  1. It was a good baseball weekend. Quite a few interesting games . Looking forward to the first Sox vs Yanks series coming soon.
  2. Sunday morning in Philly : Alex Cora sits at his desk making out his lineup card. Without knocking, in walks young Red Sox analytics whiz , Harold Nerdwell. Cora ( sounding annoyed ) : " What is it Harold ?" Harold: " Alex , My brother Ferdie and I want you to rest J.D. and Bogie today. Our studies show that guys produce better when they get more rest ." Cora: " Are you nuts? We need this game to stay in first. And we are off tomorrow." Harold : " All the better. Two days off are better than one. We cleared this with Mr. Werner. He agrees. " ( Drops printout on Cora's desk. ) Cora : " Okay. Anything else , Harold?" Harold: " No. That's it for now. Have a nice day , Alex." Cora , staring at ceiling, " My head hurts. "
  3. The ChiSox are the best team in the weakest division. Not the best team in the league.
  4. Toronto needs a good closer if they want to hang in there all season. Right now , that looks to be their biggest problem.
  5. Duran's pending arrival is probably the most anticipated since Mookie.
  6. Benintendi is playing well. I , for one, am glad to see it. He was a part of the 2018 super team , and I will always have good memories of that. I don't see his success as a knock on Bloom. Would like to see JBJ get hot as well.
  7. To fully evaluate pitchers , we need more alphabet soup stats. Why stop with FIP and WHIP ? How about ZIP , SKIP , FLIP and DIP ?
  8. Kind of a dumb rule, if you think about it. If you strike out , you should be out. Why should you reach base if the ball gets past the catcher ?
  9. At this point in the season, I think it's fair to say that the Yanks are not as good as many thought they were. And the Red Sox are better than many thought they were. Whether the Sox can stay on top all year remains to be seen. Looking forward to the head to head games. They should tell us a lot. Meanwhile, the Jays and the Rays are not going away either.
  10. As that great American , Gomer Pyle, USMC would say , " Surprise - surprise."
  11. I am as diehard as anyone . But some do get a little carried away. After Barnes gave up a bloop single to Trout and a Pesky pole shot to Ohtani ( two pretty fair hitters , by the way ) , one guy called it " a massive choke job. "
  12. Jordan Montgomery is another one of those guys who has somehow become overrated. Truth is , he is not that good. He is just another mediocre pitcher . There are many like that.
  13. Baseball can indeed be quirky , but it is a bastion of rationality when compared to the quirkiness of some fans/posters .
  14. Patience is in short supply around here. But it doesn't take much to turn people's opinions around. On TalkSox , players are reevaluated after every game. Sometimes after every at bat.
  15. I like seeing Chavis and Dalbec in the lineup. And as soon as possible, Duran. An infusion of youthful energy and enthusiasm makes things more interesting and exciting to watch. The home run power is there as well.
  16. ERod is a good pitcher. He is not a great one. He has been the beneficiary of some really good run support. " Ace " is a subjective term , but ERod would generally be rated a bit below that status.
  17. The feeling is that the Sox have gotten off to a great start. And the feeling is that the Yankees have floundered. However, a check of the standings shows the Sox are only one game up in the loss column. The head to head competition, when they finally do meet , will probably tell the story of our chances for the division.
  18. When a machine is running so smoothly that it is close to perfection, it is not a good idea to start removing parts to see how many you can do without before the machine sputters to a stop. It's a temptation that should be resisted.
  19. Kind of strange that we have played the Orioles ten times and have yet to play the Yankees. Did MLB set the schedule to build the rivalry until more fans are allowed in the park ? Was that the thinking when they made the schedule or is it just coincidence?
  20. Message board forums seem to attract a different breed of fan. More analytical and deep thinking. The boys down at Clancy's never talk about UZR , Babip or peripherals. But they are good fans nevertheless.
  21. Many fans love to play G.M. The players are just expendable chess pieces. When the GM makes a move , it is immediately evaluated. The funny thing is that they rarely change their opinion, even when the results indicate they were wrong. They can always fall back on countering with something like , " The young prospect, Freddy Farge , might still turn out to be a good ballplayer."
  22. The Yankees are facing future Hall of Famer , Max Scherzer. The Sox are facing a guy that I have never heard of . Chances of a Sox win and a Yankee loss are pretty darn good.
  23. It's worth a shot. The Cubs might have been a little hasty in giving up on him.
  24. Trade anybody with any value for young prospects. Then trade those prospects for even younger prospects. Let's shoot for the moon in 2030.
  25. One caveat to the early season success: The schedule so far has been softer than Cottonelle. That will change before long.
