  1. But this isn't a big picture window with summer screens opening across a tableau of suburbia. It's just an attic window with metal slots barely big enough for wasps to nest in. The Red Sox have an ace pitcher and closer, and young outfielders with all-around talent. But they still need a starting first baseman, a starting second baseman, a starting third baseman, a clean-up batter who can hit homers and a #2 pitcher who can start in the postseason...
  2. Great list to evaluate. Based on groundball rates (and presumed swing-and-miss stuff) -- for a team with a crappy infield defense- -- here are the best and worst fits in order... Best fits: Abbott, Greene, Gore, Ryan, Cease, Peralta. Worst fits: Framber, Bassitt, Alcantara, Suarez, Keller, Kelly.
  3. What's silly to me is for a batter to call the pitch a ball before the ump does. If Casas does have a better eye for whether a pitch zipping past him is out of the zone, he should keep it to himself -- rather than showing up an older guy standing behind him. Most hitters realize umpires are human beings full of flaws -- and that pointing those out can ultimately backfire in future at bats. But a little praise for the same Blue on good calls can also ingratiate a batter with a human who may be susceptible to holding grudges...
  4. The cash was even counterfeit -- Monopoly money or moldy slips from Geraldo Capone's safe.
  5. Worst trade for a starting pitcher was Andrew Cashner in 2019. Dombro thought he was beefing up the rotation, grabbing a guy who was 9-3 with a 3.83 ERA and 2.5 WAR in the first half. But Cashner was so bad they only let him make 6 starts before banishing him to the bullpen. His Boston stint: 2-5, 6.20 ERA, -0.3 WAR. The two pitching prospects the Sox dealt never made it, but Cashner never pitched in the bigs again, either. Blaaaaahhhh....
  6. Softball fields 10 with a 4-man outfield. Long time ago anyway... nowadays, kings come in 4-packs -- mainly because beer is so expensive. I don't frequent bars anymore, but I'm told it's all old guys, since young people can't afford $10-dollar drafts (ah, the old days when we used to pound pitchers at the plate and then at the bar...).
  7. Leftfielder on our softball team pulled a hammy sliding a case of Bud cans out of the trunk of his car.
  8. Points taken. But can you also appreciate the need for a balance of young and untested talent with veteran regulars hungry for rings while they can still contribute? The Red Sox need a solid second baseman and a good righthanded bat. The industry word is that Marte needs a change of scenery. Boston sounds like the perfect fit...
  9. A Silver Slugger NL second baseman the last two years with a positive dWAR is about as good as it gets for a team without a decent regular at 2B since Pedroia. Seriously, the best second baseman in Boston since Machado ulfed Dustin was probably Story in his first year here. But he's busy elsewhere these days!
  10. Yamamoto's was. Wonder how many rival owners and their GMs viewed that contract after the World Series...
  11. Ya, I automatically assumed an "upgrade" meant a different leadoff man. Nowadays, that doesn't have to be a speed demon, but just someone with a high On Base %. Of course, it 's great to have a 50-home run hitter like Ohtani or Schwarber there to give you an instant lead (which can negate a high K-rate; Duran doesn't go yard enough for his...). Anthony is constantly on base, but is a better fit batting second or third so he can drive in someone in front of him with a high OBP. Looking at the 2025 stats, Ketel Marte was 5th in the NL in OBP, had a low K-rate and socked more homers than anyone in Boston. Just saying...
  12. Alex is just confused like the rest of us. Until last season, AC thought the title was The Nevermending Story. Now, when he's about to change it to Leftside Story, someone notes that the Sharks and the Jets are just amateur nines with maybe a few college prospects... definitely not NHL vs. NFL teams (that does not compute).
  13. Definitely wear a helmet near any steel parasail
  14. Already paying a lefty contact hitter with little power who has no real position... bad enough to have one guy who's a poor fit, but don't get stuck up Poor Fits Creek with just a tennis racket. Just pay Pete Alonshmoe.
  15. Cora's favorite movie is The Sandlot where legends never die. And his favorite food is honey because it never spoils. But he's not in love with Supreme Court jesters, who all have seats for life.
  16. Didn't Gio turn down a $19 mil option? If the Qualifying Offer is about $22 mil, that's not much more and doesn't make sense for him to accept, since he's most likely looking for at least two or three times that in a multi-year deal.
  17. Because most of the shmoes are only Assistant Vice President Shmoes? ... although if there were two shomes present, it would be more fun: So we prefer a righty -- shmoe what I told ya shmoe. How do you shmoe?
  18. Yes to a trade of a good position player for a good position player. Absolute no to Abreu plus any MLB-ready starting pitcher, especially Early. That kind of deal reminds me of when the Mets were coming off a World Series win and acquired a 23-year old starter from the Royals for basically a back-up catcher named Ed Hearn -- who wound up playing 13 total games in KC and was out of baseball by age 27. Meanwhile, the Mets players couldn't believe they got David Cone, who by the time he was 25 went 20-3, was an NL All-Star and finished 3rd in Cy Young voting.
  19. What about when Elvis was 24 and stopped playing the field for a 14-year old named Priscilla.
  20. What we really need is for Brez to ignite some action this offseason, filling out his starting nine so we can all forget about the last spots on 26, and the 40.
  21. Yep. That's why they're more likely to trade for more pop. And that focus on improved defense may just be to get another power pitcher who whiffs a lot of batters and keeps the ball away from mediocre defenders (except for throwing it around the horn after Ks).
  22. Not if you can't hit home runs. Because that's the main way successful teams win close pitchers' duels in the postseason. We know the Red Sox can't play small ball, because they don't even have enough contact bats that can put the ball in play and hit behind baserunners. And we know they can't bunt, either. If they're just going to keep swinging for the fences, then we need a few more guys that can reach them...
  23. Based on personal observations. Like most of us, I've watched Hamilton's shaky defense for two years in Boston. Like only a few of us, though, I've seen Sogard in person in Worcester play solid D at second base, shortstop and third base. Sogard's a good baseball player -- and the org obviously agrees, since he started in two of this year's playoff games. Hamilton didn't even pinch-run in the postseason. Was he injured?
  24. Good example, but I'm not so sure on the totals. I've seen Sogard lay out to stop shots in both the shortstop hole and second base hole, and up the middle into centerfield. Hamilton's quicker, but Sogard may have better baseball instincts and get a better read on contact or swing direction or pitch shape (like Ripken did). I'd edit it to Sogard gets to 90. Then you have Sogard as a switch hitter vs. Hammy's occasional pop but lower OPS. Though we know they'll keep Davey for pinch-running...
  25. It's bad enough to have 6-year 162-game averages of 7.2 WAR, 122 runs scored, 33 HRs, 97 RBI, .867 OPS, and win four Silver Sluggers, two OF Gold Gloves (plus a nomination for another at SS) and have three TOP 5 finishes for NL MVP... ... but then to get honored with the 2025 Roberto Clemente Award for being the guy who "best represents the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field." LA must want a refund.
