  1. This is disingenuous of Boras. JDM is staying because he didn't think it likely he could get a better deal, especially with the CBA in question. He also knew that the Sox were likely to go after Schwaber to fill the position. No Sox front office executive is going to promise to work to make the team better, presumably by spending extra money, to make JDM feel more comfortable staying. Just more oras hokum.
  2. I am on the side of trading him if he reaches $7.5 Mil in arbitration. I like the idea of Marte for 3 years although he may be too costly and interfere with pitching acquisitions. Renfroe will be no more than an average defensive outfielder who will struggle to hit playoff quality pitching. At $3 Mil it makes sense but ay $7.5 there are other options.
  3. The Barnes extension.
  4. All the talk of FA signings and trades may not bear fruit if the CBA can't be agreed upon. The old agreement expires on Dec 1st and it seems unlikely that a new agreement can be reached by then. Talking heads are predicting an owner lockout before Spring Training. I hope it doesn't happen, but I can't see teams stocking up on expensive FAs if they expect a lockout.
  5. so where are we going? 1st Base Dalbec/Casas 2nd Base FA/Arroyo SS Bogey 3rd Base Devers (lets extend him now) LF Verdugo CF Kike RF FA (Marte)/Renfroe (Might we best trade Renfroe and get a more reliable hitter in the playoffs) C Vaz, Prospect DH JDM (Can't see both JDM and Schwaber) Utility OF(Duran or Locastro), IF(Arroyo), IF(Casas) SP Eovaldi, FA, Sale, E-Rod, Pivetta, (Houck 6th starter or long relief) RP Whitlock, FA (Gravemen), Brasier, Taylor, Houck, Barnes, (Sawamura or D-Hernandez)Hernandez might be a fit as a second lefty Can we afford a FA 2nd or 3rd starter, a middle range FA RP, a FA 2nd Baseman and a FA replacement for Renfroe? Based upon who will be back, I see these move areas as the most likely.
  6. I'd be surprised if the Sox don't promote Mayer for the 2024 season. He represents the Sox SS of the future. With that in mind, do we want to commit the Sox to a $27Mil second baseman for 4 years following Mayer's debut? I don't know the answer to that question, unless we can use either of these two as PT DH's as well as 2nd basemen. Even then, it is a lot to pay for the position. Both Bogaerts and Semien are top level MLers now, but will they be tradable in 2024 with that kind of contract? I also can't see both on the roster at the same time between 2022 and 2024. Kind of like JDM and Schwaber, being hard to carry at the same time.
  7. My view: Kike RF Schwaber DH Semien SS Devers 3B Marte CF Verdugo LF Dalbec/Casas 1B Arroyo/Downs 2B Vaz/Hernandez C Eovaldi, Sale, Stroman, Pivetta, Houck, Seabold Iglesias, Whitlock, Taylor, D-Hern, Sawamura, Brasier, Barnes, Valdez UT: Casas, Downs, Duran
  8. Beware of Greeks bearing gifts. The only guy on this who was on a WS winning team was Freddie Freeman. The Braves won't let Freddie walk. Correa is a very good short stop but didn't do a lot against the good pitching of the Braves I can see Semien, as it weakens Jays. Only if we trade Bogaerts, which is by no means an easy thing to do. I can see Stroman, particularly if E-Rod leaves. I can see Marte if Renfroe is traded. I can see Schwaber if JDM opts out. I think Iglesias is needed and hopefully he can perform to expectations. Backfill from the organization for the rest.
  9. The Braves experienced tough player losses during the year and not much was expected of them. They made acquisitions that were smart and that propelled them to win the WS. Carlos Correa was on the losing team. Before we empty the bank for any player, we should examine the Braves approach.
  10. Our prospect top 25 who are projected as ML ready in 2021/2022 consists of 12 players. They are: Casas 1st base Duran OF Downs SS/2nd Cannon SS/2nd Hernandez C Wong C Bello P Groome P Murphy P Seabold P Wincowski P Crawford P Which of these, if any, will make the active roster and which will make the 40 man? We have only 1 first base candidate and one OF candidate. We also have 2 SS/2nd base candidates but one with a higher rating. Then there are 2 catchers with one of those being at least considered. With 7 pitchers, probably 5 of those stand a chance during thee year. Right now, we have weak spots at 2nd base, first base, OF and Catcher and of course pitching. We have potential players for all of those positions on our prospect list. Also if we wish to chase an exceptional talent, such as Semien, a player like Downs might be sacrificed. That would come at a high cost but might be worth the plunge. I wonder how Bloom feels?
  11. I don't see Dalbec as a DH. He is too strikeout prone. I would keep him as a platoon player at first and part of our utility group. Casas can be the second platoon 1st baseman. I would also bring in a replacement for Renfroe who simply was no threat against playoff caliber pitching. Marte might be available on a short term contract and is still a fine outfielder and is solid offensively. Arroyo is a capable3e defensive second baseman who could also fill a utility role provided we find a FT second baseman. Possible starting pitcher and one or two BP pieces and we are there. I still believe Duran can fill our utility outfield position and maybe more.
