  1. Another way to shore up the D: Breslow and Bailey are collecting tall pitchers with big arm extensions for pitch-to-NO-contact.
  2. Hard to dispute any of Max's points. The big mistake won't be losing Bregman, but if Breslow feels he now has to fill the void by trading a top pitching prospect. Boston is not paying Bichette, who isn't even a good fielder, or burning the farm on Marte. The best available options are good second basemen like Donovan or Horner. But without a doubt, the Cards and Cubs will want MLB-ready pitching in return. No, thanks. Let's see what Early, Tolle and eventually Witherspoon can do. Live-and-let-die with Romy, Hammy and Sogard-Sogahd-Sogaahd.
  3. Teams based around pitching better have tight defense, especially in the infield. The Red Sox just lost their best infielder. Maybe Mayer can play an entire season for the first time in his career. Contreras is supposed to be ok at 1B, though last year he had a negative dWAR for the first time -- even after leading the NL in errors at catcher in four different seasons.
  4. Bichette and an expensive longterm contract are not even a blip on the Red Sox' NADIR.
  5. "How do we align our public comments to align with what our president spews a'lyin to the Nation about how we just missed alining our roster with another player who didn't align with our malign alignments?"
  6. Look -- I'm ok with adding a trusty glove anywhere on this sieve of a defense. But I can't won't don't want anyone else swinging a bat nicknamed K-Brain.
  7. ARod was a top shortstop and decent but not better at 3B. Pokey Reese could shine with the leather at any position. Hanley Ramirez could hurt himself and teammates at any position. Robin Yount and Ernie Banks, Gold Glove shortstops, were both basically negative dWAR in the second half of Hall of Fame careers at CF and 1B. (I won't even mention the ex-Red Sox superstar traded in his prime who will wear an LA cap on his bronze plaque that moved to shortstop in his 30s and kept winning World Series rings)
  8. It's the nail polish. Black is at a premium more than ever in these dark times. A lot of young people turning 18 are just registering as goth.
  9. Hard for anyone now to say landing Bregman in the middle of last February was worthy of lighting a cigar (though Henry was maybe celebrating the beginning of the end of having to pay Devers' $300 million). What's bothersome is the very concept of the opt-out. Sure, it's an incentive to get a guy to sign... but it always seems like a way to convince someone to play in a place he's not sure he really wants to be. The Red Sox love to give opt outs -- which are perfect for a franchise that doesn't want to pay market prices. if the player does well, it helps the Sox in the standings, and then the guy can leave as soon as he gets really expensive. If a player opts in, it probably means he doesn't think he can get more money somewhere else. But Boston can always live with a mainstay who can fill a jersey and some seats with fans thirsty to identify with a returning core guy. We often want a player to opt out: Price (who loathed the Boston media), JD (so we could keep Schwarber), Giolito (paid for rehabbing an entire season). Kudos to Story, for staying put after his first healthy year.
  10. It wasn't my post. I wrote the Sox may not sign top talent for "another" year in the next free agent winter. I didn't ignore last winter, nor should any of us forget all the other bargain bin winters from this decade before then. But this offseason was the one where we all -- you and I and Craig Breslow included -- saw as a window to keep upgrading a club that looked like it was finally once again on the verge of contention. Ya, someone can say it's still early -- but 29 other teams that already signed guys they wanted can laugh at that notion.
  11. The Cubs gave a no-trade clause. The Red Sox wouldn't, because that doesn't jibe with their business plan of signing star players, and then dumping those market salaries once they've raised ticket prices and sold enough seats.
  12. Ai contradicts itself. I did a search for the definition of "irrupt" and it gave this example: "the crowd irrupted in cheers." That's not how I've ever spelled the verb, so I asked "irrupted in cheers or erupted in cheers" -- the reply: "the crowd erupted is the correct phrase" ... curiously, I went to re-type my search and here's what showed up: "the crowd erupted or the crowd erupted" It was as if Ai was trying to erase what my own eyes actually witnessed... like videos or names on maps or on the face of buildings!
  13. E. Suarez is not Plan B. He's Plan E and Plan K. If extended for like three years, together they spell EEEKKK. Just trade Duran for Paredes and let's go. That way the never-in-the-Red Sox can save all the money from not having to pay Devers and Schwarber and Alonso and Bregman for another winter of not signing any top talent in the next free agent class.
