    If people want to totally dismiss ST results, ok -- but then maybe it's not automatic to bet big on the mighty Baltimore O's. The Red Sox had the best home record in baseball in exhibition games, which maybe isn't a big deal, but it doesn't suck. Fans of clubs that had crappy home records -- when most of their big leaguers faced road teams of mostly minor leaguers -- might be worried, though...

    If the offense is really the key to the season, then Fatse and the batting coaches have to emphasize a better approach to breaking balls. Voices in the booth talk about the revamped Sox pitching focus on offspeed stuff, and how it's reflecting a trend in the game. Every position player that makes the majors had to be able to hit a fastball, with elite hand-eye coordination. But guys that can't recognize or get fooled by sliders, curves, sweepers and change-ups -- and flail, get constantly banged on check-the-check, or even just try to pull and roll over... have trouble staying in the bigs. It's not only newbies like Ceddanne or Abreu, but Story, Wong, O'Neill, Masa, just about anyone but Raffy, who has superior bat-to-ball skills (and can line bouncers off the dirt if he wants). Casas and Duran improved last year -- and we can only hope that a guy like Grissom, who doesn't K a lot, gets here ASAP.

    If the business model is not to spend to recruit reinforcements outside the org -- or (excuse me, Brez) not invest in "external" talent -- until all the prospects we're counting on ultimately make the bigs -- then why throw money away on dumpster dives when we can just develop our own paid-for putridity. We have new magic pitching experts who are going to defy every other evaluating voice in the industry...

    Slaten will make trading veteran relievers possible. Maybe we'll get the next ERod, who was acquired for a veteran big league reliever. Maybe we already have him in Sandlin, who I have high hopes to take a regular turn in the rotation later or sooner. Maybe by then we won't be doomed to cite the good half-seasons of a guy like Pivetta... nothing personal, moon, but when I read that post I thought, This is what they've reduced us to... Btw, Pivetta's career ERA as a starter is pushing 5, same as Giolito's the past two seasons.

    Ya, it's prob more a reflection of the desperation for pitching across the game (and the sorry state of elbows). But for a team with such putrid pitching prospects, you'd think it would be worth it to protect as many as possible, instead of blowing a million bucks a shot on future dumpster roulette.

    The Sox came in last two years ago and added a two-time Cy Young... and sustained their status woe! Can the Sox even lose the division? Don't they need to be in contention before they can blow it?

    You have to admit one thing we've all been frustrated by the past half decade is Boston's catastrophe of a developmental pitching department. So when several Red Sox minor league pitchers get Rule V drafted by other teams the past two years, it's understandable when fans wonder WTF.

    ... but they had a playoff game! Most intense one-game everything-on-the-line showdown between the two best teams who also hated each other the most. (I actually had predicted a Red Sox-Yankees one-game division tiebreaker, back when my pals and I made annual preseason predictions every year... only, it was in 1976 -- when NY exceeded and Bos failed).

    His patience at the plate puts him on base more than anyone, so ideally he'd bat right in front of Raffy. But Cora loves Duran at leadoff and we all know there's no way he'll bat three lefties in a row... .... maybe Yoshida's translator can tell Cora how his WBC team batted five lefties in a row and won the world!

    By default they have to bat Story third in Turner's old spot because the Bloom-built lineup is so lefty-heavy. He won't replace Turner's relentless, two-strike go-to-right-and-move-the-runner approach -- but maybe supply more XBH jolts and obviously more speed on the bases. Ceddanne's OBP may really be a key, because then Cora can deploy his quick three -- Story, Rafaela and Duran -- in an all-out assault on pizza boxes. If only each can maintain a 1-for-3 OBP - which Story did in the NL, Rafaela did in the minors, and Duran did last year (actually .346)... But a good hit-and-run batter might really come in handy with this offense.

    I agree with the outlook of one poster who said the '24 Red Sox may have a worse record than last year, but be more fun to watch. If anything else, the defense is better at SS and CF, and the starting rotation -- as unproven and thin as it is -- is relying on no old broken down pitchers. I'm not sold on the offense exceeding the output of '23, after losing its most consistent hitter and another longball threat who was more streaky, but capable of carrying the club for a few weeks. It's easy to say you expect better seasons from half the batting order, but that's a stretch without significant established additions in the line-up to work pitchers into making more mistakes. What may be hard for fans to accept is that Casas, Ceddanne, Bello and even Grissom might be as good as it gets for the near future. All of them could be better than the prospects the front office is touting behind them -- who just might be overrated by an organization trying to justify not spending to recruit top MLB talent.

    Right now, Grissom is just a tenant in the House of Mystery. He tried to sneak out a window, but pulled up lame. Then one of the gargoyles from the roof stuffed him back inside.

    The reason they got rid of Sale is so he wouldn't take 10 starts away from the promising younger pitchers practicing under the tutelage of a new and improved pitching-focused organization; losing a few more starts each might impede their progress this year.

    Are we to assume they already told Joely he wasn't going to make the staff? If so, who are the lefty relievers that we're keeping instead? There must be more than one; after all, there are no southpaws in the starting rotation -- so I must ask: Is this pitching staff as constructed one that looks like it can go deep in the postseason?

    Good feature on Kyle Teel by Tara Sullivan in today's Globe. His brother, Aiden, now a two-way player at Virginia, said: “He has the best personality, he’s always bringing energy, and I know that will continue. He’ll bring it all to Fenway Park.” Wait til we're done waiting!

    Fans are such complainers; the Red Sox give them all these championships, but the moment ownership wants to give them the 16th-worst club for half a decade, the paying customers grieve like they're cult followers of a demagogue.

    Love the reports this winter on Grissom's potential, and really want to like him, but still have never seen him play. Ghost acquisitions of the Bloom Era: McHugh, Lucroy, Paxton ('22), Mondesi, Grissom... Fullmer... Hendricks... who else -- Montgomery?

    Criswell is one of those guys who would have a great two months for the Rays, and they would trade him right before he turned into Bearclaw for somebody else's benchwarmer who is just about to erupt into a .400 hitter vs. lefties.
