    Just wondering if pitches seen per at bat are figured into any WAR formulas? There has to be some additional value for a batter who commands the strike zone and thus commands extra focus from stressed pitchers -- who are then more apt to make mistakes to subsequent hitters... Here are some career pitches per plate appearance from bb-ref: Schwarber 4.23, Judge 4.23, Soto 4.13, Casas 4.13, Boggs 4.13 Betts 3.97, Ohtani 3.96, Jackie Bradley Jr. 3.90, Bonds 3.89 JD Martinez 3.88, Devers 3.81, Yoshida 3.78, Rafaela 3.67 Records not available for Ted Williams, so the modern winner may be Rickey Henderson 4.34... in 7.854 PA he saw 34,058 pitches!

    Not a bad argument, and it reminds me in a way of the excuse Bloom made at Winter Weekend a few years ago for trading Betts: the Red Sox couldn't surround him with whatever -- a sustainable core, young talent, cheap talent... But when it came to extending Raffy, said Chaim, "You know what's coming, so we're willing to make that bet!" Several crap place finishes later, it's still coming... Meanwhile, as much as Soto was a perfect fit in New York, now that another Judge postseason disappearing act is in the books, does anyone think the Yankees would have made it to the World Series without him? How about even winning a round in the playoffs? Does anyone doubt Soto could do the same thing to help boost Boston and its big slugger, Mr. Devers... like, a lot sooner than any fan can dream possible? Certain superstar power can make that much difference in the way all other hitters in the lineup are pitched to. The Yanks can instead sign Bregman, Adames, Alonso and Santander, and still not be as good in 2025 -- without Soto looming in the batting order.

    The Red Sox are definitely interested... in driving up the price for Soto. They need to make the Yankees spend as much money as possible, but it will still be a miracle New York doesn't spend whatever it takes to land the real free agent prize of the offseason: Tanner Scott. Q: How important it is for Boston to somehow sign Scott and keep him out of pinstripes (or O's orange, Blue Jay blue or whatever crappy colors the Rays wear)? A: Scott vs. the Red Sox, July 4, 2024: (9th inning) Devers strikes out swinging, Refsnyder strikes out swinging, Yoshida strikes out swinging.

    Guaranteed $45M -- even if you blow out a ligament trying not to break a finger smashing a big screen TV falling off your stationary bike? Most of these elite athletes have elite confidence in themselves, but most are also smart enough to sign for twice as many millions of dollars... once they're pushing 30 years of age, that is.

    If the Sox go bold on bullpen -- as in overpay for Tanner Scott in a fierce bidding war -- then they stay away from longterming Burnes or Fried. But I'm good with Scott, and Jeff Hoffman, who wants to start (but who we know was an All-Star reliever in '24). The other rotation pieces will be a Manaea reunion with Bailey, and a trade for a lefty -- but not Crochet... ... Ryan Weathers, 24, from Miami -- come on up!

    Fried sounds like the perfect guy to add depth to Boston's rotation... of rehabbing IL pitchers. Just to be on the safe side, the Sox should wait until he has that second surgery, then pay him to rest, recuperate and come back as good as a new name hanging in a clubhouse locker. When he suits up, said Sam Kennedy next summer -- referring to two summers from now -- he'll be better than any trade deadline acquisition we can find (especially since he'll be all paid for... well, except for what we'll owe him for player options he can exercise while not throwing most of the next half decade).

    Here's where Tom Warner should step into the negotiations: Roki's a young guy, Boston's a college town -- what could be more appealing than all those co-eds in attendance at Fenway Park, taking advantage of all those special student discount tickets?!?!

    Why not? As notin points out, the Red Sox are so rich, they can easily add all three of Fried, Roki and Crokie... ... if John Henry wants. The rest of the Nation certainly wants -- as opposed to another wrong winter of lowering the gross irrational product.

    And don't forget, after they trade for Crochet, it's going to cost another $20M once they extend him; $100M for 5 years? (... using the Phillies' 2020 comp for Dan Wheeler -- 5 for $118M -- at age 29. Wheeler was an innings eater for the Mets but not yet a star or Cy candidate).

