  1. That would be the Alou brothers
  2. I'm bothered by Story's propensity to strike out. Other than one flurry, he has not produced. Bogey is still a consistent hitter but his role going forward with probably be at 2nd base and/or designated hitter over the next 5 seasons. I would think that might lower his value to any team, but as you have said, he is worth what the market says he is worth. I am all for the Sox making him a solid offer in line with his value but not more in pay or years.
  3. Possibly E-Rod had emotional problems that were known to the Sox, who decided the risk factor of resigning him was too great for the money he could command.
  4. Every front office makes contract mistakes. We are no different and have made some commitments that a more courageous and wise front office would not have made. Kimmi often is against extremely long contracts and I agree with her in that respect, even if it means parting with a very talented player. In addition offering expensive and long term contracts based on a player you should know is injured or going past their prime may be deciding with your heart and not your head. The effects of those decisions limit a team's competitiveness unless their is unlimited money. Not many teams are in that category. The talk here has been about Pedey and Sale. We are also now still dealing with the Price and Barnes contracts. Bring on Billy Ball. No more foolishness if we are to achieve Bloom's stated competitiveness objectives.
  5. The next steps may well include making a major effort to keep our current strengths together where at all possible, and shoring up areas that are not currently strengths. Keeping Bogaerts, Devers and Story will be important but keeping Martinez might not be possible. Shoring up first base by letting go of poor performers, and prospects we don't seem to believe can be promoted and replacing them with a proven performer like Trey Mancini could give us a top infield with some juggling. Our outfield is underperforming but JBJ appears to be regaining his best form so we might look elsewhere for replacements as confidence in Duran's development has taken a hit. We have some good young pitching prospects. Maybe it's time to reevaluate talent versus experience. Part of the answer to resolve our pitching woes may well be to promote from within.
  6. I wouldn't characterize Betts departure as being sent packing. He was offered a very attractive contract which he didn't accept. The Dodgers offered more and for what I think was a high risk contract length. Only time will tell if the Dodgers will get fair value for the money spent.
  7. I agree with this as a steady stream of good quality lower cost players generated through promotion of our prospects and/or trade of them to fill our needs is important. it helps to balance our budget as we also need to pay our star player fair value. Drafting as well as our record allows is another component of success as is the quality of our development process. The occasional dive into the FA market to fill in a position where we have a deficiency and no prospect or reasonable trade can fill the bill is a final component. All teams let out some unfortunate contracts and we certainly have been guilty of that Currently we are still eating the Price contract, we are paying Sale big money and he has been unavailable and Barnes seemed to tank shortly after receiving his new contract. Those hits on the budget limits what the team can do to help itself. Part of these contracts can be seen as bad luck, but wisdom at the GM level is an asset that when used can minimize dead money contracts.
  8. It's nearly mid May now and things aren't improving. I am hopeful that Kike will find his swing soon. I doubt Dalbec will every be a consistent hitter and JBJ is giving about what was expected of him, which is okay on a team with 5 or 6 strong hitters. Cordero is another weak hitter. Bloom really only got Story this winter and he is still adjusting. Time to consider moving Dalbec down and finding better hitting bench options.
  9. With the lack of quality of the moves made by Bloom this winter season and the Sale continuing injury saga, my expectations for the team were for a 500 season. The slow start by Hernandez and Dalbec have been particularly troubling. I am in the camp of wanting changes sooner than later. I don't sense that will happen as there doesn't appear to be any urgency felt by management.
  10. With our prospect list supposedly improving, it is surprising we haven't brought up anyone other than Duran for one game, since we are clearly deficient in run scoring capability. Time to bolster the lineup, as expecting Bogaerts, Devers and Martinez to carry the load is not working.
  11. All that was needed is a bat on the ball to the right side. Time to consider a change.
  12. Umpires differ quite a lot. Some give strikes with pitches clearly outside the zone while others call balls that are clearly in the zone. I believe technology assisted umpiring would help the game and would not be noticed by the fans.
  13. Take the bottom most performer out and replace him with our best prospect? Is it Bello? Just a thought and perhaps too early to consider at this point.
  14. Houck has great stuff with much greater than average movement on his pitches. Because of that, he has trouble consistently throwing strikes. last night he was done in 3.1 innings. That doesn't make for quality starts from him. Unfortunately, closers also need to be able to throw strikes. The real issue is that Houck needs to master his command to be either and effective starter or closer.
  15. Thanks for the support. With the war and the loss of a close friend, I was quite sad. That said, Trevor Story was brought in after I took a hiatus. I am supportive of that move, but must admit to being skeptical of JBJ being our right fielder and at the money he will get. I am also disappointed that we didn't make a stronger play for pitching. I guess we shall see if Bloom's moves stand the test of time.
  16. I've been away for personal reasons but have read the postings from time to time. I am against granting very long contracts, especially for pitchers and players in their prime. Mookie's contract being an example of that kind. In Raffie's case, at such a young age, one can wonder what very long term means. I might go to 8 years with an earlier opt out although, given his body type, he may well wind up as primarily a DH over the contract period.
  17. With Putin showing himself to be a complete psychopath, MLBB seems of little importance. My prayers to the unfortunate masses who will be killed and deprived of their liberty.
  18. There have been slight adjustments in the positions of both sides, which shows that some negotiations are still going on with further adjustments possible. If it comes down to a strike and longish delay on settlement, I believe the owners are in the stronger position.
  19. Why should that be the case?
  20. I think the point is more to do with how much money one needs and how one players greed will impact what the team can do for others.
  21. I paid $50 a ticket to see the Sox vs the Braves and the stadium was full at Northport, Fla. They certainly make money on these games.
  22. I'm guessing around June 1. I see no current signs of a willingness to compromise on the key financial issues. It will take some financial pain to bring about that willingness. The owners can look at the full length of the CBA while the players typically have fewer years and may feel year by year pressure to settle. Since there will be a 30 day period of preseason conditioning I believe opening day will be delayed.
  23. MLB could do without Soto but where could Soto get such a lucrative offer outside of MLB?
  24. If the deal takes a long time to complete, a lot of veterans will find themselves out of baseball, being superseded by younger players because they will not have time to show they can still compete at the ML level. The new CBA negotiations may shorten the careers of these veteran players.
