    A fire sale is unthinkable for a franchise like the Red Sox. I can't believe it is even being discussed . The whole idea is revolting.

    Bogaerts got the error , but a good first baseman scoops that throw , or at least knocks it down and keeps the run from scoring. Franchy could not do that. He fell on his butt. The (eventual winning ) run scored.

    Baseball is a team sport . You are just citing different ways that the team can lose. It doesn't change the fact that , when you do have a late lead , you need to close it out for the win. The good closers do that at a high percentage success rate. And the way to build a good bullpen starts with the closer.

    This is wishful thinking on your part . In your heart , you still fear the Sox this post season.

    The Mets are a good case in point. They spent big and turned a rather mediocre team into a developing powerhouse in short order.

    That is a classic case of cherry picking an example to disprove an obvious truth. You are getting pretty good at it.

    I understand the debate over Whitlock's role. As a starter , he may only pitch five innings every five or so days in games that could be blowouts. As the closer , he would be available to close out the win in several tight games. Which would be more valuable at this time? However , the Sox obviously see Whitlock as a key part of the rotation going forward. And they do have Houck as an alternative to close. Hard to understand why they haven't done that. By the way , I still feel that Sale would would be a great choice to close. I think that could give the whole bullpen a major boost.

    That's right . The Sox have one of the big payrolls. And they have been successful. It's only in the last three or four years that we hear all the talk that they can't afford this guy or that guy. A lot of fans have still not gotten over losing Mookie.

    The best players are very expensive to sign and to keep. And it gets more expensive all the time. And there is a pretty good chance that , sooner or later , the player will not be worth it. But this is the big freakin' leagues. If you want to play big time baseball , you should be willing to pay . Planning to replace expensive talent like Betts and Devers by building the farm is a longshot at best.

    Trading for a closer won't be easy. Most of the top guys are on contending teams and unlikely to be dealt. I do think Houck is worth a try. And I definitely would strongly consider Sale when he is ready. What will be interesting is what will happen when Josh Hader enters free agency after next season . He is probably the best closer in the game right now , and his price will surely be high.

    Margot is off to a hot start , but his career numbers show him as nothing more than an okay ballplayer . I don't see him starting over any of our former " Killer B " outfielders.

    Some fans thought this trade was an overpay . Some actually still do . To me , it was one of the Sox best deals in recent years. We got much the better of it .

    The thing with baseball is : It's a long grind. Injuries happen . And they will upset even the best laid plans.

    Cora has been trying to mix and match with his bullpen all season. It's very hit or miss with this group.

    There is a need to spend for the top talent . Depending on the farm system to keep you competive with the big spenders will only get you so far. Sustainable also rans.

    Apparently , " piggybacking " is the latest fad . I guess it is an offshoot of " openers " , third time through the order phobia and bullpen games. It is hard for me to keep up with all this stuff. I'm too old for this.

    A good bullpen should start with a top notch closer . The closer is the linchpin , the mainstay. You build the pen around that. The Sox have been lacking this . I would suggest using Sale in the closer's role when he returns. In the meantime , try Houck or Whitlock . And try to slot the other relievers into a more predictable and steady role . Right now , you never know who is going to enter the game and when are they coming in.

    Josh Bell would be a major acquisition. He could do a lot of damage in the Sox lineup. I would definitely go for it.

    APPLE+ . How many things are we supposed to subscribe to ? MLB , like so many other entities , is always looking to rip off their customers . A pox on them all.

    After the terrible start they had , most fans would have been more than happy to reach .500 by Memorial Day. Now , that looks like a certainty. Be happy.

    The question is , are the Sox willing to get in a bidding war with teams like the Dodgers , Mets or maybe even the Yanks to sign Devers ? There has not been any indication that they are. It is a fact that the teams that spend big to obtain the best players are the teams that win. ( I do know that there are exceptions to this so please don't point that out to me. ) One other thing , the ever expanding playoff format certainly gives an opportunity for a less talented team to get hot or just lucky in the post season.

    I have heard that Josh Donaldson had a rough childhood. Very abusive father. Not using that as an excuse for bad behavior , but it might help explain why he doesn't play well with others.

    There are a lot of ebbs and flows in a baseball season . It's not all seashells and balloons.
