  1. As per the Sox chief medical officer , Dr . Vinnie Boombatz, " Sale should be fine unless that darn shoulder starts acting up again. "
  2. Going the cheap route might not be the best way to defend a championship.
  3. Harm , The beauty of being a Seattle fan is that you don't have these kind of problems. If you have a few good players, just get rid of them and call it " Taking a step back."
  4. Maybe not a good omen for Gorkys' Sox future when he gets his first thread , and most of the responses are debating whether he deserves a thread. Maybe he just needs a cute nickname.
  5. Stay tuned . Things could get interesting . It is going to be tough to have as good a team next season as we had this season . The question is : How close can we come ? The Yankees are going to be improved , maybe significantly improved . We cannot afford to lose too much and still remain on top . I don't think D.D. is looking to clear payroll for the bullpen . Maybe for a major acquisition . Then again , maybe it is all just idle hot stove blather . We will see .
  6. Ottavino looks like he might be a decent addition. However , I wouldn't get too enthusiastic about him being the closer. He is 33 years old , with a career ERA of 3.68 . He has only 17 career saves .
  7. Eovaldi was signed to be in the starting rotation. His use in the bullpen was strictly a post season thing. All hands on deck , etc. Apart from that , the bullpen of today is more important than in the past. With pitch counts and such , starters don't go too deep . A good bullpen is vital to success. Knowing this , the relievers want to be paid accordingly. Having a championship team gets more expensive all the time .
  8. Scott Boras is a convenient and easy target for fans . Curt Flood is a hero to fans and to labor unions. It is all a matter of perspective.
  9. With the current playoff format , it is much more difficult to repeat than it used to be.
  10. Despite all of the gobbledygook about taxes , cliffs and so forth, teams like the Red Sox , Yankees and Dodgers will continue to dominate. MLB is a big money, big market game . The small market, small time Charlies can continue to scrimp , nurture their farm systems, sing the blues , hope for the future and keep begging for handouts and help.
  11. There are not too many pitchers who are willing to go pitch in the minors for an unspecified period just in case you might need them at some point. I don't think Clay Buchholz is one of them . Most of the ones who are willing to do it are rather desperate mediocrities who don't provide much depth besides another rag arm to run out there.
  12. The way I see it John Henry will let Dombrowski know just what the budgetary limitations are . Dombrowski will then endeavor to assemble the best roster possible , looking for quality. They both would love to repeat , but neither is stupid enough to think that we can spend wildly now and then not be able to sign Mookie in the future . I am sure there is a plan in place . Reset notwithstanding , I think we remain competitive for the foreseeable future . Enjoy what we have , don't worry so much about 2021 and beyond.
  13. A lot of cherry picking there. You are not so hung up on recent year numbers ? Well , except for when you are . Pass on Cody Allen.
  14. Some have a strange and undying love for Ben Cherington. They think that if he was still in charge, the team would have had the same success. And the farm would be lush with prospects. Pure speculation . Here is the reality: Ben was the man for four years. One championship and three last place teams . Dombrowski has been at the helm for three years . One championship and an unprecedented three straight A.L. East titles. Spin it any way you want . It doesn't change the reality.
  15. Assuming Kimbrel leaves , my choice would be Britton with Familia next . Cody Allen is coming off a bad year . He is the same age as Kimbrel , with a career ERA a full run higher . In fact , he has never had an ERA in any year as good as Kimbrel's career ERA . He would be a clear downgrade in an important position. Not the way to go.
  16. Not unexpected. If the Yanks have to settle for a guy like Happ , it will probably make them go all in for Machado and/or Harper.
  17. Seems like a lot for a guy who has been pretty mediocre until this year . I guess the starting pitching market is kind of thin.
  18. It's a conundrum. How do you have a championship team and a strong farm system at the same time ? The easiest way to build a strong farm is to have a crappy team. You get the top draft picks every year . Any good players that you may have , you trade for even more prospects. The trouble is , your fans start to lose interest. Attendance is down. Revenue drops. But your farm is well stocked with prospects . Maybe a few of them will actually pan out. But you still won't have a championship team. You will have to be satisfied with a certain modicum of success.
  19. It just keeps getting more expensive. No end in sight. Henry has been a willing spender , but I am sure he has his limits. Even the Yankees and Dodgers have their limits.
  20. The 2018 Red Sox were a really, really good team. You could say they were a great team. Now the objective should be to keep that team together as much as possible. When we do inevitably lose any of them , the goal should be to find a replacement as close as possible in ability to the lost player. Overall , we can expect a slight drop off in 2019 , but try to keep it to a minimum. No doubt the Yankees are going to be improved in 2019 . Of course, all of this depends on John Henry being willing to write the checks.
  21. There are three things you can do with prospects : 1 - You can promote them and fit them into your lineup . 2 - You can trade them for proven talent that you can fit into your lineup. 3 - You can keep them down on the farm , check their stats every day and say , " The future looks bright."
  22. MLB is constantly trying to achieve a semblance of competitive balance . The more you finish on top , the lower your draft picks. The more you spend , the higher the penalty taxes . Maybe the next step will be free beer and hot dogs for anyone buying a ticket to a Rays game. As a long time Sox fan , I just want to see us continue to succeed.
  23. CBS owned the Yankees before Steinbrenner. They had more money than he could dream of. But the team sucked and Yankee Stadium was more than half empty much of the time. You have to have the money and the know how in order to succeed . The Sox have that now . Despite a certain degree of competiveness , Tampa Bay and Oakland are failed franchises right now . I am not trying to be argumentative , I just think that when you have a winning formula, you stick with it. And it will require spending. No doubt about it.
  24. Okay . The thing is , they do have the money. An MLB franchise is worth plenty. People used to complain about the Yankees buying championships . But George Steinbrenner was not the wealthiest owner . Not at all . But he wanted to win. Sometimes you have to spend money to make money . I think John Henry understands this . But to stay on top, he will have to continue to be willing to spend. Some fans want to win without spending. It doesn't work.
  25. I'm not sure either. It seems that you were rebutting my opinion that spending is tied to success. I absolutely think that it is.
