    The semantics of the word "core" seem to bother you. My mistake. Jacksonian listed the top four Yanks; I countered with the Sox' top four so far this year. To some, Duran was a hard guy to root for when he was going badly last season, mainly because of a questionable attitude on a few issues. The perception is that he's more a team guy now, but the reality is fans will probably cheer him as long as he's doing well. Once on a nationally-televised Yanks-Red Sox brawl, cameras caught Mickey Rivers as a blatant cheap-shot artist. Yankee fans still loved him as long as he wore pinstripes.

    Franchy never had a Franchy start. Good ole Yankee fans think Sox fans should still hate Duran because he didn't used to be good. Nobody's anointing Duran a star, but his current WAR is indisputable data that he's playing like a big leaguer... and helping his club win the same amount of games as the annual World Series favorite.

    But... the Yanks are World Series favorites! The .500 Red Sox may not be loaded, but right now their core four of Devers, Verdugo, Yoshida and Duran is at 2.8 WAR... vs. 2.6 WAR for the quartet you listed: Judge-Rizzo-Torres-DJ. Maybe some of those hot starts will level off -- for both clubs...

    How's this: my son went a Sox game in Pittsburgh, and got there early to watch BP. He said McGuire put on a longball show, blasting them into the river, and only Devers hit more out.

    Duran is third in WAR for active Red Sox position players (behind Dugie and Devers). He also has a positive dWAR for the first time in his big league career. Boston chose Duran in the 2018 draft with its 7th pick, 220th overall... after 1. Casas, 2. Decker, 3. Feltman, 4. Cottam, 5. Ward, 6. Granberg. He turns 27 in September, so it's either still late... or right on prime.

    Thanks for the lists. Which players -- if any -- have been recruited to be part of the core of the next sustained contenders? Yoshida, unproven in the majors, and Story, damaged goods? I realize some pre-arbs may be also be core down the road -- like maybe Verdugo or Dombrowski draft picks Casas and Duran -- but what key guys were acquired and signed... Whitlock? Seriously, all that spending shows that this front office isn't cheap... but are they committed? Are they really investing in the future? Or just trying to field a team? Hopefully, they think it's both, and aren't inept...

    I'm glad you'll own your bads -- like putting quotes around something you're replying to that I didn't post. But kudos to you for your prediction that out of the entire 25-man roster that won the most games in Red Sox history, the one player that the new CBO would re-sign would be Devers. I'll never deny I'm a cynic about a lot of things, but history has shown what has become of the Red Sox so far under Chaim Bloom. I'm glad the Sox locked up Raffy, and now I await all the talent Bloom promised to surround him with.

    That's bull -- most of us who didn't think Bloom would sign Devers weren't cynics. All you had to do was just look at his record of dealing with all the players from the roster that won the World Series the year before he took over. He was stuck with Sale, but before Raffy, all the rest were either traded or not resigned (except Braiser for some reason). That's not cynicism, just history.

    They're exactly a .500 team because of their rotation: good game, bad game, win, loss, even-steven, steady-eddie, one step forward, two steps back, feeling better, need to be better -- there's no reason to expect anything else... but fans can hope: "If only Sale and Kluber were as good as they were, and Whitlock and Houck were as good as they'll be, and someone would just keep Bello in the bigs, and Paxton actually pitched in a Red Sox major league game..." Sing it, Carly: These are Pivetta days!

    Boston could afford to acquire two top starters for less than what it will cost for one Ohtani. The Red Sox could avoid next winter's New York and California bidding war for Ohtani, and sign Julio Urias for a fraction of the cost. And then go after another available top starter via trade, like Corbin Burnes. Sox fans forget how much difference it makes having not one but two good, dependable, healthy starting pitchers leading the rotation all season.

    Not now, but in his only year as a Red Sox in 2022: 11 wins, 2 losses.

    But... the answer to which question? Who is going to be cheaper than the multi-year costs of proven Boston winners Eovaldi and Wacha? Who is going to provide upside? Who is going to appease the fanbase, by hitting them upside the head? Who is going to take the heat off Sale, and make him look better by comparison? Who is going to put the heat on Cora, and make it easier to fire him? Who can't even throw hard enough anymore to hurt Nunez, if he swings from the heels?

    Great post. Neither the apologists nor the not-sorryists can post facts to refute your opinions. Marcelo Mayer will be here sooner than anyone expects. Maybe the Red Sox will then choose to "surround him with talent" -- like Bloom promised when they signed Devers -- and invest in legitimate starting pitchers. Meanwhile, a .500 record is reasonable with this year's rotation.

    There are probably at least 40 million reasons why they demoted Bello instead of Sale or Kluber... but one of them isn't stuff.

    They'd rather have Bello playing in Worcester than sitting on the bench in Boston. He's got a great arm, so Bloom's plan might be to get him some reps at shortstop and in right field to improve his versatility. They couldn't send Kluber down to play SS or RF, because he only throws 87 mph now.
