  1. The best scenario would be to be in the N.L. standings , but still play many games against the Blue Jays , Orioles , Tigers , Royals and White Sox . Unfortunately, the N.L. does not have all these weak links to beat up on .
  2. Even worse than I thought.
  3. Porcello , Price , Sale and so many other pitchers have problems when the velocity starts to dip . Kind of like life itself .
  4. I blame Harold and Ferdy , the Nerdwell brothers . They need to go . Get back to good , old fashioned hardball .
  5. At the ballpark, you see so many fans wearing player's jerseys . And the expensive ones , not the tee shirts. Very lucrative business.
  6. Obviously, some owners are better / worse than others . The revenue sharing rewards the cheapest of the cheap. They continue to make money even though the fans are disgusted with the product and the park is almost empty .
  7. Scapegoat time is here . It never stops . Even when we win it all .
  8. No doubt the profits are enormous. The owners are doing very well . They can afford it .
  9. There has been a lot said about how bad the pitching has been , while the offense has done very well . And rightly so. But one thing that has been missing is the failure of the offense to rally late and pull games out . I don't know what the numbers are , but our record when trailing after six or seven innings must be terrible.
  10. I think the owners and G.M. s know that these big contracts are for too much money , too many years and will cause problems sooner or later . But if you don't do it , you don't get the top players .
  11. I was thinking more in terms of American Pharoah or Secretariat .
  12. Just have to put all that aside . Find a way to score more runs than the opponent and keep winning.
  13. Now we have a Gorky and a Porky ?
  14. Labor Day marks the traditional start of the stretch drive . In horse racing parlance, this is when they round the final turn and head for home . This is when the horse with the championship pedigree, the championship heart comes roaring up on the outside to overtake the front runners and beat them to the wire .
  15. Lemahieu is a former batting champ , so he is a legit hitter . As with so many things we are seeing this year , the juiced ball is surely a factor.
  16. It's generally not recommended to put the tying run on . But in this case , I think the idea was don't let Trout beat you . It worked.
  17. Still time to get on board . The train hasn't left the station yet . Saving a seat for you .
  18. I could be wrong , but I think it's actually a good thing that there are three teams we are chasing . We just have to catch any two of them , not any particular two .
  19. I didn't say he was a good starter . I think you are entirely missing my point . And I do think I know a little about baseball . No need to act like a jerk.
  20. Right . The Carr and Dantley games were the only ones UCLA lost over that entire span . Well over 100 games . Go Irish. Beat Louisville.
  21. Jeffress is kind of in the same category as Chacin . A guy who has been good , but for whatever reason went sour this year . Probably worth a shot to sign him . Not much to lose .
  22. Are you saying that Johnson is no good as a starter , but it's okay for him to start the third inning and pitch through the sixth inning , facing the entire Angel's lineup in that time ? Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see the difference there .
  23. I didn't go to Notre Dame , but have always been a big fan of the Fightin' Irish . Notre Dame ended UCLA 's remarkable 88 game winning streak in 1974 . The team consisted of Adrian Dantley , John Shumate , Gary Brokaw , Billy Paterno , Dwight Clay and others . Clay hit the winning shot that sunk Bill Walton and company . I believe Austin Carr was before that. He also was a part of some memorable games . As for this year's football team ; the game at Georgia in week three will be the acid test . Georgia is ranked number three in the country , and trying to go down there and win a game " between the hedges " is a daunting task indeed .
  24. The Rays won again today , but the A's and Guardians both lost . We are now five behind both in the all important loss column. Definitely enough time to make that up . The Guardians have lost Ramirez and Naquin for the year . The A' s have ridden their closer , Hendricks , way too hard . He is wearing down . This is very doable. By the way , all the Yankee fans that I know ( and I know quite a few ) fear the Red Sox far more than they do the other three contenders .
