    If a budget-conscious CBO is considering giving Nimmo $100+M for 5 years, isn't Benintendi a much better value? Beni -- not Nimmo -- was an All-Star and Gold Glover the past two seasons. Andrew is also two years younger...

    I should have said since they both left New York... Gray has pitched in 92 games. Paxton has pitched in one. But I won't argue health. It's probably the story with every pitching staff since the beginning of time... yet it somehow with Bloom rotations it seems like an even bigger factor than talent and potential. Hell, when I was healthy, even I was much better (at a few things, anyway).

    Paxton never seemed better than "medium upside, high no-side" (or "hide and go seek)." He's not even Sonny Gray... or Sonny and share. Definitely not Santino, who at least made it to the tollbooths on the causeway.

    Ya, this winter may be more important than ever for Bloom that any pitchers he acquires, actually, you know... pitch. 2022 pitchers starting a minimum of 25 games -- Houston: 5, Boston: 2 (Pivetta and Hill). Past Red Sox rotations -- 2021: 3, 2018: 3, 2013: 4, 2007: 3, 2004: 5, 1986: 4, 1975: 3, 1967: 1 (Jim Lonborg, who started 39).

    If fangraphs numbers materialize, would Red Sox fans rather have deGrom at 3 for $141M or Rodon at 5 for $120M? Each have injured histories and could become Sale contracts at any second. If I had to choose, I'd take Rodon because of the AAV -- $24M is basically half of $47M for deGrom -- which would be a lot better for a rebuilding team's budget. Also in 2023, Rodon will be 30. deGrom will be 35 -- or two years older than Nathan Eovaldi.

    ... which led to what is now infamously known on talksox as Huffy's Cliff. (not to be confused with Duffy's Cliff, which gave Fenway fans a literal standing room view -- on the field -- in front of the Monster for the first 20 years or so of the park). The first-half of the latter featured the legendary outfield of Duffy Lewis-Tris Speaker-Harry Hooper, which was intact from 1910-15. Hooper, of course, is the greatest Red Sox winner in history with four World Series rings ('12, 15, 16, 18) and the all-time leader in outfield assists for a rightfielder with 333, 78 more than runner-up Roberto Clemente. Gotta wonder how many of those Hoop assists were force-outs at first base on would-be singles in the shallow deadball days...

    Not bad: a little more than Bloom signed Diekman for... or around what he couldn't stomach to pay Benintendi that brought us the Franchy Error.

    I like the effort, but I gotta have a slightly better return for both my #2 and #3 pitching prospects... at least, for the reason that some evaluators are saying this is the best crop of arms at the top of the Sox system in quite sometime. Are Walter and Murphy at least better prospects than Winckowski and Seabold?

    The point for Red Sox fans -- especially this winter -- is that we shouldn't have to hope the guy in charge of assembling the roster in Boston has to find a steal or get lucky when recruiting ballplayers.

    Without listing every salary of the 40-man, who besides Sale is due a ton of money on the '23 Red Sox? Is there any dead money still on the books (Price, Pedroia, Manny, Bobby Bonilla etc)?

    I have little hope he'll swing all the necessary moves in the next few months to make that much of a difference for the 2023 team... ... but that doesn't mean we don't have a lot of work to do: posting unreasonable trade proposals and suggesting expenditures that only big market franchises can afford. The real frustration with the Bloom Era includes all those posts within reason that responsible typists have been submitting since the Fall of 2019. Like, how many teams do guys like Brad Hand and David Robertson have to pitch for while the Red Sox keep choosing the Robles, Diekmans and Familias of the bullpen gutters? The answer is 9 or 10 so far (if you count the Olympics) combined for Hand and Robertson -- who were good enough to pitch in this year's World Series.

    Baker Street -- now that's a good one to have stuck in my head. Just last month my son and I heard it on Sirius 26 while driving to baseball practice. I admit, I turned up the V with each sax riff... underrated guitar solo at the end, too.

    Give Bloom credit; he just saved Boston another approximate $120M by not overpaying to recruit Diaz and his trumpeeter...

    The more I mull -- if the Sox were a true contender, then acquiring a true closer would be a priority. Building from the back forward isn't reverse engineering in modern hardball, as evidenced by the bullpens that won rings in Houston and Atlanta the past two years. But in Kike Hernandez' world, being way better next season doesn't necessarily mean Boston has to find a specific reliever who can retire Yordan Alvarez in November. The Sox have a few candidates coming off surgeries who might close. Meanwhile, one way back to respectability isn't to blow big bucks on a single guy like Diaz, but to spread investments into stockpiling good arms for legitimate depth. Let's start with Montero and Eflin from the World Series teams...

    I have hope for Valdez just because he's from the Houston system. Have announcers mentioned the Astros are also doing just fine without Brantley, their best hitter the past three years? Or that not only have they been ok in centerfield since Springer left, but that a guy like McCormick allowed them to trade Straw and Siri (a guy who'd look like a star in Boston or NY)...

    A lot of posters here would agree a deep farm yields both core players and prospect capital to trade for MLB areas of need; which, for the Red Sox rings, was usually pitching. But free agents have a long history of putting teams over the top, whether you call them key or prime, or just Howie Kendrick, the 2019 World Series MVP. Pre-free agency trivia (from an old Baseball Digest, circa 1968): the '67 Impossible Dream Red Sox won the AL pennant with 17 homegrown players on their 25-man roster. They actually did add a free agent that season -- Ken Harrelson -- signed after being released by the A's for bad-mouthing owner Charlie Finely. The Hawk was recruited down the stretch to replace injured slugger Tony Conigliaro, beaned out of the season in mid-August. Unfortunately, Harrelson didn't approximate Tony C's All-Star bat in '67. But the Hawk led the bigs in RBI in '68 and finished third in AL MVP voting.

    Both Bloom and Scott Boras, Bogey's agent, like to wait until the last possible minute before making deals -- mulling every last offer and/or squeezing every last penny. But Chaim Bloom simply cannot wait until just before Spring Training to make serious moves and invest serious resources. Not this winter. The Xander situation must be resolved, one way or the other, ASAP. Correa is another Boras' client, but we already know he's leaving $35M AAV (for each of two more years) in Minnesota. Does anyone really think he and his agent aren't confident he'll get the same rate at more years somewhere else? What makes more sense for Boston: keeping X and Devers for close to $400 million... or paying Correa 6 for $210 and swapping Raffy for a good young pitcher?
