  1. The worry over an impending cliff is just a lingering symptom of the strange malady known as " Cherington nostalgia ". The afflicted are in denial that they cannot completely recover from this.
  2. FYI , The collector's edition of the Red Sox championship season DVD or BluRay box set will be available on Amazon on Dec. 4 . If you want to spend a little less , the World Series DVD will be out on that date also. They can be pre-ordered now.
  3. The fear of an impending cliff is not being realistic in my view. We can stay on or near the top with a combination of spending , trades , acquisitions and whatever we are able to harvest from the farm. This just further convinces me that many fans are always looking for something bad to happen. The playoff paranoia was very apparent . So is the worry about the future.
  4. It can be a fine line between the two. Our " Reality " can often be influenced by our , sometimes biased , perception.
  5. Despite all of the success in recent years , many Sox fans have never quite gotten over the past disappointments and the whole " Curse of the Bambino " thing. It is deeply ingrained. They are always waiting for the proverbial other shoe to drop. Even this past year , as the post season progressed towards yet another championship, some were constantly freaking out over every misstep. I don't see this changing any time soon. For example; look at the impending " cliff " paranoia.
  6. I would certainly expect the Yankees to do whatever they feel is necessary to overtake the Sox. The addition of Paxton is a good start in that direction. There is no disputing that.
  7. Maybe TalkSox should institute a comeback poster of the year award.
  8. Old Uncle Tom was always a hit at the Thanksgiving table.
  9. Kind of strange to see N.D. in pinstripes. However , they played perhaps their best game of the year ( at least defensively) in Yankee Stadium on Saturday. 11 - 0 . Three more to go.
  10. You know you have a good team when folks have to search hard to find an area of concern. I don't see second base as a real worry.
  11. I don't know if Buchholz would be eager to pitch in AAA if someone offered a better deal.
  12. I think signing Eovaldi would be number one on the " to do list " . Then ( assuming Kimbrel leaves ) would come Kelly. Then Pearce. Then we would still need a closer type. Britton and Familia would top that list , along with possibly Miller. If we can get all that done , we should be in good shape going into spring training.
  13. I think you see more middle infielders and center fielders who provide offense than you used to. Teams have come to expect offense from everywhere except maybe catcher. I just don't think the old " corners " and " up the middle " rule applies as much as before.
  14. I think the idea of expecting certain levels of offense from the different positions has pretty much gone by the boards , except maybe for catcher. It still holds true that for a kid who is not a good hitter, catching is his best chance to make it. Not a lot of kids are anxious to get behind the plate.
  15. There is a lot of competition for the consumer dollar. Advertisers are paying big bucks to buy time on these telecasts. Of course, the cost is passed on to the consumers. The networks , the sponsors , MLB , the owners , the players, the advertising firms , everybody makes out very well. And we pay the tab . Over the years , I have noticed a change in the type of sponsors you see for sports. It used to be beer , cigars , chewing gum, razor blades and such. Now you get new automobiles, vacation and travel destinations, airlines , banks with credit card offers , etc. Much more high end stuff.
  16. We have enjoyed watching some great Red Sox teams in recent years. Now is the time for us to pitch in. If every member of Red Sox Nation would contribute only nineteen dollars a month ( just pennies a day ) , we could enable Sox ownership to keep this team intact for years to come. Please help today.
  17. I thought Cora deserved it . But it is difficult to win the award when you have a very talented team. That seems to be the mindset of the voters . The prefer the overachievers.
  18. The bullpen has to be addressed. We almost certainly lose Kimbrel and possibly Kelly as well. This would pretty much decimate an area that most thought was the weakest link on the team last year. Even if we move away from the traditional closer , and just try to mix and match in the late innings, we still need reliable arms in the pen. You obviously don't have the luxury of using your starters in the bullpen during the regular season. There are a few possibilities out there. Britton, Miller and Familia. But it definitely is an area of concern.
  19. You have to make every effort to keep Mookie. He is that good. However, you still have to put a championship caliber team around him. If you have to pinch pennies elsewhere to be able to afford Mookie, what good is it ? Neither he nor anyone else can carry a mediocre team to a title. This is not the NBA , where one superstar can make all the difference.
  20. Actually, Papi and ARod are good buddies. Another example that the fans take things way more seriously than the players do .
  21. Bill James is still a moneyball devotee. And a bit of a whacko . No doubt that baseball salaries have gotten out of hand . We all know that . We should also know that it is very difficult to maintain a playoff caliber team without being a big spender. And the big spenders are still turning a nice profit. The small market , small time Charlies sing the blues.
  22. I think it's not a bad idea , especially if we don't sign Pearce. And assuming that J.D. is on board with it. If he isn't , then I wouldn't try to force the issue.
  23. Get well soon , man.
  24. Well , certainly no player is worth a ludicrous contract. But there is no consensus on just how much is considered ludicrous. There is a free market out there. People like Bill James don't consider the business side of it. They are just looking at player performance and how it shows up in things like WAR. But they forget that having a winning and exciting team results in much higher attendance, TV ratings , advertising money , concession sales , merchandise revenue, fan interest, public relations and so forth. These things are important. The perennial low budget teams lose out on all of this. They become reduced to being pretty much welfare cases. Wards of MLB. Content to lose , rebuild , lose , look at the empty seats and take the revenue sharing and luxury tax money. The kicker is that their owners are every bit as wealthy as the others.
  25. It is easy to say that now. The Sox were able to pull away down the stretch and win the division with something to spare. But it was a close race with the Yankees most of the season. Kimbrel had 42 saves , while most of the bullpen had their ups and downs. I do agree that giving Kimbrel a huge 5 year contract would not be smart. But thinking you can win with just any jabroni closing games is not smart either.
