  1. " Sort of compete ? " Is that the goal ? The Sox having a higher payroll is precisely my point. Fenway is packed every night . The team is a near dynasty . The A's and Rays play in nearly empty stadiums. The owners are all wealthy. Which do you want ? A championship caliber team or a perennial underdog who tries to " sort of compete ? "
  2. As always, we can have our opinions. We can dig up stats to support them. Just have to see how it plays out. Personally, I think the Mets will make the post season before the Mariners. Not that I care.
  3. Yeah . Then we can win fairly and squarely. We will be the good guys. The babyfaces.
  4. We are getting a little silly when we decide that Mookie may be worth eight years , but certainly not ten . Please .
  5. The Twins have been the big money Yankees favorite post season patsies . Oakland has won nothing since the pre Billy Beane glory days . The Rays have one pennant and zero rings in their existence. Oakland and Tampa Bay have lost most of their fan support. They probably need to relocate. Are these the models for success ? Is this what you want for the Red Sox ?
  6. Teams like that can compete, at least to a certain extent , in any given year , especially with the wild card situation. Point is , they cannot do it consistently.
  7. Like it or don't like it , it is expensive ( and always getting more expensive ) to maintain a championship caliber team year after year . The top players get paid top dollar . Arbitration raises are costly . Free agents want big bucks and the security of long contracts . You can say no to all of them if you want . But it is very difficult for any team to stay on top by depending on the farm. The teams with the best players are the teams that win. Year in and year out , the top teams are usually the big spenders . You don't have to like it , but it is a fact of baseball life.
  8. There are a number of possible Kimbrel replacements out there . I would put Britton and Familia at the top of my list.
  9. Cano is one of those guys who has become fair game for abuse , partially due to his seemingly indifferent attitude, partially due to his bloated contract , but mostly due to P.E.D. use. However , he is a career. .300 hitter with home run pop. Keep that in mind before ridiculing the Mets for this deal.
  10. Robertson could be a useful piece in the bullpen. But I wouldn't put too much faith in him. He is showing some signs of being past his prime. He is three years older than Kimbrel, with a career ERA almost a full run higher. Obviously , he will come cheaper .
  11. Some of these jerks just have an anti Notre Dame bias , and it shows. The undefeated Fighting Irish deserve to be in the playoffs. The fourth and final spot comes down to the Buckeyes and the Sooners . Oklahoma will get it , but you could make a case for Ohio State. Eventually, the playoffs will expand to six or eight teams.
  12. That is the state of the game today. Expensive. Risky. I liked the acquisition of Eovaldi from the start. Watching him pitch, one could see the potential. There is a big difference between doing nothing and giving him a big contract. We can hope that he takes less from the Sox because of " all the love " that he received. Then call Houston stupid when they top our offer. Then sign some mediocre journeyman to fill out the rotation. If Eovaldi bombs in Houston, we can gloat. If things don't work out for us , we can always take solace in the fact that we saved money. And that's okay. The best way to avoid making any mistakes is to not take any chances. Play it safe .
  13. Every signing comes with some risk , especially with pitchers . But you have to do something . The Yankees have added Paxton and figure to also add Corbin , Machado and possibly Miller . That is a significant improvement . If we lose Kimbrel , Eovaldi and Kelly without getting quality replacements , we are going to have trouble staying on top of the division. We can always find a reason to question every possible deal , but it would be a mistake to do nothing . To expect that replacing Eovaldi with Velazquez or Johnson would work is foolhardy.
  14. How does it have nothing to do with anything? Some posters wanted Diaz . The Mets apparently are getting him . But they are stupid? Dumping Cano was always coupled with a Diaz trade. Personally , I don't want Cano . But he can still hit . The Mets need a closer and some more offense . If Seattle is picking up a good part of his contract and the Mets are unloading a couple of bad contracts, it could work out for them. Why not wait until we see how the Mets do this year before deciding they were fleeced ?
  15. I think we may be rushing to judgement here . The Mets are trying to win now . They have a top notch rotation . They needed a closer and more offense . Let's wait and see which prospects they are trading . Let's wait and see how much of Cano's contract Seattle is eating . A couple of days ago , many on here wanted Edwin Diaz . Now , we are ridiculing the Mets for this deal.
  16. I don't necessarily disagree with that . But as to this year's bullpen , I think we need a couple of quality arms to replace Kimbrel and Kelly. If we can find a somewhat obscure gem like Brasier , fine.
  17. No , I don't. What I like about Dombrowski is that he goes for quality. Some fans seem to prefer collecting a number of mediocrities hoping to find that elusive diamond in the rough. Let's not pin our hopes on guys like Maddox , Poyner , Workman , etc.
  18. Can never have too much pitching depth, as they say. However , it is difficult to substitute quantity for quality if you want to succeed at a high level. Hoping to get lucky is usually not a good strategy.
  19. Boras has always been a convenient target . However , he is doing very well , his clients seem to be satisfied and the owners pretty much have to deal with him. So , I don't think the fans displeasure bothers him at all.
  20. We are going to have to improve on that lineup.
  21. You pay Mookie whatever it takes to keep him . As long as you have enough left over to put a contender along with him. It is stupid to have the Mona Lisa while living in a run down house.
  22. Wrong. These guys are professional athletes. Baseball is a big business. They sign with Boras because they think he will help them maximize their earnings . No reason to lose respect for them because of that.
  23. I doubt that we lose all three of Kimbrel , Eovaldi and Kelly. But if we do , we are going to need some capable replacements. No matter how you look at it , it comes down to making good decisions and just how much John Henry is willing to spend. We will find out before long.
  24. Harm , it looks like after an existence of 42 years , without a single pennant to wave , the Mariners are looking to break it down and start from scratch. Hang in there.
  25. The difference this year is that we will most likely not be making any major acquisitions. It will be more about trying to maintain the current status as much as possible. We should wind up with a very good roster, although maybe not as good as this year's. If the Yankees and Houston improve themselves, things could get interesting.
