  1. Given the timing and situation, Breslow is not exactly an insider promotion to the head of the "committee" but close. His overall intelligence (molecular biology ?) and actual playing experience, plus becoming a pitching guru makes him a potential right guy/right place/right time . The action starts very soon as the WS will be over triggering FA time, December meetings not far away. Actual time in the Red Sox organization and NE's emotional fascination with this team will help Breslow understand the nuances of why it is a tough job.
  2. That is the protocol so that if the plans do not work out, the Sox only will have to fire 1 person, not the longstanding crew of Kennedy, O'Halloran, Romero, Quintero, etc, all of who have been there for the other guys who rose and fell with the tides. Is the Red Sox FO sclerotic or not ? How did all the capos survive while the boss got whacked ?
  3. So why not Breslow? Only thing I can come up with is that he is a Yale grad like the last guy that got fired recently. On the other hand he did pitch in MLB, so may actually be able to recognize and/or develop pitching talent, unlike the other guy. Since all other place holders in the musical chairs FO and dugout, get to keep their positions what difference would a new head of BOps make anyway ?
  4. The greenies used to be out in a bowl in the clubhouse mixed with M&Ms, circa 1960's , near the coffee and comp cigarettes
  5. Wakabayashi apparently could not translate the coaches instructions to Masataka very well, leading to numerous collisions with the LF wall, and to numerous topped grounders to 1B or 2Bman, sometimes the pitcher. Cora is taking a Babbel course in Japanese this off season.
  6. I guess those teammates couldn't meet Mookie half way and learn a few words in English too.
  7. Neither were the fans nor posters. Bush failed to teach Brasier the one new pitch that would have rebuilt the entire bullpen. Febles was indecisive at 3B waving his one arm while holding up his other hand to stop.
  8. With former Angels/recently Mets GM Billy Eppler now on the market, I hope the Sox pass on the "opportunity" to keep Eppler off the unemployment line. This would not be a choice pick if results are what matters To be fair, Eppler was the GM who got Shohei signed for the Angels 6 years ago. Shohei did miss a year on the mound with his first TJ, so maybe wherever Eppler goes, so goes Shohei. Probably not.
  9. Since this is about 2024, and the Red Sox need for reliable starting pitching , I will throw out that Chris Sale will amaze people by actually contributing in the form of 25+- starts, 140 innings , and a 3.90 ERA . He would get more innings if he did not strike out so many guys. Rationale : Sale is coming up on his contract year , and although wealthy enough , he will be looking for maybe a 2 year deal at $20million per, so he will find a way to extend his frail self to make that happen. I will give the skeptic s, naysayers and medical staff 6 months to prove me wrong.
  10. Please save yourself the brain cells thinking about Mike Trout going anywhere. I live in the vicinity and see all the press. Understand that Ohtani is gone elsewhere , seeking a shot at the WS. LAA has NO other draw and Trout is the face of the franchise, owned by a fool who could have sold it for $3 Billion last year. The fan base is only a step above Tampa's and without a star they have nothing. Josh Hamilton to Anthony Rendon is the arc of this front office under multiple administrations . Managers Scoscia, Maddon and now Nevin could not avoid the total destruction of this team each August/September . This team is jinxed.
  11. To beat the proverbial deadhorse, anyone who saw or read the box score on the Rays-Rangers first game will realize why defense , though third to pitching & hitting, can influence games. Rays made 4 errors but also failed on multiple plays not made. They also chased a lot of breaking balls by Montgomery.
  12. i think there are some clues within the statements made by Cora and Sam K. that the preference will be for someone already in the Sox organization, or perhaps an Executive Committee to be sure everyone has a voice. If so, then write off the next 2 years.
  13. So you think this is the core of a playoff team ready to roll through the playoffs ? I think Jansen is aging and has potential knee or hip wear/tear that will make him less than durable in the second half. The Sox could benefit from getting some value from him . IF they do add a couple of effective starters , there should be some guys in the pen who could close, including Chris Martin.
  14. Why don't the teams shake hands and swap jerseys like in soccer ? Oh yeah, The Orioles need theirs for the playoffs. The Sox game worn jerseys will be on sale on Yawkey Way tomorrow
  15. So who knew that Nick Robertson would get the final out of a long year? Cinched the matching record to 2022. Very exciting
  16. Is Cedanne Rafaela truly ready to be on the big club next April ? Not sure. Maybe a month or two in Worcester to specifically work on pitch recognition wouldn't hurt. Abreu looks more ready , and we don't know how Duran will come through next Spring.
  17. Actually saw Jansen in the dugout on the NESN broadcast, smiling . Time to return to Boston , say adios and take your stuff out of the clubhouse. Please tip the clubhouse staff..
  18. Can the Sox count on Bernardino being effective in 2024 ? One of the pieces found in the Bloom era that actually contributed well. He will be 32 by start of next season but definitely not a worn out arm .
  19. Dalbec gets another golden sombrero.. Imagine being the pitcher who gets pulled ( Lopez) right before Dalbec is due up.
  20. LOL, Sox get 2 more on a bouncer the O's Henderson fail to field. Looks like a win is brewing.
  21. Houck survives midway through the lineup for the 3rd time. Tanner extends the end of year run of shutout innings from the starters. Pressure is off and they all pitch well. Still not scoring much though
  22. Doesn't matter any more but it is notable that Kenley Jansen has not recorded an out since September 4th. He made 2 subsequent appearances but never got an out, losing one on a walkoff HR. Hasn't pitched at all in 19 days . Somewhat attributable to the Sox terrible record in September , precluding the need for a closer, and a bout with a Covid variant. I will guess now that Kenley is on the trade block next July before his contract runs out, even if the team is competing for a playoff slot.
  23. Goodbye Bobby Dalbec. 6K's in his last 9 ABs. A high mark even for him. All the best for a great post career.
  24. Only the 2023 Sox can score 2 without anyone actually getting an RBI. But keep the lead and close the gap.
