  1. I'd like to have a buck for every boxer and football player who hung around too long and paid the price for it . Smart move by Luck . You only live once .
  2. I am talking about the reason we are trailing the Yankees . I had said the disparity in the bullpens would be a problem for us this season . Their pen looked a lot better . I think that has played out just as I feared it would . Their starters have struggled just as much as ours . Our offense is as good or better . The only difference , in my opinion , is the bullpens . But I am not going to convince anyone . So be it . We have hit a dead end . Nothing more to say .
  3. I get the picture . I warned about the bullpen disparity way back in the off season . And how it could effect our ability to again win the division . There were those who said " no problem " . " The pen will be fine . D.D. did everything right . " Okay . You are right . I give up . The Yankees are beating us , but it's not because of the bullpens . Whatever .
  4. The Yankee's starting pitching has been good ?
  5. There a million stats . You can use them to " prove " almost anything . I am not going to delve into it , but it seems to me that the Yankee' s bullpen stats are influenced by their mop up guys woes . Their top guys have been very good . But there is a bottom line . The Yankees are on top . Why is that ? If not the bullpen , then what is it ? Give me another reason . Why are they on top ? Huh ?
  6. The rotation troubles notwithstanding ; a strong bullpen is a requisite . The Yankee rotation is a mess . The Rays' is injury riddled .
  7. Nothing except the standings . And that matters .
  8. Their bullpen is better and deeper than it was last year . Ours is not . ( I think ours is starting to improve lately ) The bullpen is the only area where they are noticeably better than us . To me , that is very obvious.
  9. We were already treading water at the deadline. The bullpen should have been addressed much earlier.
  10. I liked the strategy of pitching around Machado . Hosmer is a pretty good hitter , but you can't let Machado beat you . It worked to perfection twice late in the game . Smart move .
  11. Too much analysis, in my view . Like many problems, the solution is pretty simple.
  12. I will get right on that . Those are attractive odds for catching two teams who are not as good or as experienced in pennant race baseball. And , as we all know , anything can happen in the post season . Well worth a bet . But not with " Needlenose ".
  13. The A's have played three fewer games . I don't much care what the fangraphs geeks say . My local wise guy , Paul " Needlenose " Minagge says , " I'm not giving odds on the Red Sox . They have the talent and experience to get it done ." Much like me , old " Needlenose " has a pretty good track record on these things.
  14. I know how I would deal with that situation. And it wouldn't be by yelling , " Ha ha , your kid is a little wimp and your wife is fat and ugly . " When I finished with that , I would consider cleaning the garage . In my view , the Yankee fans on here like to break balls , but they are not obnoxious. It actually adds something to the discussions. That's about all I have to say on this . If trading insults makes some feel better , fine . Go for it . My question is still; why are we so far behind the Yankees ? And what can be done to change it ?
  15. Opting out is too much of a risk . I think he stays .
  16. Yeah . Should have stalled for time by saying , " What is the definition " and " Can you use that in a sentence ." That stuff is killing spelling bees . They need a pitch clock .
  17. When you have the most expensive house on the block , you really should have set aside some money for the dining room . Even the best house can be hurt by cheap furniture .
  18. Enjoy it . Should be a nice night and a good game .
  19. Yeah , I get that . But when you lose a spelling bee , then yell at the winner " You suck at spelling " , it comes across as kind of lame . At least to me . Anyway , for those who feel better by doing that , go for it . No problem .
  20. Not ready to give up on the Red Sox . But if they don't make it , I will pull for the underdog Rays. They don't match up well on paper with the top teams , but Kevin Cash does a great job with them . In the N.L. , I always root for the Cubs . In any event , I will be interested . Never in the apathetic category . Not that I blame those who are . It's all good .
  21. On August 23 , the burning question on everyone's mind is ; " Who goes ? Curletta, Smith and Weber " ? Who would have imagined that back in April ?
  22. Cleveland has a cheap owner and lousy fans . A decent enough team , but they would not even be in the picture if they played in any other division in baseball .
  23. I do think there is still plenty of it in use . And they are always looking for something that won't be detected . One guy I am a little worried about is Vazquez .
  24. The Guardians just got swept by the surging Mets. They are now trailing the A's and Rays by percentage points . The only thing they have going for them right now is playing in the weakest division in MLB. And the much maligned Mets can be a dangerous team if they can make it into the post season . If they can turn it around , why not us ?
  25. Okay , but it's not blind optimism. It would be stupid to say that we can still win the division. We cannot. But given the talent level on this Sox team compared with the talent level of the A's and Rays , catching them is not at all out of the question. It won't be easy , but it is still too soon to throw in the towel.