  12. By thinking of the jdm decision as a key to start the ball rolling, I mean it will come early and clarify whether we stay with him or go after Schwaber. I don't expect jdm to be tradable and don't see us trying to carry both players, as that money could be best used elsewhere. I think the Collective Bargaining Agreement will go through many ups and downs with a work stoppage a real possibility. The players want to have a strong FA market while the owners want to expand their take. The uncertainty of the CBA would in my mind reduce the front office incentive to go after expensive FA's who then might not play a full season in 2022. I see it as more of a wet blanket of trades and FA until a settlement is reached. All businesses try to increase their profits year to year as stockholders invest with the thought of getting a reasonable ROI. I don't know of other businesses in which workers can expect to have long term contracts at such absurd salaries.
  13. Soon after the WS conclusion, we will know about JDM. That is one of the keys to start the ball rolling. The status of the CBD may also slow the front offices who will not want to make major commitments if there is to be a work stoppage.
  14. The 30 mil for Mookie wasn't the problem, it was the length of contract.
  15. Freeman is not going anywhere. I'd stay away from Rizzo. Bryant and Seager are big bucks. Comforto and Belt might fit. With Marte and Comforto, we might consider moving Kike back to second base.
  16. I like the idea of Marte. He would probably come for a shorter term contract. I would trade Renfroe if we went for Marte. Even at his age, he still has good speed.
  17. If all you are looking at is base stealing, then you are missing the three infield hits so far in the WS. Two by the Braves and one by the Astros. There is also the ability to get an extra base which some of our players just cannot do. Speed also helps defensive range as well. Given a chance to improve team speed, I would seriously consider it.
  18. What do you think of the story being floated about the Cubs possibly trading Wilson Contrares?
  19. Those against making the change like to demean it by calling it Robo Umpiring. In fact, it is just computer assisted strike calling to provide a more accurate result and as you say would not be noticeable. There would still be an umpire behind the plate who would still fulfill all the other duties. No one loses a job, it doesn't look different and is more accurate.
  20. The discussions leading toward a new MLBB contract may result in a work stoppage. That possibility may well Tampa the GM's expectations and leave the fans to sit in front of a cold stove.
  21. So one answer is not to play guys like Schwaber and Martinez in the field. We'll find out possibilities on that front following the WS. Bogie is in an opt out year coming up. It sounds like he sees big, long term contracts being paid and he wants in on that. That's nothing against him, who wouldn't, if they can get it. Personally, I think Bogie is a valuable player, but I wouldn't empty the bank for him. We will be facing the same with Devers soon, so we will see how Bloom deals with the idea of expensive long term contracts.
  22. Last night the Braves scored 3 runs due to their elite speed guys. Two beat out infield hits and one stolen base. It's doubly helpful when those guys are also good fielders. The Sox tend to be slow and the infield is the worst in the league defensively. The players in the Sox system who have elite speed are Duran and Rosario. From what I saw of Duran, he made all the plays that came his way and wasn't given nearly the opportunity Gonzalez was given at the plate. Rosario regressed at the plate this year. Notin loves to rag on Duran constantly for reasons known only to him. I want to keep the kid and to give him a real opportunity to make the team. We have Verdugo and Kike who did a good job this year and Renfroe, not so much. The idea of playing Schwaber as a regular outfielder is asking for trouble. He could as a fill in but not FT. Injury issues and marginal defense should keep him at DH and only if Martinez opts out. We could have an outfield spot open plus our bench should include a utility outfielder. There is room for Duran.
  23. Some pretty imaginative trades. Who wouldn't want Montcastle? Montas would be a help as well. Don't like the idea of Schwaber in LF. Let's wait to see who outs out before considering that one.
  24. As I remember our last 3 games of the ALCS, we lost because we couldn't hit. Our pitching was solid except for one inning a game. Renfroe was a sure out, sometimes two. Dalbec wasn't used. I take the position that we would be smart to add a top FA outfielder and trade Renfroe or at least move him to the 4th slot. We could do better at 1st base but Dalbec at least should he kept. Where are the guys like Rod Carew and Cecil Cooper, who were hitting machines. Need to stop swinging for the fences and go back to moving the line. Notin seems to have something negative to say about Duran with every post. He still is our best outfield prospect and hardly got his feet wet in 2021. I'm for keeping him as our 4th outfielder. He would be inexpensive and could surprise in 2022.
  25. I'd like to make a case that having dominant starting pitching is what wins championship series. I can't see that the data supports that in the case of the Braves impressive 6 game series win over the Dodgers. Here is what happened. The Braves came in with 3 very good starting Pitchers (Fried, Anderson and Morton). Here's how they farred. G1 Fried went 6 and gave up 2 ERs G2 Anderson went 3 and gave up 2 ERs G3 Morton went 5 and gave up 2 RRs G4 Chavez went 1 as an opener and gave up 0 ERs G5 Fried went 4.2/3 and gave up 5 ERs G6 Anderson went 4 and gave up 1 ER I know this is a small sample but it seems to indicate that having a strong BP with quality starters is what wins series. The starters went 23 2/3 inning and the BP went 28 1/3.(I'm assuming the Dodgers got up in 9 innings a game although they may only have gotten up 8 in games they won, but it doesn't change the fact that the BP pitched more innings than the starters). You need both facets of pitching to be effective in the championship series. It will be interesting to see how this plays out during the WS.
