    Why not, if they can get two pre-Arb guys who are highly rated by the genius Boston Red Sox? Shouldn't a 50-win team try to stockpile as much talent as they possibly can before they move to another desert?

    Bradish, 4.9 WAR, third for AL starters, behind Cole and Gray. Lost Game 1 in the playoffs, but didn't pitch badly (2 runs, 9 Ks, 1 BB, yanked in the 5th).

    The Sox may be relying on hope for young position players to have break-out seasons: Casas or Duran making an All-Star team, Abreu or Rafaela vying for Rookie of the Year votes, even Teel providing a spark as a late call-up... Imanaga, Stroman and Wacha (coast-to-coast good the past two years) -- would all fortify the rotation, but probably not supply the starting consistency needed to pace the bullpen and boost the Sox into serious contention. No one goes seven innings anymore, but is it asking too much to just complete six; what now constitutes a quality start? Spending big on more "elite" starting pitchers may not make sense in the short run, but having the stability of a stopper or two at the top of the rotation establishes a foundation for longterm success. Inspiring your teammates -- who expect to win every time you toe the rubber -- changes the very culture of a dugout, clubhouse and ultimately, the fanbase.

    I keep going back to Las Vegas and Zack Gelof -- their best player, who has to available on any team that only won 50 games. Gelof was pretty great in half a rookie season: in 300 PAs he was a 14-14 man (HRs/SBs) and had a plus dWAR. The Sox could give the Jokers plenty of value that would help in their annual rebuild... BTV matches Houck or Crawford, or a combo of Rafaela and Schreiber, or Wink and Yorke. Why not.

    If he does, he'll finally make the All-Star team, now that Soto is there to take all the pressure off... ... unless Dick Fitts gets called to Boston and outpitches King in always-sunny San Diego.

    Not many, because most of us would rather spend it on guys we know will pitch again soon. But imagine if Henry approved of the $600M... good thing he canned Bloom first, because he'd be at the front of the GM line to sign someone with the promise of waiting many a moon before the star could shine again. On second thought, maybe Bloom would just take the dough and blow it on 60 rehabbing has-beens on one-year deals...

    Older fans who lived through the last four decades before the century turned would vary. An interesting concept is to contrast Sox fans who grew up in the '00s with those who were kids in the past dozen roller coaster years. Or Yankee fans who grew up in the 70s or 90s, compared to those from the past decade... my son's Yankee fan buddies have never been alive when the Yankees were in a World Series.

    I always make sure to step on the foul lines whenever I'm on a diamond. It actually horrifies veteran baseball peeps. But I will say "no-hitter" when a pitcher is working on one. Like, "This batter is another no-hitter up there. Their line-up is full of no-hitters."

    But if you're the new CBO of the fifth-best team in your division, is it worth giving up one of the top prospects in baseball for a player you're only guaranteed to have for one season?

We hired an ex-reliever to beef up the pitching staff, and Craig has already acquired half a dozen big bullpen arms. And our next CBO will be an ex-hitter, who will then focus on adding OPS guys..."

    Burnes also has the Boras' factor; the Sox can't possibly trade a top prospect and potential future All-Star like Mayer or Anthony for one year of a good pitcher attached to a 99% chance of not agreeing to a longterm extension once in Boston...

    Burnes may be unlikely, because the Brewers will want pitching in return, and it doesn't make sense to deal Bello (who, let's face it, is probably the Sox only young MLB pitcher anyone really wants for a big chip).

    Don't be so shellfish. I do suspect Brez to ink a pitcher from Japan, but at a lot better savings and a lot less risk than Yo Yama... ... and after he signs Imanaga, he'll swing a big blockbuster for another starter and regular position player that will blow up the board.

    I once knew a guy who, when we entered an establishment, would scope out the best lookers -- and always approach their friends instead. The other men blew a lot of time and money competing for the high-demand elites. But my pal was never lonely...

    Not sure if owners of the Red Sox feel quite the same way about their club. Ever-increasing irrelevancy may bother them, but Fenway still thrives as a lucrative tourist attraction, especially now with more tickets available to fans from opposing teams happy to invade Boston on group road trips.

    A few notions we should prepare for: if Breslow isn't going to overpay for a free agent pitcher, then at least one of the red names will be traded soon; also, if the org decides instead to go with the org, the ETA for others may be accelerated (to even 2024)... especially, mound prospects, who the new pitching regime may want to work with more in-person; finally, look for some of the names at the bottom of the list to double or triple their value next season -- who do you like?

    Breslow is so smart, that he left two pitchers exposed to get picked out of the top six selections -- just to open up a spot for an arm he coveted from Texas, that the Mets agreed to draft and immediately flip to Boston in an obviously pre-determined agreement. This is how molecularly physical our new CBO is: Boston set a record for losing the most guys on Rule V Day WHILE trading up for their top choice (that they somehow seduced another club to nab...)...

    I totally expect Breslow to acquire a viable right-handed hitting outfielder soon (and this will be an immediate difference from Bloom, who identified the same need in early '22 and took a year to fill it). If Duvall is resigned, he can play LF, while Yoshida DHs more. Or someone like Gurriel or Teoscar may be in LF, with Duran and maybe Michael Taylor platooning in CF (unless Duran is traded), and a rookie platoon of Abreu/Rafaela in RF. Taylor, a Gold Glove, actually hit 21 HRs last year.
