  1. Trading Beni for pitching prospects strengthens our minors and also reduced our payroll by $6.6Mil per year. We lose an average defensive player with little pop and an awful performance since Aug 2019. Will he return to a better than average hitter? Maybe but I wouldn't count on it. Taking his salary and using it with a few Mil more we ought to be able to get a replacement LF with equal defense, more pop and less doubts. To me it is about making improvements with each move we make.
  2. I have been expecting an attempt to trade Beni. If Bloom can find reasonable value, which is a big if, he would be losing an average defensive outfielder who is questionable offensively going forward. What is not questionable is that Beni has little pop and the Sox have had a closer look at him than any of us have had. They appear to have concluded that they can do better in LF and that is while CF is still wide open. It would probably be best for Beni as well to get a fresh start for a new team.
  3. What ever happened to players making ML debuts at 17 or even 16 year olds? There were some of those in the 40's and 50's. Our own Jim Pagliaroni made a cameo debut as a 17 yo but didn't stick until he was around 20. Now we have players 24 and 25 and a lot of contributors here say they need more development time. Is it because we don't have talent in the minors. Devers was the youngest we have brought up recently. The Padres brought up Tatis a little younger.
  4. Beni is on the trade block since Sox management don't project him as a sure bet to have a good 2021. Regardless of what happens with Beni, the Sox still need a CF. Renfroe was brought in as a right hand power hitter, since our entire outfield were lefties, and he can fill that bill for us. From my understanding Renfroe can play left of right field. I am hoping Bloom makes other moves soon so we can see where we are headed.
  5. The Sox are no doubt floating a lot of names out there. Beni is an obvious one since he had a sub par 2019 and started 2020 in a funk. Maybe some GM would value him high enough to get a good return in relief pitching, but it is just another case of the Sox looking for ways to improve the team. The Sox do need a CF as well as pitching, so there is much to do and time is getting shorter. Players are reluctant to take bargain contracts and owners are watching expenditures so the market will continue to be slow. We don't really know when the season will start, so that also is weighing on player and owner decision making. If Beni returns to decent form is anyone's guess. I'm not as optimistic as you are but agree that it is possible.
  6. The Sox are testing the waters and hope to find a combination, including Beni, that will get us meaningful relief pitching.
  7. That would violate Bloom's stated approach and as a result I think grabbing either is highly unlikely.
  8. Our next target of interest is Sugano. I understand that decision will come by Jan 7th. The Mets are reportedly in the lead, but we are in there as well. He would fit our needs very well.
  9. To me the extreme length of the contract was even more of an issue than the yearly dollar amount. I'd like to see how baseball execs handle and monetize risk in long term contract situations.
  10. If you advocate signing Kim, who looks like a nice asset, how would you then handle Downs? Trade or keep for what purpose?
  11. The approach to getting rid of deadwood included a time stipulation. One year of poor performance might get you put on notice but not fired. So it comes down to judgment. Is a players upside worth taking a chance on?
  12. I'll agree with the idea that we could still use an outfielder, either from trade, FA or within the organization. The corollary to that is hat we need to be willing to let go of those that aren't performing by replacing them with the new additions who we hope will perform better. In my prior work life we operated a fairly hard ass personnel policy that identified the A, B and C players with the dictate of replacing C players in order to improve our competitiveness. I see something like that approach being used on baseball roster. I tend to be a little old school in that I like the idea of loyalty by both managers and players, although there is not much of that around these days. Even so, the team needs to get rid of dead wood and I believe under Bloom, we will do just that. Not something where we snap our fingers and it all gets done, but more a steady approach where each move is done either of necessity or to directly improve the team. I expect to see substantial activity in January and February.
  13. Be interesting to learn what the Rangers had to pay to obtain and middle to bottom of the rotation starter.
  14. The Sox made a strong offer for Kanhle but lost. He is not available to pitch this season. Kind of indicates what the club is thinking.
  15. I'm about as old school as they come and I am on board with Bloom. He is patient, disciplined and has a plan that I believe will work. He is the right choice after DD.
  16. The market has been extremely slow for a number of reasons. One big reason is that with COVID, it is not clear what the season will look like, and particularly when fans will return to ball parks. With the economics up in the air, the FA market will likely to remain stagnant. Many don't expect any deals to take place until at least January of 2021 and possibly into February.
  17. Or Beni might be on the decline for whatever reason. We keep him in the lineup for 3 months, while he struggles, which costs us a chance of making the playoffs. Either scenario is possible, but putting a better player in his place removes the negative possibility.
  18. Unloading guys we don't want or need makes sense to me. Why spend another year trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Do we really believe keeping underperformers is a good approach to building a consistently competitive team? I don't and instead think of replacing them with league average or better players now is the way to go.
  19. I'd much rather see Beni go than Duran. I'm hoping for a future in which our young controllable talent gives us an advantage. To me Chavis, Arauz and Beni could go. Dalbec would be hard to lose but with Casas in the wings still a thought. We could use another outfielder, whether from trade, FA or from below. Still, we need to do something for pitching and that remains a priority. I like Cora's view that the team needs to play faster so believe they need players with that capability.
  20. I hadn't seen that information. Interesting that nothing was said about his defense, which was what he was supposed to be working on in Puerto Rico.
  21. Why so anxious to trade away Duran. From what Cora says he wants, to play faster with more speed on the bases, Duran looks like an up an comer who would fit Cora's profile. He is playing in the DR now I believe, to get him ready.
  22. Maybe Duran is ready. I'd hate it if the Sox held him back just so they could remain in control another year.
  23. So what do they call them, the Eries? No that might be too close to the name of a tribe, plus they might insult some scary folks. LSMFT
  24. I know as I just lost a fellow softball player to COVID on Saturday. He was old, but he will be missed.
