A Realistic View of the 2025 Red Sox: Part II
5GoldGlovesOF,75 replied to moonslav59's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
For the Red Sox fans I know, Roman Anthony isn't regarded as a Lynn/Rice clone who will be promoted and instantly carry Boston to the playoffs and beyond. Not this year. The main reason fans want guys like Anthony, Mayer and Campbell in Boston is new faces with new possibilities. These are players who've succeeded at lower levels and fans want to see what they can do in The Show. We all know what the Sox' big league rosters have produced for the past 3 1/3 seasons: suckitude. We're tired and ready for change. And the best part of the promise of youth is that even if The Big Three falter this year, there will still be hope they can become part of the core of future Red Sox contenders. The only hope we have for a guy like Romy (appreciated as a utility man) is that he doesn't have to start at 1B and bat clean-up. The hope for Giolito is that he doesn't have to start on the mound... -
No fan who watches these Red Sox games could give a crap that Boston is third in the AL in total runs scored, and per game, and second in team OPS. The offense has been inadequate all year making contact when it counts, and can't even move a baserunner -- and that's why the Sox have the most one-run losses. It's not bad luck, and it's not due to change unless one of two things happen... 1. the coaches hold crash clinics to change everyone's two-strike approach: choke up, get closer to the plate, shorten swings, and put it play; or 2. get new players, who already do that. Otherwise, continuing to watch these zombies eat their own limbs is the definition of insanity.

A Realistic View of the 2025 Red Sox: Part II
5GoldGlovesOF,75 replied to moonslav59's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Don't be hard on yourself for wanting them to improve. But you knew like the rest of us over the winter they still didn't have enough rotation or bullpen depth. Relying on retreads for comebacks like Giolito, Hendriks and this year's Paxton -- Sandoval -- was never a good plan. The Sox needed to at least acquire another legitimate starter (most likely by the obvious trade that's still inevitable -- for Duran or Abreu) and another reliever in his prime... but the latter would've cost more money, and Brez already enough shiny new names to sell tickets. The biggest shock was Houck going from All-Star to bat-finder. The biggest loss was Crawford -- who many here wanted to send to the pen, but who had a better first half last year than any current Sox starter except Crochet. -
I agree with this post. Some fans think batting orders are overemphasized, but when discussing a losing team that leads the majors in LEFT ON BASE and ONE-RUN LOSSES, how can adjusting the order to optimize production not matter?

The Astros' players who directly benefitted in '17 -- and got amnesty -- probably weren't offended when AJ Hinch and Cora took the fall for implementing a system developed by the Houston analytics department before AC was even hired there. But what does line up with Franklin Morales is a 2013 Red Sox world championship. Rumor has it that even those players and coaches also tried to decode secret signs flashed by opposing catchers, pitchers, infielders and managers, as well as base coaches to batters and baserunners. Anyone offended by that should find another sport to watch, because it's been part of baseball since the beginning of time.

Ya, the manager must have cheated to win it all in 2018. Mookie was just a mirage that year. In his career, Betts won the MVP once -- in '18 -- so clearly this is evidence. Mookie only finished 2nd in '16 in Boston, and '20 and '24 in LA. He was in the top 8 three other times, and received MVP votes or made the All-Star teams in all 10 of his full seasons. Betts' bWAR as a Red Sox was 42.5 in 6 years, but only 30 as a Dodger in 5 1/3 years so far. Obviously, he's slipping.

Cora is too short for all the wild throws Sox infielders make. But he went to a decent basketball college, so he may have good ups.

An alien from another planet lands in Boston. This visitor comes from a world totally alien to ours, except for one thing: they know baseball. In his research, the spaceman learns that the Red Sox lost their #3 and #4 batters to injury. And they keep losing. Luckily, they have the NUMBER ONE HITTING PROSPECT IN THE SPORT at the next highest level, waiting for a call-up. "What's the hold-up?" asks the visitor. He's told that the front office can't find a spot for Roman Anthony on the big league team... "That does not compute." Who would he possibly replace? "How about anyone? They suck!"
-
I often wonder how many more runs the Red Sox would have scored this year with a runner on third and less than two outs, when batters struck out, instead of just hitting a medium-speed grounder to the right side. I often wonder, because they often whiff entirely at merely touching the bat to the pitch.
-
It is mind-boggling sometimes when fans blame the manager for not making the roster he's given by the front office perform better. Why can't he just order players to make better contact, throw more strikes, catch more outs, and never get erased on the bases?

