    The overreaction to the deadline is not surprising. Red Sox fans (and baseball fans in general) are a miserable bunch who thrive on complaining about things. Whether it's " he decimated the farm", " he overpaid" or " he didn't do anything", they will always find reasons to be unhappy. Breslow has previously made moves that turned the Sox from a last place team into a legitimate contender. Now, he is a bum who should be fired because he didn't trade for Merrill Kelly or Joe Ryan at the deadline. But he did pick up two pretty good pitchers who could help down the stretch, without giving up much in return. The outrage we are seeing is unwarranted, but all too familiar and predictable. And please spare me/us the stale cop out line, " I hope I'm wrong ". That sounds so phony. All is not lost. Far from it. This is a good ballclub that is gaining confidence by the day.

    Twins traded Duran to the Phillies.

    The looming deadline is causing an undue amount of stress on the fanbase if some of the comments and suggestions are to be taken seriously. There is no fork in the road this year. Go full speed ahead. Do NOT trade Duran, Chapman or Bregman. Try to improve the team. And always, always, always play to win. This really should go without saying.

    I don't have the will to do any research on this. But I have never before noticed the huge amount of pitching injuries that I see these days. It is stunning. And most are not Tommy John surgeries. Just various injuries.

    There are so many different kinds of bets available these days. A player doesn't have to throw a game to rig a few bets.

    Pitchers have always tried to throw as hard as they could. Today's pitchers do throw harder, but they are also bigger and stronger. It won't happen, but baseball should take a hard look at the pitch clock as a factor in the epidemic of injuries.

    They didn't have a lot of fancy injuries in the old days. They just said the guy had a "sore arm" .

    Hamilton can be useful if you can afford to carry a pinch runner. Teams sometimes do that down the stretch.

    Breslow is a smart guy. And he is a baseball guy. He knows this team is shaping up quite well. He is not going to trade Duran at this point. I think that is becoming clear.

    If the Lords of Baseball had any integrity they would cut all ties with the gambling web sites. But they won't because they are greedy.

    I do think that folks who are writers and folks who are average baseball fans tend to look at many things differently. My vote is to keep Duran, who I view as a key figure in the pennant race and any possible playoff baseball.

    I saw quite a few games at the old Polo Grounds. The Say Hey Kid could cover center field as well or better than anyone. He made the basket catch famous. Another oddity about that ballpark was that the dugouts did not to connect to the clubhouses. The clubhouses were behind center field. When a player left the game, he had to walk all the way through the outfield to reach the clubhouse. In addition to the Giants, a number of championship fights were held in that ballpark. Memories of a bygone era.

    The Red Sox just went 4-5 against some of the best teams in MLB. At no point did they look like they were outclassed or in over their heads. The playoffs are not so different. People overthink the post season. It's just more baseball. There is no team in the A.L. that is better than the teams that the Sox just played. Go for the brass ring. Full speed ahead.

    I don't know nearly enough about economics to have much of an opinion on this. But I know this much: When I was a kid, my father worked an ordinary job. My mother stayed home to raise us kids. We owned a nice home in a nice neighborhood with a reasonable mortgage. We had one car. We never had a lot of money to throw around, but we had enough to live decently. Over the years, due to inflation, that way of life has become nearly impossible for most people. I think the reason for this is that our elected officials of both parties and at all levels of government don't know any more about economics than I do. Maybe less. I have no idea what the future holds.

    There were a lot of Dodger fans in Fenway last night. Let's see what the crowd is like today.

    " Solid " is kind of vague. Of course, it is good to have a staff of quality pitchers. I just don't know why you would number them.

    I have never understood the concept of numbering your starting pitchers. It's not like they are quarterbacks. They all have to pitch in turn. Obviously, some are better than others, but even that can vary from start to start. You have to go with Buehler tonight, even if he is only a number five. You can't start Crochet or Bello.

    The Red Sox becoming sellers at this point is preposterous. I am certain that it is not even a consideration.

    A couple of my quick, but sensible, opinions: Trading Duran would be crazy. He is one of the keys to any success this team will have in the stretch run. Also, the talk that the Sox might make the playoffs, but they could not advance very far and would be quickly eliminated makes no sense at all. Aside from the crapshoot nature of the playoffs, there is not a single team in the A.L. that the Red Sox would not stack up well against in the post season. Finally, I think that Breslow will be able to add at least a couple of helpful additions at the deadline without giving up anything too substantial.

    Mets get hard throwing ( although erratic) left handed reliever, Gregory Soto from the Orioles for two prospects.

    Something going on with Mookie. He is slumping badly. He has had injury issues. Now, there is talk that he could miss the game for some personal reason.

    Yes. When you bunt, a lot can happen, both good and bad. Like I said, sometimes a bunt is a good move, but in general, I would rather see the batter swing away.

    In certain circumstances, a sac. bunt might be the correct call, but as a rule, it is not a good strategy. Even if it is executed properly and moves the runner over you are giving away one out.

    Now, I'm not any kind of expert on athletes' durability or fortitude, now or in the past. And I have no idea if athletes in the past were any tougher than today's athletes. But I'm pretty sure that if there were eight more games in the season in his day, Lou Gehrig would have played in them. I chalk this debate up to " notin being notin ".
