  1. It is kind of a traditional honor to be named as the opening day starter. I would think that should go to Chris Sale. I do give him credit for being a good soldier and thanking Cora for skipping him in favor of Kluber. The old Sale might have been a little ticked about it.
  2. Moving guys to various positions seems to be a trend in baseball. Maybe they think the versatility will save some money. I don't know, but it probably originates with the nerds that teams are staffing the front offices with these days. Anyway, it's not a big deal , at least until a Dalbec boots one at short .
  3. With the millions of stats out there these days , I am sure some geek has composed a chart showing the correlation between a team's spring training record and their subsequent regular season record. However, I have neither the time nor the inclination to try and find such a thing. Best advice: If your team has a good spring training record , be encouraged. If your team has a poor spring training record, shrug it off as meaningless.
  4. Did he really get burned so many times that it offset four championships ? Or did he just prefer to spend his dough on other things ?
  5. As always, injuries will play havoc with even the best laid plans. It is usually frowned upon to gloat at another team's injuries while moaning about your team's sick list.
  6. I think Sale is one of the keys to the success or failure of this team ; along with Devers, Jansen and the youngsters Casas and Bello.
  7. Any time you have a new rule/law , people will look for ways to get around it. MLB may or may not look to close this loophole.
  8. Rule changes: Pitch clock : Thumbs up. No shift: Thumbs up. Big bases: Undecided. Pick off limit: Unnecessary. Ghost runner. Thumbs down.
  9. Red Sox injury update from the chief medical officer, Dr. Vinnie Boombatz : Paxton : He will be out for a while with a grade one hamstring strain. For those of you not in the medical profession , we have grades for hamstring strains. Grade one is not as bad as grade two. Grade two is not as bad as grade 3 and so forth. Paxton should be okay as long as he doesn't hurt himself again. Whitlock: We are being careful with him. You will probably be hearing that a lot. Bello: He just has pain in the forearm of his pitching arm. Certainly nothing to be worried about here. Wong: I am still trying to figure out who he is. Will get back to you on him. That's the update for today.
  10. Phillip Farge : " Hello , Mr. Notin . I'm new in town. I hear Chicago is the Windy City. " Notin: " What are you talking about Farge ? I was just down by the lake. Just a nice breeze. Why, Boston is actually windier than Chicago. Chicago is not even the the top ten in terms of average wind velocity. Why don't you learn some Meteorology before you start criticizing Chicago ? " Phillip Farge ( shaking his head ) : " Okay , Notin , maybe I'll see you around sometime. "
  11. Every jabroni has slight potential.
  12. You can love your Lamborghini, but if the gas tank is running on empty, it is probably wiser to take the Jeep.
  13. I am interested in seeing how Duran does this year. It could be a make or break season for him. Obviously, he has fallen out of favor here on TalkSox, but I do think there is an exciting ballplayer hidden in there. Just needs to get out.
  14. The odds are that Song, like so many prospects, will never reach stardom. I am sure that Dombrowski, who has a lot of experience and success, realizes that. But he obviously is familiar with Song and thinks this is worth a shot. He has very little to lose in the whole thing. It certainly seems like it is worth a shot from the Phillies' perspective.
  15. Timmy: " What happened, Dad ? " Dad: " I'm not sure son , but looks like the game is over. Let's go home. Do you want to come again tomorrow ? " Timmy: "Nah. "
  16. Game over. Thanks for coming, fans. How about that exciting finish ?.
  17. The idea of Rule 5 was to prevent teams from keeping prospects in the minors indefinitely. Give the kids a chance to reach the bigs. As with many things, too much tinkering causes it to get convoluted.
  18. I think people are getting a little carried away here. It seems to make sense that you would find room to protect prospects like Ward and Song. ( I have never seen either one of them pitch , nor would I recognize them if they rang my doorbell. ) But it's not as if the roster is so loaded in talent that you can't make room for them. Now, they probably will never amount to first rate MLB pitchers. As always, time will tell. I think Dombrowski sees Song as a low risk, possibly high reward move. No matter what, it's not the end of the world.
  19. Perhaps Sox management should have done a little more homework on this.
  20. Time will tell the tale on Song and Ward. Just on the face of it, it doesn't look like a very smart move to expose promising young talent to the draft while protecting a number of 30 something year old career ham and eggers. Especially for an organization that needs to develop young pitching . And for an organization that likes to talk about cost control , sustainability and " prospects. "
  21. " Extremely thrilled? " Ooh-fah.
  22. It is important for the Sox to get off to a good start. The MLB schedule makers have certainly cooperated in that regard.
  23. The 2022 schedule could have been tougher than it was. In interleague play , the Sox faced the N.L. Central. Certainly easier than the N.L. East or West.
  24. Many years of experience have made me skeptical and cynical . I don't think there are too many things that are entirely fair and square.
  25. Others would cheat. But not our boys. They would never do that.
