  1. Yes, I agree and see that as a major mistake by Cora. While the players were largely to blame for the poor showing in the first 3 Rays games, I see Cora as the culprit in last night's game.
  2. I agree that relying on 3 or 4 hitters in the lineup to carry the team just can't work in the long term. Bloom had opportunities to improve the situation but didn't. Now, we may wind up as sellers of our main strengths. Hard to understand what Bloom's master plan is or what the constraints are that keep him for effective moves.
  3. Cora didn't manage that well.
  4. If Duran can hit a little, he is valuable as a base runner. Good job stealing, getting to third on Raffy's ground out and home on the wild pitch. Much needed double by Bogie to put us up by 3.
  5. The Sox are going through a very tough set of games while trying to recover from an injury riddled pitching staff. In addition, they are featuring some of the least feared hitters in the league in Downs, JBJ and Dalbec and possibly throw in Duran. Add to that the lethargic style of play and it adds up to a losing streak. Decisions made earlier are bearing fruit, but it is rotten. Should the Sox try to recover by making trades at this point or sell off? If Bloom has a master plan it has not been clear since the start of the season. Is it going to be action to improve the team or a sell off?
  6. Any information about Story's hand?
  7. We have a weak lineup tonight with Dalbec, Downs and Bradley at the bottom. Does anyone know if Story is sidelined for long?
  8. I mentioned the front office coming up with some sort of pyramid scheme for paying players. Pay your best up the middle players and two starting pitchers the most and then scaling down payments based upon the criticality of position. it is also clear that such a scheme requires a regular influx of prospects such that the budget for salary average stays below the penalty free number. Some flexibility is required but there should be a long term plan to optimize team performance year to year. Do Devers at $30M and Bogey at $27 fit that scenario? There is also the risk analysis involved in any business plan and long term commitments have the greatest associated risk. We already have Sale signed at big bucks for the end of a long term contract. To date that signing has not worked to the team's interest. Let's hope he can return and give us at least some value for the large contract we gave His contract just demonstrates how risky things can get.
  9. I agree that Devers should be the number 1 target. I also dislike contracts spanning as long at 10 years, but it may take that to keep Devers. He is still just approaching his prime years so if we don't do it for him, who would we ever do it for?
  10. The game last night says more about the Yankees than the Sox. They are not some unbeatable juggernaut but one in which their relief pitching has flaws, their defense was poor and hitting only so so. We beat them with Dalbec, Jeter and Duran in the lineup. Dalbec and Jeter have poor plate discipline while Duran was at least making contact. The guy who is surprisingly giving us a boost is Refsnyder (sp). We may have a useful outfielder there.
  11. We need to be realistic with expectations for Sales upcoming performance. I am hoping he can go 5 innings and hold his own. I have no expectations that he will look like and ace, but his competitiveness an experience should get him through a 5 inning stint. He can build on that going forward. I had hoped for a little more offense from Story. He is our best defender though.
  12. Shows the value of having speed on the team. Giving Duran a real chance may provide dividends although his defense needs to improve.
  13. Which is too many. Other teams know of the weaknesses so it makes trading any of them problematical unless coupled with prospects the other teams may want. This leaves us with attempting to pick up pitching with cash considerations, swapping away our better prospects or promoting additional pitchers from within. I would hate to see the front office panic and give away key prospects, especially given that we may falter when facing the iron of the American League East shortly before the AS break. If the front office decides some of our prospects are not key to our future success, then perhaps those players could be trade bait, but what might they bring? My view is this year is another in which the team will tread water and next year we may be in a more solid financial position to really strengthen the team. Only then can we see if Bloom and ownership are heading us in the right direction.
  14. We know the Sox BP is weak. We still will have to go through the Yankees, Blue Jays and Rays before the all star break. With our BP, that sounds problematic. Don't think Bloom can rectify the situation this season.
  15. Yes, our lineups are similar in potency. Tonight we are going with a rookie pitcher so you have to think they have an advantage. Should be a good one.
  16. That would be the Alou brothers
  17. I'm bothered by Story's propensity to strike out. Other than one flurry, he has not produced. Bogey is still a consistent hitter but his role going forward with probably be at 2nd base and/or designated hitter over the next 5 seasons. I would think that might lower his value to any team, but as you have said, he is worth what the market says he is worth. I am all for the Sox making him a solid offer in line with his value but not more in pay or years.
  18. Possibly E-Rod had emotional problems that were known to the Sox, who decided the risk factor of resigning him was too great for the money he could command.
  19. Every front office makes contract mistakes. We are no different and have made some commitments that a more courageous and wise front office would not have made. Kimmi often is against extremely long contracts and I agree with her in that respect, even if it means parting with a very talented player. In addition offering expensive and long term contracts based on a player you should know is injured or going past their prime may be deciding with your heart and not your head. The effects of those decisions limit a team's competitiveness unless their is unlimited money. Not many teams are in that category. The talk here has been about Pedey and Sale. We are also now still dealing with the Price and Barnes contracts. Bring on Billy Ball. No more foolishness if we are to achieve Bloom's stated competitiveness objectives.
  20. The next steps may well include making a major effort to keep our current strengths together where at all possible, and shoring up areas that are not currently strengths. Keeping Bogaerts, Devers and Story will be important but keeping Martinez might not be possible. Shoring up first base by letting go of poor performers, and prospects we don't seem to believe can be promoted and replacing them with a proven performer like Trey Mancini could give us a top infield with some juggling. Our outfield is underperforming but JBJ appears to be regaining his best form so we might look elsewhere for replacements as confidence in Duran's development has taken a hit. We have some good young pitching prospects. Maybe it's time to reevaluate talent versus experience. Part of the answer to resolve our pitching woes may well be to promote from within.
  21. I wouldn't characterize Betts departure as being sent packing. He was offered a very attractive contract which he didn't accept. The Dodgers offered more and for what I think was a high risk contract length. Only time will tell if the Dodgers will get fair value for the money spent.
  22. I agree with this as a steady stream of good quality lower cost players generated through promotion of our prospects and/or trade of them to fill our needs is important. it helps to balance our budget as we also need to pay our star player fair value. Drafting as well as our record allows is another component of success as is the quality of our development process. The occasional dive into the FA market to fill in a position where we have a deficiency and no prospect or reasonable trade can fill the bill is a final component. All teams let out some unfortunate contracts and we certainly have been guilty of that Currently we are still eating the Price contract, we are paying Sale big money and he has been unavailable and Barnes seemed to tank shortly after receiving his new contract. Those hits on the budget limits what the team can do to help itself. Part of these contracts can be seen as bad luck, but wisdom at the GM level is an asset that when used can minimize dead money contracts.
  23. It's nearly mid May now and things aren't improving. I am hopeful that Kike will find his swing soon. I doubt Dalbec will every be a consistent hitter and JBJ is giving about what was expected of him, which is okay on a team with 5 or 6 strong hitters. Cordero is another weak hitter. Bloom really only got Story this winter and he is still adjusting. Time to consider moving Dalbec down and finding better hitting bench options.
  24. With the lack of quality of the moves made by Bloom this winter season and the Sale continuing injury saga, my expectations for the team were for a 500 season. The slow start by Hernandez and Dalbec have been particularly troubling. I am in the camp of wanting changes sooner than later. I don't sense that will happen as there doesn't appear to be any urgency felt by management.
  25. With our prospect list supposedly improving, it is surprising we haven't brought up anyone other than Duran for one game, since we are clearly deficient in run scoring capability. Time to bolster the lineup, as expecting Bogaerts, Devers and Martinez to carry the load is not working.
