  1. Hard to predict what Kimbrel will get . Most of the big spending contenders are set at closer . How much is a team like Atlanta willing to spend ?
  2. And just a reminder to everyone: If you haven't had your " twitch test " yet , get it done now . It doesn't hurt and you will be better off for it.
  3. Have to love all of these depth signings . Just hope we don't wind up in " the depths ."
  4. We'll see what happens over the next few weeks. I'll feel better if we do shore up the bullpen a bit.
  5. I have to think that if the Sox had any inkling of just how good Betts was , they would not have waited that long to pick him. You don't take those kind of chances.
  6. I think the Astro's pitching will be fine . I see the Rays as improved . I figure the Yankees for Machado. It will be interesting to see who gets Britton. Not sure what the Guardians are thinking , not worried about them anyway.
  7. A big mistake was made after the 2013 championship. Absolutely nothing was accomplished that off season . I felt that complacency was evident. The results were not too good. I think you need to stay aggressive.
  8. What I am saying is that there is no improvement over the team that won it all this year. Basically the same team minus Kelly and Kimbrel . D.D. needs to fill those shoes just to stay as good as we were at the end . Sure , it will be good to have Eovaldi and Pearce from the start .
  9. The Sox were clearly the best team in 2018. So far this off season , the competition is improving while the Sox are having some difficulty just staying the same. It will be interesting to see just how much the others are closing the gap. Perhaps D.D. will still come up with a couple of nice signings before too long.
  10. Dodgers traded Kemp and Puig to the Reds . Guess they are pretty confident about getting Harper.
  11. Calling him a cancer helps my argument that the negative aspects are being overblown. While he is no Mookie Betts or Mike Trout, he is one of the best in the game . I doubt that any contract is going to strangle the Yankees .
  12. We all know that Machado has some baggage. However, I think the negative aspects are being just a wee bit overblown. Whoever signs him will immediately become a better team.
  13. Steamer projects your chances of being claimed on waivers as something less than 0.00 .
  14. Yeah. It does happen. But New York and L.A. possess an allure for the star athletes that they find hard to resist. And they have the dough as well.
  15. Not too many guys prefer Philly or Chicago over New York or L.A. Would have to be a big money differential to change that.
  16. Baseball is a business. No room for loyalty or sentimentality. Can't blame any player for taking the money . When your skills start to decline , the team will dump you in a minute. And the " loyal" fans will turn on you even quicker than that.
  17. Lowering the bar makes it easier for everyone. Except for limbo dancers.
  18. This apparently keeps the Sox in compliance with the little known " Ramirez Rule " , which requires organizations to maintain at least one Ramirez in their system.
  19. The Mets and their new G.M. have been much ridiculed . Maybe people are a little too quick to dismiss them . Personally, I think they have an excellent shot at winning the N.L. East . If I were a Met fan , I would much rather have that than be looking at a " rebuilding " year .
  20. My guess would be Machado to the Yankees and Harper to the Dodgers. Maybe not for as much money as speculated .
  21. Hard to predict. Harper and Machado are two of the best in the game , but both have drawbacks. Mookie Betts and Mike Trout are the only truly transcendent superstars.
  22. I think there remains a feeling that Swihart has the potential to be more than he has demonstrated to date. On the other hand , Sandy Leon is what he is , despite having acquired a fan club of sorts here on TalkSox.
  23. I don't know . The bullpen game thing seems to be catching on.
  24. You don't want to stockpile too many mediocrities. Can always go with a bullpen game here and there.
  25. Still too early in the hot stove season to come to any conclusions on Sox spending. So far , from last year's champs , we brought back Eovaldi, lost Kelly and probably lose Kimbrel. We did acquire Gorkys Hernandez and Tony Renda . Not exactly household names , but just the sort of depth ( ham and egger ) signings that many fans love. Stay tuned.
