  1. Things could change in three weeks, but right now there is no justification to be sellers.
  2. Assigning a number to each of your starting pitchers is meaningless. ( Freddy Fargo is our # 3 starter, but he might be a #2 , etc.) Your rotation has five starters . They will each pitch in sequence. During the season , all of that will be scrambled several times. There is no point in numbering them.
  3. With all that has gone wrong with the starting rotation and the defense, it has been the Sox bullpen that has helped to keep the team afloat. They have one of the lowest blown save percentages ( along with the Giants, Phillies and Blue Jays ) in MLB. You simply have to win the games that you are leading in the late innings. For the most part, they have been able to do that.
  4. It seems like the shortstop position has been reserved ( perhaps prematurely) for Mayer. At least on TalkSox. But Mayer still has to show that he can handle the progression through the minors. He is currently trying to adjust to AA ball.
  5. I agree 100%. Duran should play every day. And he is one of the last guys I would consider trading at the deadline.
  6. I do not think the Sox are sellers at the deadline. Three wild cards makes it too tempting to give up at this point. Selling would further alienate the fan base. And the A.L. East division is not the beast some make it out to be. I think they are pretty much compelled to go for it. And they do have a legitimate shot at making the playoffs.
  7. The thing that surprises me the most is how the Padres are struggling. There is far too much talent on that team for them to be playing this poorly.
  8. I have never been too fond of excuses, spin or " context. " Results are what matters in baseball, as in most things. That is the reality. With Bloom, the results have not been good. The question is: How much longer will he be given to get the needed results ? We don't know the answer to that right now.
  9. If you truly decide to be sellers, Paxton is exactly the type of player you sell.
  10. Rangers got a jump on the trade deadline by acquiring Aroldis Chapman from K.C. He obviously has some baggage, but he is much needed help for their bullpen, which has been their weak area.
  11. There seems to be no indication as to what the Sox will do at the deadline. ( There seems to be an unwritten rule that a team needs to either buy or sell. ) As stated before , the three wild card gimmick gives hope to all but a few of the really awful teams. So, they need to make a decision. As for Bloom ; I have no idea if he is meeting John Henry's expectations, but he is absolutely losing fan support by the day. You can feel it out and about in Sox Nation, as well as on this forum.
  12. The Marlins have some good pitching. Completely shut down the vaunted Sox offense.
  13. Since we don't have access to the books, we cannot know how the teams are doing financially. But if ownership can sell the team for 5 billion, we can assume that it is making very good profits.
  14. Dipre, you weren't around last year, but as the Sox season deteriorated, the battle cry was " 2023 is the make-or-break year. " Not hearing that now. The question is, how much patience should we have? " Wait till next year" can become a bad habit. This is year four of Bloom's tenure.
  15. The biggest problem with the 2019 team was the bullpen. They blew so many leads. I say that now and I most definitely said it back then. It was a good team with a bad bullpen.
  16. First you tell me that John Henry won four championships in fourteen years. Then you say that is not sustainable. Have to do things differently. Well, it's not working.
  17. It's my understanding that the objective with this team was to spend less money while remaining sustainably competitive. They have achieved the first part. They have saved money.
  18. In conclusion , the owner needs to do what it takes to put a good team on the field. In the past, Henry has done that. Other owners have as well. Now, Henry seems to have reversed course. But , no matter what , the owner cannot will the team to win a short series or a single game. Ultimately, that comes down to the Dave Roberts, the David Ortiz', the Calvin Schiraldis , the Bucky Dents, the Bob Gibsons, the Bill Buckners, the Aaron Boones, etc. , etc. In the end, somebody has to make the big play or just be a little lucky. The owner cannot control all of that.
  19. I give him credit for spending what it took to compete with the best teams.
  20. I have been around a long time . And I have seen a number of heartbreaking losses over the years. Outstanding Sox teams that just missed. Many to the Yankees, but also to the Cardinals, Guardians, Reds, Mets and others. Sometimes due to just one play or managerial decision. There is nothing an owner can do about that. That is my point.
  21. You need a good team to begin with. Bloom put this team together. He is responsible for it. In the pre Henry years, the Sox had many teams that were good enough to win it all , but could not quite get it done for one reason or another. There is nothing the owner can do about that. I hope that makes more sense.
  22. The three wild card gimmick gives hope to a lot of teams, Sox included. Some are reluctant to become " sellers " because there is always that chance of getting hot/lucky in the playoffs.
  23. John Henry seems kind of disconnected from the team lately, but I have seen no indication that he is thinking of selling. He does deserve credit for having been willing to spend what it took to make to Sox able to compete with the best. However, praising him for " four rings " is ridiculous. He has no control over that. It is up to the players to make the plays at the right time .Many owners in all sports have built teams with the ability to win it all, but have often come up just short.
  24. The Sox have done just enough to keep a glimmer of hope for an improved second half and a possible playoff run. So, I have not given up on this season as yet. What bothers me is that the Red Sox have lost the look and feel of a big time ballclub. They seem like just another average team. And they seem content with it. And it shows in the declining fan interest. Honestly, it is often more fun to flip the channel and watch former Sox stars playing for another team. And I have done a lot of that recently.
  25. Nothing wrong with using Kluber for three innings in a blowout. No sense in using the better relievers in that game. As for him getting credit for a save, that is just a fluky part of the save rule. It should be changed , but it really doesn't matter. He is not going to get a lot of legitimate save opportunities.
