  1. Henry and the front office are patiently sticking with their longterm plan. They'll wait to promote top positional first-rounders until each of their 27 top pitching prospects hit their "ceiling as back-end starter" ... "You can never have enough dingers," blabbed Sam. "We're confident the core of our batting order will out-homer our 'pitch-to-sweetspot' mound staff. And any Rich Hill training all summer throwing Little League BP will be better than a 50 or 60-year old we can sign from the adult old-timers' leagues."
  2. And single ticket buyers like me... ... but they don't care about procrastinators like me, who are only waiting to pay to watch big leaguers in person when the Red Sox pay for more big leaguers to play for them.
  3. But what will he be looking for through that scope? The postseason? A pennant? A ring? Banners, plural? Yes to any of these questions requires talent on the mound -- whenever that rebuild begins. Don't wait until the position players are all good again before paying for good pitching. Top of the rotation starting pitchers are never wasted -- for so many reasons posted here in the past.
  4. Only the Japanese Hall of Fame
  5. - ago (how do I edit on this new format?)
  6. If only Boston had traded for Crochet a month, he'd be done by now.
  7. Can't believe his very first first-round pick broke his ankle -- before the draft!
  8. WHO exactly are these fans who want their team to improve every summer so they have a chance THAT YEAR to make the playoffs?!?!? The horrors... (don't they all sniff napalm in the morning)
  9. Best chance for the Sox is to have a healthy Devers raking. That's obvious, because... .... what do the three AL Central teams destined to make the playoffs have in common with the Red Sox: all have decent starters, offenses led by a few stars, and a good closer (except for the Royals). The difference is that Cleveland, Minny and KC all get to play the White Sox more than Boston does -- so the Red Sox need to be better than their nearest comp to make the postseason. Problem is, they're not right now... ... but can they be in September? Is there anyone they can call up who could make an impact that might mean three or four more wins???
  10. When Story was lost for another season, he was no longer a future core player, but the regular version of Sale (in Boston). Mayer would take over at short in 2025 and the sustained contending would commence... except now, MM looks just as injury-prone. Story stays, and plays -- and as a good guy and respected vet -- helps middle infield prospects like Mayer and Campbell transition into mainstays. Breslow and Cora might value his leadership enough to keep him around for those overall contributions (notice how Trevor sits right next to Alex in the dugout at all the games).
  11. I get your point, too. I've just always preferred star power on the pro sports teams I root for -- and everyone can pile on about how the Red Sox teams in the 70s and 80s and 90s always fell short, but probably around 75% of those clubs had a shot, while fans lived and died with their heroes, who were mostly around the next year to give it another go. Winning it all is great, but probably not as much if its just cheering for jerseys with different faces poking out on teams that tear down and build back up a lot. Club owners should never take for granted how a fanbase identifies with favorite players -- or underestimate the impact of that factor.
  12. I'm rational enough to know that every year only one team wins the last game of the season. And I'm ok if the Red Sox contend like they did for most of my life -- and not pretend, like they have the past half decade. I'm not some arrogant old Yankee fan who says the season is a total failure if they don't win it all. Kids born in the past 15 years don't even know what that means.
  13. I don't think I'm even there, any more. Here are two things that can no longer be included in the same sentence. Pitchers. Long-term health and production. If Gammons came back from the future 2035 to tell me Anthony will win 10 Silver Sluggers, and Crochet and Skubal will each win a Cy Young AND a World Series, but only pitch for five years... I'm taking the position player.
  14. If he doesn't, then the Sox should offer him a contract next winter that allows him to opt out if he has a good year, but guarantees to pay him for two years if he misses the entire season on the IL... ... just let most companies in the world who not only won't pay for quality, but will pay twice as much if production sucks or is worthless.
  15. Anthony is almost at the point where he'll no longer be considered a prospect. That doesn't mean he'll only have one more month in Triple A or that he'll be the majors' next superstar, but he'll be a big league regular very soon -- and the Red Sox will have to and want to make room for him. The Nationals recently called up outfielders James Wood and Dylan Crews, and both are thriving so far. Wood played 283 games in the minors, Crews 135 (after playing D1). Anthony's at 224 and counting...
  16. Duran can be a wingnut, but continues to mature as a professional. In a competitive industry like sports, it's a given you have to be cocky to be good. But you also don't trade a star MLB position player who can impact every game for a starter who might pitch once a week. Duran isn't Luis Arraez, the best contact hitter in baseball, who has been dealt twice the past two years. He's the first 10-20-30-40 (3B, HR, SB, 2B) player in history...
  17. Best game Sale threw for the Red Sox all season. Boston now three in the loss column behind Minny. Sox do have Bello and his team-leading 12th win with an 8 IP- 2 H- 9K- 0 ER game.
  18. The '04 D was rank, all right. That's why Epstein went for gloves at the deadline. Nomar and his batting crowns were traded, replaced by Orlando Cabrera and his Gold Glove. Also acquired was Doug M's late-inning first-baseman's mitt (plus Dave Roberts' legs for pinch-cursebreaking). That Boston roster had historic bats -- seriously, eight batters with 85 or more RBIs in '03 -- but the braintrust determined they couldn't win it all without better defense. And it didn't start in July; before New Year's Eve they signed Pokey Reese as a back-up infielder... and only four players in the AL had a better dWAR in '04. Balance.
  19. You're just saying that because shortly after both those Red Sox teams won the World Series, they gave away to big market rivals their best player/WAR leader/future Hall of Famer, and each won rings for their new clubs.
  20. All-World OF: Anthony Catcher: Teel Second base: Campbell Shortstop: ARIAS (MLB starter by the time Story's contract expires) Trade ASAP before his value totally plummets to an org rife with pitching: Mayer... ... even if the return is a mere "Ceiling of mid-rotation starter" -- that would then give the entire current Red Sox farm system TWO arms of that status, along with Perales, according to recent prospect analysis.
  21. I was looking at that duo in the current context of Red Sox pitching investments. John from Yacht World just called in: "Every pitcher we sign BURNES us! And if you think I'm spending on anymore, I'm FRIED!"
  22. Covid actually knocked more key guys off the roster in August of '21 -- a lot of people forget that three-week stretch when everyone was catching it from each other, and Cora kept the Sox' playoff hopes alive with a bunch of scrubs. It is probably the most underrated highlight of his managerial career.
  23. The inconsistency has been pretty consistent since the All-Star break. 53-42 on July 14. 14-22 since... Burn out the starters. Burn out the pen. Three years in a row (more if we count 2021, when Covid contributed a small gargle size). How can the front office not notice a pattern when the fans notice a pattern.
  24. According to a NESN graphic last night, the '24 Red Sox are currently two wins BEHIND the '23 Red Sox at this point. But have a little faith, peoples -- with five games left this month, Boston could go 3-2 and still finish August with a losing record, extending their DOG DAYS losing streak to 879 Augusts in a row.
  25. "their" (typed a typo, just to see if I could edit... pushed all the buttons, but they're mostly features there)
