  1. I don't like wild cards in general, but I can see having one. It evens out the playoff format when you have three divisions and gives a chance to a team that was the runnerup in a tough division. But I think it has gone too far and it cheapens the regular season.
  2. The Manfred man does not count as an earned run, but it is counted as a blown save or a loss. I guess they could change that if they cared to , but it probably doesn't happen often enough to make much difference. That said , I despise the Manfred man rule. I also despise having three wild cards. It is conceivable that a team could finish fourth in a five team division and still get another shot to get hot in the post season. A cheap , money grabbing gimmick. Unfortunately, my despising these things does not matter. And so it goes.
  3. We will have to add Wacha to your list of guys the Sox should unload.
  4. Much like wallpaper, Manny's hitting covered a multitude of sins.
  5. Conforto is injured and may be out for the year. Cano has a history of being a good hitter . I think he would be worth a shot if you don't mind his history of cheating. There is really nothing to lose. And possibly a lot to gain.
  6. I'm not sure if they charge blown saves before the seventh inning. But there are certainly some quirks in the " blown save" stat for sure. Nevertheless, when you have more blown saves than you have saves , it's not too good.
  7. I am sure you will sleep better if the Sox deal away all of the talent.
  8. If you think the offense is bad now , let J.D. opt out and let Xander and Devers walk , or trade them both. And what is left?
  9. This bullpen is kind of a mish - mash. Cora is always trying to mix and match and get the best out of them. And he is actually pretty good at it. But this is really not a good plan if you want to win a championship. To begin with , you really should have a first rate closer . ( I thought they should have gone after Iglesias in the off season). Now , whether it is Whitlock, Houck or Robles , you should have someone in that role. Then you need to define the roles of the set up men. Stick with it and don't yank them every time they get in a jam. I think they will all benefit from knowing their roles and when they are likely to be called upon.
  10. In 1986 , Schiraldi was in for the save and the championship. He got two outs then gave up three straight singles . All were hit over the infielders , but short of the outfielders. Had they been hit harder , they may well have been easy outs. If Buckner makes that play , the game is still tied and would have continued. The Sox may or may not have won. In 2004 , if Dave Roberts is picked off or thrown out stealing ( almost happened ) , the Sox would have been swept in four by the Yankees. A lot of close calls , near misses and what ifs . That's baseball.
  11. Alphabet soup is an acquired taste.
  12. If JBJ continues to struggle, it could be time to give Duran a real shot at the job. He seems like a player who could really provide a spark to this team.
  13. MLB teams must have data that shows that players are more productive and less likely to get injured when they get occasional days off. It seems that all teams do it now , so that is why I think it is front office policy and not the individual manager's decision. We don't have to like it , but that's how it is.
  14. If he is going to be a starter he will have to do that sooner or later. Being the closer would limit his innings a lot , but do nothing to help him develop as a starter. He does seem to have too much ability to be stuck in middle relief. I guess they have a plan , but it just doesn't seem clear at this point.
  15. It is my opinion that today's managers are being unduly influenced by the unseen Ferdie Nerdwells in the front offices.
  16. I think every pitcher would like to know their role on the staff. Whitlock is probably no exception. The Sox still seem undecided on it.
  17. Everything seems kind of helter skelter right now. They need to get guys settled into their defined roles.
  18. In all fairness, the Rizzo signing is looking really good.
  19. Like I said , it's possible.
  20. That is great if you can do it. It's possible, but not too easy. The Josh Haders are usually going to cost more than the Diekmans. There is a reason for that.
  21. So we took a third string catcher instead.
  22. Koji had been kind of a well kept secret. He always had the stuff to be top of the line. Anyway , he certainly was that in 2013. That is my whole point , the championship seasons all had a top of the line closer .
  23. Checked with Sox chief medical officer, Dr. Vinnie Boombatz, on Graterol's outlook. He said he would get back to us on that sometime.
  24. Foulke and Papelbon were first rate closers. Koji was definitely top of the line in 2013. One of the top performances ever. In 2018 , Kimbrel was 5-1 with 42 saves . A 2.7 ERA . An All Star selection. He struggled mightily in the post season , but still managed to save six of the eleven wins , without actually blowing a save. There have been some memorable blown saves in post season history , but not in those four championship seasons.
