  1. Ryan was probably the most dominant pitcher of all time. Not necessarily the best , but the most dominant . His strikeout , no hitters , one hitters and two hitters totals are phenomenal.
  2. Anything that gets people talking about baseball is probably good . When the hot stove league talk is dominated by the business / financial side of the game it does little or nothing to promote interest in the sport. ( Granted , some fans do enjoy discussing and analyzing the finances . ).
  3. Yep . I'm going to go check and see what Steamer has to say .
  4. Nate Eovaldi was an excellent acquisition last season . I was happy to see us get him for a somewhat mediocre prospect. And he did a great job for us . But let's not go overboard. Some of the people who are counting on him are the same ones who usually preach against small sample sizes . Eovaldi is 29 . Seven years in MLB . Five teams . Two Tommy Johns . 44 - 53 with a career ERA of 4.16 . He is not Tom Seaver .
  5. The luxury tax discourages the few teams that might be willing to spend from spending more . But many owners do not want to spend. They have " wised up " to the fact that they can make a nice profit without spending to put a good team on the field. And it will lead to labor problems.
  6. The owners could not get a salary cap . But they did slip a few things past the player's union . The luxury tax and some of the other restrictions serve as sort of a de facto salary cap . They discourage spending . And some owners just don't seem interested in spending to put a contender on the field for their fans . I think the players are getting more and more disgruntled with the way things are going . The next labor negotiation will not be easy . I think a strike would be very damaging to all . But it could happen .
  7. I meant other , cheaper options for closer or just late inning relief . For example : The Yankees signed Ottavino for three years at 9 mil per . The Mets signed Familia for three years at 10 mil per .
  8. Nick , Were there only two choices here ? 80 million or nothing at all ? No other options?
  9. I don't think our bullpen last year was all that bad . We don't win 108 games if it was . I do like the Yankee's approach to building a strong pen . It is very important in today's game . They did win 100 games last year despite some serious issues with their starters .
  10. His career ERA is 3.87 . Consistency has been his problem. He seemed to figure things out toward the end . I have never been as high on Kelly as some have , or as low . I see him as a useful part of the bullpen .
  11. The good stuff , or the more economical store brand ?
  12. The bullpen probably has to cover three or four innings . We have gone from Kimbrel , Kelly , Barnes and Brasier to ( most likely ) Barnes , Brasier , Hembree and Thornburg .Basically , we are replacing Kimbrel and Kelly with Hembree and Thornburg . And sometimes we will be replacing Hembree with someone else . Is that a dropoff ? You decide .
  13. There is a classic case in the NBA , where the Knicks are tanking like crazy . But in the NBA it makes more sense . Just one or two top free agents and a top draft pick and you are right back in business . Not that easy in baseball .
  14. Absolutely . You don't want to be making panic deals if you find yourself trailing the Yankees by seven games in July . I'm trying to understand all of this , but it sure seems like an odd way for a championship team to be doing business .
  15. I'm okay with it too . Keeps things interesting.
  16. Maybe not the smartest troll on the Internet. He needs to go to troll graduate school.
  17. If the plan for Pearce is to primarily play first base against left handed pitching, it seems like an odd choice of priorities.
  18. No limit , but be prudent is pretty vague . D. D. has passed on just about every quality reliever out there . Some with seemingly reasonable and prudent deals . People gripe about trading prospects. Well , it would take pretty good prospects to acquire a better reliever than what he has already passed up . I guess I'm missing something.
  19. For the umpteenth time ; It is not just Kimbrel. D.D. has passed on Britton , Ottavino , Familia , Miller and just about everyone else between the levels of Robertson and Ellington . It is pretty clear to me that he has been limited in what he is allowed to spend. Nothing else really makes sense .
  20. Absolutely. Ultimately, it is John Henry's call . Which is only right . It is his money .
  21. I don't see that . It is the G.M. s job to put a winner on the field , within the budget constraints of the owner . It is not his job to manage the owner's checkbook. If he has no spending limit , why would he impose one on himself ? I am pretty sure that John Henry has the final say here . As well he should.
  22. I think if John Henry gave D.D. the green light to spend what it takes to win another title , D.D. would surely do it . Why wouldn't he ?
  23. Everyone wants a bigger slice of the pizza . It' s like that with most things in life . Baseball is no exception.
