  1. Other than Houck and Dalbec, you don't have any prospects listed. I believe Bloom is considering at least a few as joining the team this year and becoming part of our roster for 2022. If he is thinking that way, it likely would effect how many moves he wants to make before ST. I have been high on Duran for some time and Downs will probably be on the roster before the year is out along with Mata. Why bring in players to block them now?
  2. Really, if we don't make the playoffs but win a few more games by going over the CBT first level, is it worth it. I would say no. Leave the spending until we are positioned to make a run.
  3. I hope so too but seriously doubt it.
  4. You could be right about that. Maybe the plan is to play this year and begin to integrate players from the minors as a way to rebuilt the team for 2022. We have Downs, Casas and Duran in the wings and any number of pitchers. If we then can bring in a few top FA's, 2022 could be a year we are back in contention.
  5. I'm in the camp that believes that contract demands of 10 years at $300 mil is already very high when considering the risk of injury or a downturn in performance. Going 12 years for $365 is even a higher risk. Based on the CBT, that kind of contract hampers putting the rest of a competitive roster on the field. What the Dodgers did will have to be looked at after the contract continues for a few years. Mookie helped them win a WS but he did that along with other outstanding players. There is no way the Sox were going anywhere last season with him. Better to get value and start to rebuild the farm and the team.
  6. With a million a day being vaccinated, that's roughly 30 million more people vaccinated per month. By April 1 there could be 70 million and a delay to May would see 100 million unless the vaccination rate rate picks up, which is likely. Not enough for herd immunity but with precautions, a significant number, particularly those of us who are older. My wife and I were finally able to get our first this morning so there is light at the end of this pandemic tunnel.
  7. I don't see us having a legitimate chance of going deep into the playoffs even if we are so fortunate to make them by winning 87 to 89 games. Under that assumption, I would definitely want to stay below the CBT and even leave some financial flexibility for a mid season move. Adding a single player won't change our chances to give us a significantly better chance. I believe Bloom expects to bring Downs up during the season so doesn't want to invest in second base, except for a place holder.
  8. Maybe LA can trade him and pay part of his existing contract to clear some financial space. I don't want him back but maybe someone would risk it at $10 million a year. Or they could throw in a prospect and take part of his contract. We are still stuck for $16 mil for 2.
  9. I seldom like your suggested trades and would rather wait for Bloom to make moves. I don't want to lose Vaz and he doesn't want to go. I also want to keep our top outfield prospect. If we could get value for Beni or Chavis then that is worth considering. Value can come in $ savings, prospects or a filling of needs such as relief pitching or CF.
  10. So when does the 40 man roster have to be adjusted for the new acquisitions?
  11. Don't think it is quite strong enough to be in contention and definitely pushes us over the salary cap.
  12. An article this morning claims we are 7 to 10 million from a $210 cap now without money for contingency later in the season. Identifying 2 or 3 more players we could sign doesn't line up very well if we plan to stay under the cap in a year we probably won't be serious contenders. Moving a player to make room for prospects coming up or a quality signing in the outfield makes more sense. Beni and Chavis are places to look but neither seems to be in demand.
  13. I think they are looking for another outfielder and would have traded Beni by now if they could have gotten something considered valuable in return. In general, I think the Sox are looking to promote a few likely candidates from the farm during 2021 so want to be judicious in not blocking them with multi-year contracts for journeyman players this year.
  14. If you believe Beni to be not much more than an average player and you can get prospects plus clear $5 mil that could be applied to a better than average outfielder, why not go in that direction? Another obvious thought is the Sox management may believe the farm now holds a prospect who can fill the position and the goal should always be to bring up ML ready players.
  15. I would expect additional Sox moves to make room on the 40 man. We still need a CF, whether it be Duran with his left handed bat, JBJ or another. There has been a lot of criticism of Bloom for his inactivity, but last week there were two moves and now two pitching moves. I fully expect Bloom to come through with trades affecting the 40 man and resolving the outfield issues. Beni is possible if someone will give value in return. Chavis is another and who knows who else on the current 40 man will be dropped in favor of making us a more competitive team in 2021 and beyond.
  16. I think we got Richards in a $10 mil one year deal so wouldn't we now be looking for a CF and a closer?
  17. Boston sports writers think all of them will make it sometime in 2021.
  18. Clearly Bloom has been looking at Pitching all along. We reportedly made a solid offer to Kluber but he chose the Yankees for other reasons. No need to criticize Bloom for lack of widespread trying.
  19. I'd say that is likely and that we add an outfielder in his place. I doubt if JBJ is back, but if we can give $7 mil for two to Hernandez, maybe we can pay JBJ competitively.
  20. And if the Sox trade away Beni, the payroll is flat and the payroll can either go to prospects with the remainder available to go toward a quality outfielder. Looks like a reasonable move although Sox fans tend to be hyper critical. Do they want top dollar stars no w? It won't happen.
  21. Funny. Us older folks have trouble with huge contracts, having come from a time where houses cost one hundredth of what they cost today.
  22. Let's start applying some of our farm to the majors this year as well. Downs, Casas and Duran have a shot as well as multiple pitching prospects. Will they see the majors this season and if so, who on the 40 man will be traded? Chavis, Beni, Dalbec? With that thought in mind, our FA acquisitions should be for relatively short term contracts. Hernandez for 2 is the latest hot rumor.
  23. i think the Springer deal has resulted in higher expectations for JBJ. Maybe he will get $12 mil for 2 years. That will put him out of the Sox range. There is also a lot of talk about Beni and now the Brewers. Where there is smoke there probably is fire. Beni for prospects would mean we would not only have to replace JBJ but also Beni. That may mean one from within and perhaps an Ozuna. I expected at least one significant move this week but so far nothing. Due diligence is important but time is slipping by.
  24. That is quite the dream although these players will be bid for competitively
  25. With the top tier outfielder contract agreed, can JBJ be far behind? We will need at least one outfielder, depending on what we do with Beni, if anything.
