  1. Watching clips of yesterday's three Abreu HRs: swing has definite lift, all were total bombs... but every flag on the high poles beyond the bleachers was blowing straight out. WOO!
  2. Godzilla is public enemy #1 in Boston -- as far as Pedro-killing... ... but what do these Red Sox have that Ichiro and Ohtani do not: Matsuzaka, Okajima, Uehara, Tazawa? (hint: rhymes with bling)
  3. My pleasure. I love looking back at that class. And Sam wasn't interested in trading any of those guys, either (though Dombro finally moved Margot in a package that helped make the Sox a first-place team).
  4. I know you want to say 2014... ... but we both know that, first, some of these guys have to make the majors -- and ideally, combine to win a World Series... Sox Top 5 2014 preseason prospects (Fangraphs): 1. Bogaerts, 2. Bradley, 3. Garin Cecchini, 4. Betts, 5. Swihart. Sox Final 2014 prospect rankings (Bleacherreport)... Bogie, JBJ, Mookie, Vazquez and Workman were now graduates... but still: ... #1-5: Castillo, Swihart, Owens (EL Pitcher of the Year '14), Cecchini, Margot ... #6-10: ERod, Barnes, Ranaudo (EL Pitcher of the Year '13), DEVERS, Chavis So ALL Top 10 Red Sox prospects on the final list at least made the Show. Will the 2023 farm be the best in a decade?
  5. You mean staying out late partying every night, like he was some modern-day Disco Denny? I never said the Red Sox should force a workload on Bello that didn't destroy all those starters Moon listed from the 80s who each averaged 200 IP per year for at least a decade. But what about this: my 12-year-old -- who's a lot sharper than me -- said he wonders if Bello is the one with the bad habits (young stud living in Boston with big league money), because he absolutely sucks in the daytime. My kid has a lot of Sheldon in him, but I went ahead and looked up Bello's splits to be sure... night games: 8-3, 2.71, .229 BA... vs. day games: 0-4, 7.33, .339 BA. YIKES.
  6. I don't care what he is being paid or that he's a one-tool player. Teams need guys that can hit, and if Yoshida is Top Five in batting average (like he's been all season, in his first year in the AL), that can only help make an offense better. Masa is not a superstar or MVP type, but there will always be a place in a batting order for someone like a Luis Arraez.
  7. It's funny, because he seems like a good guy in public. But it's getting to the point that his words, actions and inactions -- along with subsequent W-L records, and place in standings -- make me almost hope Bloom is either in over his head or just a puppet on ownership strings. I don't want him to be full of crap.
  8. Found this quote about Cy from AG Spalding: "We're gonna take care of this kid"
  9. Game stories show concern about poor Bello and all the innings he's throwing this season. He's only 24 and already thrown over 100 -- and last year (majors and minors combined) threw over 150! Clemens threw 254 IP, plus 34 more in the postseason, when he was 23 in 1986. To show how taxing that was, the next year he threw 281 IP. From '86-96 Roger averaged 249 IP in Boston (this all happened before he changed his training in Toronto). Hurst averaged 232 IP in Boston, in his 25 to 30 age years. Boyd, who threw 272 IP at age 25 in 1985, averaged 224 IP over a 10-year MLB career. Ojeda averaged 200 IP for 15 seasons. That was all done in an era when athletes were smaller, weaker and slower... compared to today.
  10. Is it bad when your wild card-pretending pitching staff allows four Home Runs to Detroit -- the AL's second-worst HR hitting team (to Cleveland's Garter Belts)
  11. Bad? Bear claw's pitch hit Carpenter's bat halfway down the handle, went straight up, and landed in some doofus' beer cup on the monster.
  12. But the blue one, to match the missing helmet -- City Disconnect On second thought, keep yer head. With only two frames left, no need to stick our necks out to watch 89 more Sox' pop-ups...
  13. Paint no sunshine when they're home Bats ain't warm when they away Paint no scoreboard when Raffy's head is gone And it's been gone too long Anytime... home or away...
  14. You know Bloom isn't criticized for all the supplemental, platoon players or roster depth he's added that actually contribute to a winning cause. And yet, reposting lists like these that show the so-called "good moves" reveal the issue: where are the major impact players at impact positions that can and do put big market teams in the World Series? Without going over every guy on the list, who had more than a few impact months for Boston? I've got one full year of Whitlock in relief. Hopefully, Martin and maybe Jansen will stay consistent and join him this October. Or maybe Turner or Yoshida will stay healthy and consistent with the bats. But here's the thing about Bloom and impact guys -- they either leave, like Mookie and Xander, and are not replaced with other stars -- or they never sign in Boston or are acquired to lead the Red Sox -- like at the top of the rotation.
  15. Don't worry -- if they're coming off the IL, that means they're all cured.
  16. Kids these days
  17. Damn, Max -- you solved the latest restgate! And also reinforced why Cora is such a players' manager. What a guy. re. Turner: hate to say it, but he could be toast -- at least as the repeatable clutch-hitting hero of this season. Bad heels don't heal quickly on mere mortals, not to mention wheel-abusing 38-year old pro athletes.
  18. Whoa -- who would've thunk it. And using the lip-reading test on telecasts, Duran may also be outhumbling junk-talking Julio...
  19. Yes, if they were serious about making their best run for a wild card. Jordan Montgomery giving them 5-6 IP per start would've already made a huge difference in preserving the actual Big League relievers in the bullpen, plus Chris Stratton would've given them the missing RHP for the late innings to replace bargain bin waiver wire DFAed minor league detritus. And no matter what Sam Kennedy says, relying on injured guys coming off the IL isn't as good as acquiring healthy guys having good years. But we are where we are... and can only hope we don't fall a game or two short of the Jays for the postseason.
  20. Well, the Cardinals traded a decent starter and a reliever having a good year for two Rangers' prospects in the #11-15 range (plus a big league reliever). But far be it for me to equate actual prospect numbers -- or assume St. Lou would prefer guys from the Sox' 4th-ranked farm, compared to Texas' 7th-ranked farm, per fangraphs. All Cora really needed was one. more. legitimate. starting. pitcher in the Toronto series -- instead of having to use back-to-back openers, which caused poor Pablo to burn out his shotputting shoulder heaving 37 mph Leephuses. One win -- instead of getting swept by the Jays -- and the two clubs would be tied today in the loss column... of course, they'd both be chasing the sizzling Mariners.
  21. Monegro moved up to #22 on MLB Sox prospect list... only 4 other pitchers are ahead of him: #9 Gonzalez, # 10 Perales, #16 Bastardo, #18 Drohan. Monegro and Perales are each 20 years old. Interesting to note that the Red Sox current big league leader in WAR -- Bello -- is already 24. He debuted at 23, after rocketing through the system. (man, we're going to be in awe of that 2027 Sox club... those of us old-timers who make it that far)
