  1. John Henry has been great about spending whatever it takes to win. But there is always limit to it. The problem with having a really great team is that you simply cannot afford to keep them all.
  2. That's the way it is with some of these analytical metric " geniuses " ; they start thinking they know it all. So much smarter than those who actually play the game.
  3. Just to add to that : It is okay for us fans to have our favorites and our not so favorites , but it is not okay for management. A successful management needs to be as objective as humanly possible.
  4. I am pretty confident that Sox management knows what they are doing here. I don't think they will do anything now that negatively impacts their plan for the future.
  5. I seriously doubt that Sox management is that short sighted. They will look at the Kimbrel situation entirely separately from the future considerations. It won't be a matter of one or the other.
  6. Biases of one sort or another are a part of the human condition. When it comes to the Red Sox , fans do have their favorites and their not so favorites. There can be various reasons for it , maybe some are actually subconscious. Who knows ? But it is a reality. Not trying to fault anyone here , just pointing out what seems fairly obvious.
  7. It seems to me that , whatever value you may or may not put on a closer , Craig Kimbrel has never really been a favorite of some posters. Some did not want him here , think we gave up too much to get him and want him gone now. And that's okay. We all want to win and we all have our opinions on how to do it.But here is a fact : Kimbrel is a seven time all star and boasts a career ERA of 1.90 . It is not easy to fill those shoes. Not an opinion, simply a fact. As far as his age is concerned, he is the same age as Chapman. The same age as Joe Kelly . Brazier is a year older. Guys like Adam Ottavino and Andrew Miller are three years older. I can certainly understand not wanting to give Kimbrel a big money , long term contract . Exactly what the team's spending limitations are is really not known to us , but I would agree you don't want to go overboard on a closer. One thing though; you better have somebody who you can reliably count on to close the show.
  8. Margot , Asuaje and Guerra were our future ? Now , three years , three A.L. East titles and one Word Series Championship later , not one of them could even crack our lineup.
  9. Some fans are getting a little carried away. Need to be level headed and sensible here. Kimbrel has a career ERA of 1.90. Assuming he leaves , we need a quality replacement. In five years with the Sox , Barnes' ERA is 4.14 , and Kelly' s is 4.33. More than double the ERA of Kimbrel. Barnes and Kelly were much maligned through most of the season. Now , suddenly , they are the answer ? I think we need to look elsewhere for a more experienced closer with a better track record. Perhaps Britton or Familia. Then , if Barnes and Kelly ( assuming we sign him ) can be consistently effective, we can give them a shot.
  10. I would be very surprised if Mookie did not win the MVP. Very surprised.
  11. I wanted Kelly on the post season roster. I thought he was clearly preferable to the alternatives. As it turned out, he did a terrific job. But as far as making him the closer ; be careful here. In five years with the Sox , he has an overall ERA of 4.33. Last year was 4.39 . Is that the real Joe Kelly , or is the handful of playoff games this year the real Joe Kelly ?
  12. The Gold Glove awards are much like everything else. They are a total farce , maybe even rigged. Except for those times when our guy wins.
  13. To be fair , many of these expensive seats are sold to corporations. They are then often given to executives and clients . Many times they are unused. I guess these corporations are able to write these off as business expenses on their taxes. But the Yankees are getting paid for them. I do agree that it looks bad on television.
  14. No MLB baseball team is ever going to go undefeated, or even remotely close to it. The odds on any baseball game are relatively small . There is a reason for that. And it truly is a game of inches. But the breaks go both ways. A team as dominant , over a long season , as this year's Red Sox is not lucky. It is a matter of ability. They were clearly the best team , and they won it all.
  15. I don't think athletic competition is subject to the same rules of randomness and luck as are games of chance. It is not like flipping a coin or spinning a wheel. It is entirely different. Muhammad Ali would have beaten Buster Mathis 100 times out of 100. No amount of randomness would have helped Buster.
  16. In general, the better athletes will tend to prevail over the lesser ones. In general, the better athletes will make more money than the lesser ones. This is a fact of life , as much as we would like to believe otherwise.
  17. Which one of your kids do you like the best ?
  18. When you lose , the playoffs are a crapshoot. When you win , you don't talk about any crapshoot.
  19. Budgetary restrictions will probably make it difficult, if not impossible, to resign Kimbrel. Also , it is very possible that he is starting to decline in ability. However , he is a seven time all star , with a career ERA of 1.90 . Those kind don't come along every day. We need a quality replacement. Can't try to skimp too much here.
  20. Ian Kinsler is a disgrace to Red Sox Nation. He should not have been allowed to participate in the parade. He should not get a ring. His image should be cropped out of the team photo. He should have been made to pay his own way home from L.A. This will serve as a warning to anyone who even thinks about committing an error at the wrong time in the future.
  21. They are not minor league talent. I am referring to the current farm system.
  22. The Yankees minor league talent was overhyped and overrated. Honestly, when I saw the highly touted Chance Adams pitch , his stuff looked very ordinary. (We have certainly done that with many of our own prospects too. ) I think the Yankee management knew this. That is why they went out and got guys like Happ and Lynn. The idea that their farm system is loaded with hard throwing young pitchers is very misleading. The entire minor leagues are loaded with those kind of guys. Not too many really pan out.
  23. I'm thankful for all of them that contributed to the four championships . Trying to pick an all star team from it , I will leave to others. I will say that David Ortiz is still the post season MVP.
  24. For those who don't get NESN ; the parade is being televised on the MLB channel.
