this will be his fifth team in the past four years. There's a reason none of the previous four made any attempt to bring him back. So here's my optimism for 2025: after the still-early months that have Red Sox fans riding a roller coaster (the kind that induces more than agita), the team will become a contender when the bullpen transitions to Justin Slaten as closer. Then Breslow will really go for it, by trading for another reliever who is actually good this year -- and not someone who used to be...

    New York never rebuilds, always goes for it, and their fans won't accept less. So the Yankees never lie to them.

    I don't trust any of them except Whitlock -- if only we could trust him to stay healthy. He's a key guy right now. I'd like to believe the star-studded rotation will go deeper into games to help preserve the pen, but knowing how careful Cora and Co. will be with the possibly fragile starters, that's unlikely. Boston's pitching looks improved, but it's hard to call it a strength with three starters are already on the IL, and a suspect bullpen. The offense is going need to outbash -- and make more contact -- than opponents.

    Jays could seize the day, Rays may have a say, don't say nay, the North American way. They've already changed the song: don we now our Jay apparel... ... but beware the City Connect GREEN Sox. Green: the color of four-leaf clovers, Christmas trees, and the anti-inflammatory food to eat every day for a long life (plus gators, crocs and the serpent in the Garden of Eden).

    Opposing teams will also have more of a fair chance in Yankee Stadium, now that those two thugs in RF are banned from mugging visiting players.

    If Bregman gets hurt, it opens the door for Mayer. It may already be the planned transition (especially if Bregman opts out), because Mayer won't be replacing Raffy, he'll be replacing AB. By the time Bregman gets back in the line-up, Story will probably be hurt. Either way, when Mayer comes up, he's here to stay... even if Campbell has to move to the outfield. Options are good.

    Didn't you hear Chaim at Winter Weekend, when the Red Sox "weren't ready to make that bet!" (not buyers, not sellers, not bettors, just worseness as usual). As for NY, NY, guaranteed some national writer will predict -- for the 25th consecutive time this century -- the pinstripes to win it all. Forget losing Soto, the Yankees can still do it because their rotation is missing Cole, Gil and Schmidt. At least New York fans will get to see ex-Yanks on the mound for their favorite rivals: Richard Fitts in Boston... and the Opening Day starter for the crosstown Mets, Clay Holmes (that must really suck).

    No one is too old if he's still healthy enough to be effective (like throwing 100 mph in the strike zone). The question is, who will be a bigger factor for his new team: Chapman or Scherzer? The answer will determine the fate of the AL East... (you heard it here worst)!

    To be honest, they were lying. Honestly, they lied. I'm not gonna lie, but they did. To tell you the truth, they can't.

    Have to give credit to management for going with Campbell and trying to finally stabilize what has been a problem area since Machado's dirty slide. The Sox could've easily gone with another platoon -- Hamilton's arguably been their best player this Spring -- and sent KC down for more control. Instead, they chose him from the Big Three to win Rookie of the Year and get the org another draft pick. I don't expect a great start for the club, though, until the rotation is fully healthy (if ever) and the bullpen sorts itself out. Gotta also be patient while Devers, Abreu and maybe even Story ease back into their grooves. Most posters watching the majority of these preseason games have to agree this team looks best when all of the Big Three are in the line-up. Mayer and Anthony should be called up as soon as the Sox secure that extra year of control... then let's see where we're at by Memorial Day.

    Anthony is ready now. Not saying he'd be an instant star, but with his patience at the plate -- exceptional for a young guy -- it's not outrageous to expect close to an .800 OPS. Even a .250 batting average with 15 HRs would help the parent club. He's also the exact player Miami would ask for in a trade for an ace. The suggested package probably wouldn't get it done until Perales shows he's recovered (and good again) from surgery.

    Can't we just pay Paxton for one more year to stay retired? But if he makes a comeback, promise not to trade him at the deadline if he's good, so he can opt out?

    I wasn't on board then... but was whooping so loud I woke the whole family, and the dogs barked for 10 minutes at a phantom burglar. The reason it was a great moment in Boston history is that Craig Kimbrel was about to blow the entire season for the best Red Sox team ever. We all know if that ball bounces to the fence for a walkoff, the Astros were winning the pennant the next day. When asked about that last at bat at his Red Sox intro this winter, Bregman said, "I thought we won the game..." The cheers heard all over New England and Red Sox Nation that night weren't congratulatory for the most difficult catch of all-time, but for real relief -- for saving our hearts and souls!

    I've liked him ever since, because he swung at the first pitch, and saved me from having a heart attack. Kimbrel had walked the bases loaded, and I couldn't take another full count.

    I definitely thought Benintendi was a solid leftfielder the last time the Red Sox won a title. So did the professionals who evaluate big league defense, and nominate top candidates at each position on ballots for Gold Glove Awards (which included all three members of the Boston starting outfield in '18). MLB managers and coaches thought Beni was pretty solid in 2021 when they actually awarded him a GG.     This will be the fifth year that Mayer has been a professional baseball player. He looks like he can handle all facets of the game. And we should be glad he looks ready right now, because -- as much as fans, media, and especially the club don't want to admit -- Trevor Story doesn't. We all want a healthy Story to solidify the defense, help balance the offense, and lead the Sox back to contention. But come on -- those who have watched a lot of Grapefruit games know what we're seeing. The Red Sox are finally calling it a bad back; at least, that's the reason Story didn't go to Mexico... and presumably the reason he's made some glaring throwing errors this Spring. Stay tuned. We should be ok...

    Merloni said last night that Mayer will be the first call-up for any infielder injured on the big club. They all have weaknesses or holes in their swings that could use some improvement -- and that includes Story, Casas and Devers. But the way Mayer carries himself on and off the field like a big leaguer right now makes it unlikely that an inevitable batting slump (part of the game for most pros) will crush his future. Or ours.

    Most aspects of AAA are below MLB standards: ballparks, travel, accommodations, meals, umpiring? and especially pitching (getting strikes to swing at). Mayer's AAA stats might not signal whether or not, or when, he's ready for promotion. This is where we have to trust the front office... ... like when they promoted Roman Anthony to High A when most of his stats weren't too good. Or the Spring Training that Kristian Campbell started oh-fer at the plate and awkward at 2B, but made enough progress at both to make the majors (plus, he already had one trait they really liked: RHH).

    Maddie, thanks for writing the most important baseball article of this season, and future ones, and for calling out Manfred for being the kind of coward that enables such racist agenda from a white supremacist house. Sorry if anyone still thinks politics are off limits in venues like baseball, but it is impossible when haters temporarily in charge of a nation entirely created by and composed of immigrants try to erase memories in U.S. history of a truly great hero like Jackie Robinson.
