  1. I'll raise you Whitlock over either of them or Paxton. You know, these ole warhorses, we gotta take care of them. I'd say Bello, but you know these young prospects, don't wanna burn them out. Whitlock is locked up, has the arsenal to go three times through, and the reliever gloves are off.
  2. 2013! No wonder: his diet back then was twizzlers and jolly ranchers.
  3. I don't have any more faith in Kluber than I do in Sale. Even though Kluber pitched a full season in '22 for the first time since '18, he'll be 37 in April. If Sale doesn't have as much mileage on his arm after last year, then Kluber does. Old guys break down.
  4. I saw Valdez but never said he was great. But I knew he had a bad rep on D, so I made sure to watch him carefully -- warming up at several infield positions -- and he fielded all his plays, finished with strong throws, and looked like a professional ballplayer. He also swung from the heels at every pitch and pulled one over the road in Worcester and hit the building across the street. I can't say any of those things about Jarren Duran, who made the big leagues in two years so far. But I was always excited about seeing him in Boston after reading of his potential in the minors.
  5. Over half a century later still living in the past. What else is there to go by?
  6. All of it has always been part of the game: spitters, sign-stealing, stimulants (nicotine, caffeine, amphetamines, groupies, and all other PEDs)... Even the honorable concept of a Hall of Famer has always been fraught with hypocrisy, with its undefined character clause... The only player ever qualified for certain under such guidelines is Yogi Berra -- even though his cartoon looks more like a grizzly, and wears a green tie.
  7. Keith Richards was a better investment than Garrett Richards.
  8. Not sure about Perales yet -- 160 pounder, has to mature and fill out; could be a bullpen stud. Mata at 70 pounds heavier may be built more as an innings-eater (yada ya, Mookie's too short and Judge is too big). One of Mayer or Rafaela will be an instant favorite in '24, but plummet from the sophomore jinx in '25... then get really good in '26. Bleis will be 22 by then and will either be our JRod or a Rusney, maybe even traded while there's still potential.
  9. I'm looking forward to Mayer at short and Rafaela in center: coffee in '23, full breakfast in '24, brunch in '25, primed and timed for feasting in '26 -- when Bleis will be the starting rightfielder on the AL All-Star team. By then, maybe Bello-Whitlock-Mata will give Boston its first trio of starting pitchers to each log 150+ IP since Eovaldi-Pivetta-ERod in '21. Maybe the new Red Sox GM will even sign (or trade for) a legitimately durable pitcher in his prime for more than one year. Mix in Casas, Devers, and possibly Yorke and/or Lugo in some combo of 2B/LF/DH... can we hang in there for three more years?
  10. Thanks. There doesn't seem any reasonable way out of paying him what's left on his contract... unless Bloom wants to "sell" a few minor leaguers attached to a package in a trade for someone else's expendable (though "better-valued") roster filler.
  11. Even a young, strong athlete loses a step after blowing out an ACL. But it will be interesting to see who makes a better comeback -- without as many chronic setbacks -- Mondesi or Story.
  12. If the Red Sox had protected Ward from the Rule 5 Draft and exposed Barnes instead, would any team drafting Matt have had to pay his full salary?
  13. Red Sox just gave him an assignment. Bloom: "Give me 1,000 words on Black Sabbath."
  14. Cora just said on NESN last night (taped over the weekend): "Barnes in the 7th, Martin in the 8th, Jensen in the 9th."
  15. Another high-ceiling guy. Sox fans crave middle-of-the-roommates. Happy days will finally come when there's a steady cast sitting at the table around Raffy every night... instead of him eating all alone, looking up, looking down, looking all around.
  16. ... it's when Elias put the shotgun in Taylor's mouth. Up, Up and Away... my beautiful, my beautiful Ba-Loooom
  17. It's not like injuries are the only health issues these days causing players to miss significant time. I still can't believe the Red Sox hung in there for over a week down the stretch in '21 while half the roster was quarantined with Covid. We can rag all we want about Cora and Bloom, but they really did their jobs steering the club to the playoffs and getting by with Iglesias, Arauz, Jack Lopez and Taylor Motter.
  18. And that's your team. Mondesi will only make $3M -- Iglesias made $5M last year, and Elvis was never coming here for $15M. Cora said the other night that Kike is his shortstop, but he'd have to take care of him (after his injury). Maybe Mondesi, another speed guy, can give Kike some rest... or allow him to roam to second or centerfield once a week.
  19. The whole Beni deal just seemed unnecessary, because if it wasn't, it can be considered an indictment of the whole Bloom Era. My thoughts at the time of the Beni trade: 1. why sell low? 2. Beni is due for a few million more in arb, so we're dumping him? 3. Since when can't the Boston Red Sox afford a couple mil for a starting position player? Then at the time of the Renfroe deal: 1. we're doing this again, because now he's due for a raise? 2. I know this isn't because they expect JBJ to replace 30 HRs-90 RBI, so Bloom must be taking on his contract for ... 3. Binelas and Hamilton -- power and speed; ok, hope one makes it soon. And now, the same winter the White Sox give Beni the largest contract in franchise history (around twice Renfroe's AAV), the Red Sox sign a guy who's never had an MLB at bat... for more money. Man, a lot is riding on Yoshida for Bloom.
  20. Laugh babies are still happy Hill got pulled by LA with a one-hitter in the 7th in Game Four of the '18 World Series.
  21. If you consider McGuire -- a career back-up -- "significant longterm talent" -- power to people right on. When I see regulars from the greatest team in franchise history traded, I'm also not hoping for guys who might contribute, like Winckowski.
  22. Are there any Red Sox fans who don't expect at least equal value back in the context of trades? None of Bloom's major trades have added significant longterm talent to the Red Sox. Getting McGuire for Diekman was a wash, since Diekman was Bloom's fault in the first place. It was great Schwarber helped them make a run, but he obviously wasn't valued enough to be part of the core going forward. I still have hope for the Vazquez and Renfroe returns. I have absolutely none for the Benintendi haul. I like Verdugo, because he helped get rid of Price, but Dugie will have to buy a ticket to visit the Hall of Fame to see Mookie's plaque someday.
  23. This was widely discussed here, but never from management -- except the point when they tried it with Houck... who then made the personal choice not to be the closer in every city in the AL East.
  24. In a Winter Weekend interview shown on NESN, Cora was asked how he was already game-planning. Some of his combos were predictable: Yoshida-Devers to bat 1-2... two lefties but Sox could be up 2-0 instantly; bullpen -- Barnes in 7th, Martin in 8th, Jensen 9th... Grateful for Kenley, AC gave a nod to Bloom, who he said knows how important it is to him to have a closer, especially after not having one for so long (...it's irksome, and perhaps telling, that had to be said).
  25. I dunno -- everyone is good to go right now. According to interviews at Winter Weekend, Sale-Whitlock-Houck are all fully recovered and ready to rock -- on the same weekend in January! We're saved! Still not sure about Paxton, though -- he may not be ready yet to fly like an eagle... would you take: howl like a beagle?
