We have to be looking at Refroe, Codero and Dalbec to see if they will produce. Devers is a slow starter so that isn't anything new. I would hope that Spring training wasn't an illusion and the hitting will show up.

I remember it being discussed but also that the discussion was futile because no one was likely to pay even half his salary following such a tough showing in 2020. Now he is here for 2021, the best strategy is to let him try to return to his past good form. Letting him try means at least a couple of months. If it doesn't work out, we should know by then. Not as if we will be compromising a shot at the pennant.

Interesting and probably true throughout MLBB, the field players for the Socks consist of Latinos or islanders with the exception of Dalbec and Palawecki. Even the utility players Gonzalez and Arroyo have that background. Perhaps they play BB year round on the islands and in the southern US where immigration has resulted in Latinos becoming a high proportion of the population. I'm and old guy and remember when there were very few, so times have changed. Not against the change, only noting it.

Then there is Duran knocking on the door. Hit a HR and Double today and is a fine athlete. Chavis too is keeping the pressure on. The opening day guys know the competition is there so they need to perform. -
Verdugo is an excellent piece of the outfield while in the case of Renfroe and Codero, the verdict is out. They are still young enough so there is hope. I was just pointing out the risk associated with those two. Duran could well be a solid outfielder soon. His slump late in Spring training justifies giving him a little more time.

The schedule for the first 15 games looked like we could come away with a positive record. E-Rod's loss and Covid impacting our BP could set us back temporarily.

I am also concerned with our outfield. We are probably opening with Renfroe and Codero. They could be fine but you have to wonder about guys who weren't solid enough to be kept by their current teams. Renfroe looks like a good fielder. I noticed Codero likes to play so deep that balls can fall in on him. ERod is the largest concern but you have to also wonder why management is taking the risk in the outfield.

Hate to see young players slumping during ST. Duran appears to me to be doing that now. He wasn't going to make the opening day roster anyway, but it is not a good thing to see him start to struggle now.

Extremely bad luck for the Sox as he was our planned #1 starter. I hope he can return to form quickly, but a dead arm for a pitcher sounds ominous.

He also followed advice that he needed to pull more and hit more HR to add to his value. The opposite result occurred. Now he has to try to find himself again. I sensed an emotional reaction that was negative.

I too believe 13 pitchers are enough until at least mid April. That leaves room for 3 utility players and if Codero starts on the IL then M Gonzalez will likely start in LF. I'd say Arroyo and Chavis are locks and I would take Duran over Arauz. When Codero returns and they go to 14 pitchers, will it be Arroyo and Gonzalez? Tough call as Chavis is hitting so well.

The impact of him not performing well is significant since he have the highest pay level of any of the non pitchers on the squad. His value is based almost entirely on his hitting. So far in ST he hasn't demonstrated power. I am hoping we are not seeing a decline due to age.

I agree. Better to find a way to break camp with Chavis on the roster and one less pitcher.

He probably wasn't 160 as previously reported and may not be 221 now. I don't believe those weight numbers.

I would have rolled the dice with Duran instead of Codero. One in the hand is worth two in the bush. But I enjoy betting the ponies, so probably am not the best of advocates.

Duran won't make the team out of ST. They want him to get more CF experience. -
The JDM situation may be one of the most important in determining how the Sox fare competitively in 2021 and 2022. What you say is true, if he has a solid year and helps the club then we need to keep him as it is unlikely that another club would step up at his pay level for 2022. If his season is a bust no one will want him and he will be with us through 2022 with his salary holding the club back. My guess is he will have a decent year but with diminished HR output.