A thread about pitcher W-L records

Bell is convinced Lawson was planted in Boston's batting cages by Ramiro Mendoza to sabotage the team that had several Yankee fans I know very nervous over the winter. -

According to bb-ref, Schiraldi blew a save and lost Game Six of the '86 Series. Stanley, who allowed Calvin's inherited runners to score, obviously also blew a save. But what if Schiraldi-- while watching Steamer wild-pitch home the tying run -- was offered a ticket for Game Seven at half price by a disgusted Red Sox fan in the front row (who had enough and was leaving early)? If distracted Cal said, "No, thanks," and then bought a ticket for his shrink for Gm 7 at face value, didn't he blow the savings he could've had in the 12th? -
Not disputing the data, but specific batters have to be considered. My example was a guy who regularly tries to hit to the opposite field, and usually succeeds (even if it's not always a "hit"). Letting him swing probably gives as much a chance to move the runner, and definitely better odds to plate the runner. The reason Cora and some other managers don't bunt -- according to announcers, especially ex-players -- is because modern MLB batters can't bunt, since they don't even practice it anymore.

Anybody can second guess. I prefer to first guess -- at the time a move is being made. At a travel ball game over the weekend, in a scoreless contest with runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs, the manager had his #3 batter bunt them over. As soon as I saw the kid square around I said, "No." Not just because the guy has a good bat, but because he hits to the opposite field with authority. I'd rather not give up the out but let him hit to the right side; maybe he gets a hit and drives in a run or at least hits a grounder or fly ball that can move the lead runner to 3rd with one out. Btw: he hit a sacrifice bunt and the run eventually scored... but I'd still rather let that particular batter swing away -- though not if he was a dead pull hitter (which happened later, same situation, when the leadoff man drilled a one-hopper right at the third baseman for an easy double play).

Doesn't matter; Campbell is the guy the Red Sox are hoping turns it around and wins Rookie of the Year. Under the rules, that will reward the team with a draft pick, and most importantly, it can't reward Campbell with an extra year of service time because he's already locked up with an extension. This may be why you won't see Campbell get sent back to Worcester to work on his hitting... at least, he'll never be replaced by Roman Anthony, specifically -- in case the latter is actually too good. If Boston can just limit Anthony to fewer than 130 at bats or fewer than 45 days on the active MLB roster, he'll retain his rookie status for 2026... by then the Sox will have secured that all-important extra year of control, and they'll be happy if Roman wins Rookie of the Year in '26 and nets them a bonus draft pick.

It doesn't matter which team eventually trades for Duran (or Abreu) -- but Breslow better be getting some pitching in return. If someone values Duran enough to legitimately jolt them into the playoffs, they''ll be willing to sacrifice a legitimate arm. It happens frequently, and even recently, with pitchers like Joe Ryan and Cole Ragans. That's if a deal is made this month. Brez would rather wait until the deadline at the end of July because: 1. maybe, just maybe, the Sox will start winning one-run games and get back in the wild card race... ... and if so, most importantly: 2. he can hold off promoting Anthony another month, in case Roman really is a star, so he'll be less likely to win Rookie of the Year, which rewards the player a full year of service time -- BECAUSE NOW IS CLEARLY LESS IMPORTANT TO THE FRONT OFFICE THAN SEVEN YEARS FROM NOW. -

One aspect that requires no statistical data, because anyone watching can confirm with their own eyeballs: Blown Game. -

The most common advice big league players, coaches and managers tell a rookie when he's first called up is, "Be yourself." Sometimes that only works for so long, but those who make constant adjustments stick around. We don't remember those that can't. If you're Frank Tanana and arm issues suddenly prevent your fastball from striking out batters like Nolan Ryan, you can't be yourself anymore. So be Bill Lee. If you're slumping Rich Gedman and a coach changes your stance, you still can't be George Brett. So be a coach yourself. -

Doesn't Dylan Cease have to be part of this trade? He'll be a free agent at the end of the season, and probably moved by the end of July anyway. Not having a great year so far, but led his league in games started four of the past five years. The Red Sox MASH unit rotation could certainly use a guy like that...
