  1. Throw jabronis against the bullpen wall and see if one sticks as closer. Great plan.
  2. Personally , I think Whitlock should be closing unless and until Barnes gets straightened out. There are those who think the closer role is not vitally important. That's a matter of opinion also. To me , nothing is more deflating than blowing a game that appeared to be won.
  3. The owners would like that. It's cheaper.
  4. Simply put , they should not be having this kind of trouble against teams like the Rangers and Twins. And they should not be holding auditions for closer at this point in the season. Whose fault it is is strictly a matter of opinion.
  5. Generally , a closer will start the ninth with the bases empty . This is the most normal way a closer is used . On the relatively few times they are called on in the eighth , the tying runs may already be in scoring position. That's the way it goes . Sometimes they get a blown save that is mostly not their fault. Sometimes they get an easy save in the ninth. When they have a long career , all of that should even out. Career stats are pretty legit . Hard to be that lucky or unlucky for a career.
  6. Sometimes we make things too complicated. Mariano is clearly the king of closers. Papelbon probably belongs somewhere in the top ten all time. Don't need a thousand different stats to figure that .
  7. Papelbon doesn't get enough credit. He was excellent for quite a while.
  8. I don't sweat the Jays. They have some hitters who can beat you up. But a lousy bullpen. And they play very poor fundamental baseball. They will beat themselves. The A's always come up short in the Money Ball era. Good team , but not good enough. It's been like that since the bash brothers were done . And the old Charley Finley bunch. Just not the same any more. The Sox have a clear path to a wild card.
  9. Any jabroni might close out a game here and there . But there have been very few who have done it at a high level for any length of time. We should not push our luck too much here. Try to get Barnes straightened out. For now , Whitlock looks like the most reliable. The best and safest option. Don't start grasping at straws.
  10. Robles has been in MLB for seven years and has an ERA over 4. So, better get the clean sheets ready.
  11. As soon as the Yankees lose a game , we will hear " See, there is no momentum."
  12. The contrarian.
  13. The best thing you can do now is to try and get Barnes straightened out. Keep him down a few days and let the pitching coach work with him and earn his keep. If a save situation happens in the meantime , Whitlock clearly has the best stuff to get the job done. As I have said ad nauseum, Closin' ain't easy!!!!
  14. In general, high quality items are more expensive. And sometimes they break. This includes baseball players. A lot of folks have a money ball and fantasy league obsession with building a champion for less money. And that's fine. But MLB is a big business , a part of the huge entertainment industry , not rotisserie baseball. And they charge the fans top dollar. The owners love to save money , and of course, we don't ever get to see the books.
  15. The Red Sox are obviously still one of the bigger spenders in MLB. It is also obvious that they have reigned in their spending somewhat since winning it all in 2018. And like it or not , it shows on the field.
  16. It could be that the Twins are psyched out . I don't know. When there is no logical explanation for something it is always good to fall back on Yankee announcer John Sterling's quote , " That's baseball , Susyn."
  17. It's not often that you see a total breakdown in every aspect of baseball like the Sox displayed last night. It was almost as if the two teams switched uniforms before the game .
  18. The boys played like they had been out drinking all Friday night .
  19. Rangers going with another stiff tonight. Lyles is 5-10 with a 5.55 ERA. Jump right on him in the first and take charge of this game. No excuse not to sweep this sorry bunch. They are no better than the Orioles.
  20. The Cardinals are now just two games out of a wild card. That could just as easily have been the Cubs had they added a couple of pieces instead of selling off every key player at the deadline. Cheap owner. Cubs fans deserved better.
  21. That is strictly wishful thinking on your part. This may not be the 2018 Red Sox , but they are fully capable of making the playoffs. And as we know , in the playoffs anything can happen. I think you are more worried than you let on.
  22. For whatever reason , momentum can end or shift at any time. It doesn't last forever.. But that doesn't mean that it didn't exist.
  23. I don't blame them either. I just get a chuckle out of the overreaction . Unless you have a powerhouse team , many of the ups and downs of a season are schedule related and pretty predictable. And looking at our schedule , I do see the playoffs in clear view. But the next game we lose , you can be sure will reignite the weeping and wailing around these parts.
  24. I wasn't referring to you. Don't take things so personally . And I do think it is funny.