    Ya, and 30 years later, any rotation contrast of righties and/or lefties might only affect a couple of at bats per batter per series, since starters are lucky to last five innings. Nowadays, it's much more important to have a tough southpaw reliever available late in the game to get lefty hitters out with low-breaking sliders or sweepers. Up and in gas can also do the job, just don't miss down and in... (this whole post is another plea to sign Tanner Scott, who may have more bidders than Soto and Sasaki).

    Yup, about the same chances of Brez being allowed to sign any pitcher more costly than maybe Manaea... and that even includes Buehler, who doesn't have a Qualifying Offer.

    He wouldn't pay market prices to keep the Red Sox best all-around player in modern history. But only a few years later, he paid to keep a one-dimensional slugger. Yet John Henry doesn't seem impulsive, like most rich men at the top of their industries used to doing whatever they want and not having to pay the consequences. Henry remains calculated. He knows the Red Sox need talent at the top of the starting rotation, but is also surely aware the Dodgers just won the World Series using an opener and bullpen game. If JH thinks Soto will be a better longterm business decision, he may be inclined to make the investment (instead of spending big on pitchers, whose entire careers hang by the thread of an elbow ligament). Just look at all the other sports and tangents he's spent on post-Mookie.

    As long as he hits 40 homers a year and walks a million times, fans will tolerate his D, the way they did Manny's. The young outfield core of Ceddanne, Roman and Wilyer can cover center and right -- and they're all better defenders than Johnny Damon, who the Sox won a title with, next to Manny being Manny out there. (Duran will be dealt for a starting pitcher... and he still might, if they sign Teoscar instead of Juan).

    I was perplexed they risked letting him opt out if he had a good year. But your research shows they weren't worried. Now even if he has great year in '25, his two-year stint averages out to mediocrity... ... unless evaluated by the same scale as math test scores; in that case, 100 + 0 divided by 2 = 50 (still a failing grade, especially for a combined $38.5 million -- but if Boston really likes Giolito, they can keep him for another $19 mil or so for '26).

    It would also drive Cora insane to have to load up one end of the batting order with all tough lefties, and the other with weak righties. It's why he often hit Ref and Romy in the middle of the line-up last year... But if the Sox sign Fried and Buehler, and trade for Crochet, then I'm all in on Soto playing in front of the Monster for the next decade.

    Everything, every team, flows from the top of the rotation. It doesn't matter if you're trying to advance in the postseason or trying to advance out of last place; it all starts with starters. That's why it's baffling whenever someone posts -- in any year -- "this isn't the right time to add an ace pitcher" or "we don't want to waste him." It's always the right time, and he's never wasted. The only thing wasted is the fans' time watching a group of #3s and #4s all year instead... That's also why when the Red Sox acquired Schilling to pair with Martinez, who fronted Wakefield, Lowe, and Arroyo, it formed the starting rotation for the best Boston second-place team this century.

    We're not saying Giolito can't be good again, but my point from the day of his signing is that he didn't just have a bad month or two at the end of 2023. He had overall bad stats for two straight years -- 2022 and 2023. And the worst part for the Red Sox -- who have recruited and paid starting pitchers for less than market prices for over half a decade now -- is that they gave Giolito a top rate to sign... and didn't even get what they paid for.

    The word on MLB Sirius is that Hoffman -- All-Star reliever -- wants to be a starter in '25, and go the route of Crochet, Eflin, Hicks, Lopez, Whitlock ad nauseum... Would Barnum and Bailey recruit him for their circus?

    Those 4 HRs (you meant to type 1990, his last year in the minors) is why Lou Gorman should've consulted his farm directors and scouts, who knew Bagwell's potential. That season he led the Eastern League in hits, doubles, triples, total bases, and was second in OBP, OPS and BA -- .333, one point behind a guy with over 100 less PA. Jeff's 4 HR were second to team-leader Eric Wedge's 5... don't know if you've ever been to the "old" Beehive Stadium, but back then the bees themselves had to be on steroids to fly from home plate over the fence. At the time, I think the all-time NB season record was held by Ellis Burks -- who hit 14 total. Mo Vaughn, who was from Connecticut, led the club one year with 8.