  14. Breslow is already singing if you can't be with the bat you love, then love your arms and D. If you're down and confused, and you can't remember who you're talking to; Concentration slips away, because your Breggie is so far away ... better load up on power arms, since the Sox will need to win lots of 1-0 games.
  15. Paredes' Pull Power a Phenway Phit? I. Paredes is an intriguing option. Selected as an All-Star the past two years for his bat, but only hit a career-high .254 last season. Also slugged 31 HRs three years ago -- when he played half his games in Crapitona Field in Florida. 162-game averages since 2023: Paredes 29 HR, 94 RBI, .793 OPS. K-rate 17.3%. Bichette 19 HR, 90 RBI, .778 OPS, K-rate 17.3%. ... dang yo -- Isaac might only cost a young arm, and definitely not 300 million clams... (he's also a negative dWAR third baseman, so there may be something too Raffy about then signing Ranger Suarez, a ground ball pitcher)
  16. My whole post refers to this year compared to last year. Some may feel Romy or Mayer or Ceddanne can play infield good enough, but no one can dispute that there is a big hole in the batting order right now. The Red Sox offseason doesn't deserve an F, because Breslow replaced Devers, Giolito and Buehler. But did he really upgrade? Even if... right now they get an I for Incomplete because their only All-Star positional player just left.
  17. I once tied an all-time record in baseball history for making three put-outs in one inning at first base.
  18. Meanwhile, for all we know, Brez may be doing exactly what Henry wanted, and the owner may be so overjoyed he hasn't signed one single free agent that he'll give Craig an extension.
  19. Some here and in the media say the Red Sox have made improvements. I see these swap-outs : Contreras for Devers, Gray for Giolito, Oviedo for Buehler, Nobody for Bregman... or even Refsnyder. Yes, WiLL will play 1B where Raffy refused, but his real position is batting clean-up. We'd all be happy if Gray could duplicate Gio's '25, and Oviedo better be better than Buehler. But even if Crochet and Chapman don't regress too much and are still All-Stars, a lot seems to depend on the progress of four unproven youngsters: Anthony, Mayer, Early, Tolle. Making postseason predictions on potential is folly. The only guarantees are Rafaela will dive, and Duran will sprint -- if they're both back in Boston.
  20. The Big Three's 2025 K-rate: Campbell 27.4%, Anthony 27.7%, Mayer 30.1%. Those were the three worst strikeout men on the team. We can only hope our young learners will improve. On the free agent market, Bregman and his 14.1% K-rate are gone. Bichette fanned 14.5% last year. Geno Suarez, whiffed 29.8% last year, and in 12 MLB seasons has Ked 27.4% overall... in 6,627 Plate Appearances. For baseball CBOs and GMs, you get what you pay for... but maybe not so much for Red Sox fans buying tickets to Fenway Park and subscriptions to NESN.
  21. I was once in the business, so know most headlines are written by editors and not the articles' reporters. So we can take it two ways: does "Bregman's Betrayal" refer to a dastardly deed done by Alex or by Craig? Can we at least agree that the only ones really betrayed are Red Sox fans? Once again. At least the front office is happy they don't have to pay Bregman or Devers any more...
  22. Sure you do: Silver and Gold. Slugger and Glove. Bregman was both, but hobbled in the second half. A diamond dog like him is a good bet to get healthy and contribute on both sides of the ball for more good years. That's a rare combo, silver and gold. But we let him go. Suarez is a career negative dWAR who's never led the league in homers but has led in Ks three times. The Red Sox don't need more swing and miss, but I've said all winter I'll take 25-HR contact guys like Bichette and Yandy Diaz any day.
  23. Green on Friday nights, yellow on Saturdays, white on Sundays?
  24. The Cubs may regret the Bregman deal but their fans won't. Chicago's front office knew that once Bregman signed with someone, that Bichette's pricetag would then be even higher.
  25. I know you're more about quality than quantity, so it's not just the total plate appearances. You were also in the camp with most of us at the beginning of the offseason that this team is going backwards if it doesn't replace Bregman and Devers with two quality bats. We have one: WiLLy C. Unsigned quality free agent bats that don't strikeout 200 times a year include two lefty outfielders -- of which we have plenty -- and Bo Bichette, who wants $300 million. Now what?
