  1. Story. It's not hard to imagine he's not physically able to handle the rigors of shortstop -- for whatever reasons (old or new) -- while at the same time, Mayer crushes the next month in FLA.
  2. "Pair of Sox Dig in Heels, Side-Step Selfishness"
  3. Can't start Campbell yet, when Griz and Hammy haven't done enough to prove they deserve a seat in a big league dugout. If a guy doesn't have the red ass, how's he supposed to warm the bench? This has to be what Sam Kennedy means when describing the org's "burning desire to win championships."
  4. Minor Leaguers. I'd rather watch Hendriks pump his fist... but not burn his guitar; what a waste of a Fender Stratocaster.
  5. Of course almost all prospects grow up playing shortstop, where the best players always play, and we've had plenty of drafts where the Sox load up on best players available -- to be moved to another position at a later date. It's almost another cliche now to wonder if anyone "can stick at SS." But of all the shortstops on Soxprospects, it still looks like Mayer is their choice as the most likely... even if they also see him as a potential third baseman.
  6. This is all about not re-ripping his core muscles by letting it fly on every swing. Big guys could hurt themselves more that way (right, Raffy?). If Casas stays consistent with this approach, he'll keep his head on the ball longer, and make better contact -- with the sweet spot and the Green Monster -- and could raise his batting average 20 points. It's like when Bregman says he envisions flashlights on each hip when he's in the box, and making sure he's shining them into the opposite dugout as he swings. He's not pull happy like some reporters describe him, and is still the only big leaguer I've seen take an entire bucket to the oppo field during pregame BP...
  7. Surprised Arias, who was signed as a "glove-first shortstop", is now rated by Soxprospects as only as a potential "average defender at shortstop." But they like him better as a second baseman! Just like Romero... and Cespedes... Dorion Soto anyone?
  8. You know I've always been on their side, because of the hypocrisy of the MLB rules vs. the very concept of the sport. It's just like when museums tell art thieves, "You're allowed to steal, but you can't use night-vision goggles to detect lasers that can set off alarms."
  9. ... or shortstop. No one should be surprised if he plays at least a few innings there, as well. Cora trusts him complicitly.
  10. Whether anyone thinks this is a nothing or something burger, we can all agree Red Sox Nation needs Devers to be much more than a quarter-pounder with cheese... at least a whopper. OPS (On Plate Saturation): Quarter-pounder with cheese: 417 calories Whopper with cheese: 790 calories Wendy's Pretzel Bacon Pub Triple Heart Attack: 1,520 calories
  11. Grissom didn't have the arm from second last year, but he put on 80 pounds of muscle this winter, so hopefully some of it is in his throwing shoulder and plant leg. Without any confirmation whatsoever but my own ignorant bliss, I'm declaring today that if AB and Raffy are both on the IL, Mayer will get the call for a cup of expresso at third base. Have to admit, as much as Anthony and Campbell have moved ahead in the ratings because of their bats, the most polished on defense right now is Marcelo.
  12. Why do they think Woo, age 25, will be worse (he had 2.4 bWAR last year)? Does anyone realize how good Bowden Francis was in the second half of last season, when he made 10 starts and had a 1.80 ERA with a .140 BA and 0.600 WHIP? In three games vs. Boston, his WHIP was 0.385. If Scherzer can make 20 healthy starts, Toronto's rotation can hang with the Sox. But the Jays' have a huge ish because Vlad's a lame duck, and they may have to take pennies on the dollar in trade -- because who is going to give up legit prospects for a player they know they can't sign?
  13. Ugh -- a whole bleacher section in California of fans wearing Devers skullcaps, and a soft West Coast candy called Freshwater Raffy.
  14. Story won't be able to play, but they'll let him shot put the first pitch.
  15. It better not take him too long for a comeback, because if he waits until midseason when Bregman, Campbell and Yoshida make the All-Star team, it's going to be awkward.
  16. The only peeps are from the peeps with the microphones and notebooks. Raffy didn't go to them and call for a press conference. He just answered questions, just like Casas did. Devers doesn't stay up all night tweeting unhinged outrage in uppercase butchery of his own language. He's not going to demand a trade, or hold out until they send him to a new team. Because even if it's actually mentioned, Rafael Devers isn't going to turn down $30 million dollars to hit a baseball.
  17. Is 2.0 bWAR average for a starter? Maybe average for a solid starter? Every team in the American League had at least one last year, and six had at least three: NY, TB, KC, Minny, M's and Stros. The Royals clearly had the most valuable quartet... but they clearly pitched in the same division as the White Sox. '24 WAR for AL Starting Pitchers (from bottom up): LA: Anderson 3.1, Soriano 2.1; A's: Sears 2.3; Tex: Eovaldi 2.3; M's: Miller 3.4, Gilbert 2.8, Woo 2.4; Hou: Valdez 4.5, Blanco 4.5, Brown 2.6. Chi: Fedde 4.7, Crochet 4.1; Minn: Ober 2.9, Lopez 2.5, Ryan 2.3, Richardson 2.0; KC: Lugo 5.3, Ragans 4.9, Wacha 3.5, Singer 3.1; Det: Skubal 6.3, Flaherty 2.4; Clev: Bibee 2.6. Tor: Berrios 2.2; TB: Littell 2.8, Pepiot 2.1, Baz 2.1; RED SOX: Houck 3.5 (best in East), Crawford 2.0; O's: Burnes 3.4, Suarez 2.1; NY: Gil 3.1, Cortes 2.6, Schmidt 2.0, Cole 2.0.
  18. The rules are clearly laid out in the Umpire's Style book. An official swing by a batter includes the following: - hand movements that cause a decreased angle of the bat from approximately 90 degrees from the elbows to 45 degrees... or 65 degrees... or 89 degrees - chin juts forward at least three inches (or 10 centimeters in international play) - any grin or grimace that shows teeth - raised back eyebrow - walking to the front of the batter's box like Juan Soto for anyone who is not as good as Juan Soto - whatever a base ump 90 feet away from the plate decides, as long as when all eyes and tv cameras are on him, he gets to punch the sky
  19. Put it this way: Crawford's best ability isn't his fallibility. Any pitcher who leads the majors in games started has to at least be good enough and healthy enough to make the starts.
  20. If Story's arm is too "old" they may move him back to second and insert the young stud at short. I don't think they're going to make Bregman an LA Mookie (though he would've had two homers yesterday if the game was up north at Jet Green Park).
  21. And I can hear them say: Hey, you've got to hydro love away...
  22. They're all better than meteorologists -- none of them even study meteors.
