    When you have JD hitting 3rd with two very high on base percentage guys, you have the ultimate run scoring capability at the front of the order. Excellent use of players.

    The acquisition of Pearse and Brasier have produced instant improvement where we have been weak. The acquisition of a versatille full time second base prospect would improve the team as well Whit Merrifield instead of Nunez on the team would be a plus. Thornburg has not been any kind of help as yet and Smith self destructed while we almost never see Robbie Scott and perhaps wish we didn't see Hembree. There is a lot of room for improvement in the relief pitching. Also Pom hasn't done the job as a starter. He is an $8.5 mil player and is he worth that to the club now and will he be in future? A viable starter is hard to find but a switch there going into next year would also be a plus. Get rid of possible trading chips from the team and replace at least some of them with positive impact players.

    We didn't just add one huge bat with Martinez but also a hitting coach on the field and an example to others. Along with Cora's prodding Bogaerts has turned his hitting around as well. We also can't ignore the duo of Moreland/Pease as opposed to Moreland/Rameriz. There is a significant difference there in example and in cost for next year. Give dd credit for that. We still have holes in the lineup and have perhaps unforeseen issues but of course every team has some of those. What DD can do at second base, to shore up the pitching for the second half and catching will be important. I for one don't recommend blowing by the luxury tax but instead might try to eliminate some salary and then use it to strengthen the team. Lets see how DD plays the hand. Even without any moves, if we just win half the remaining games we will get to 100 wins.

    Red Sox relief pitching may lose this one.

    Reading the latest on Pedroia it seems he still wants to come back but it is looking for doubtful for this year. As he ages and time continues to take its toll, we probably will never see the Pedroia we once knew as an all star player and if he does return it will be in a diminished state. My opinion is we should continue to look for a full time 2nd base prospect. It doesn't need to be Scooter Gennett as there are other capable candidates. The second base needs rank up there but probably lower in priority with catcher and relief pitching. Hope to see that addressed for next season.

    My point of view on a play last night that happened with JBJ at bat. Nothing to do withwhether to trade him but just a handy place to make a comment, since he was involved in the play. Two outs, runner on base, Mookie on deck, game certinly not a lock, JBJ hits a line drive in the gap. My point of view is that with an easy double and in scoring position and a 50/50 chance of makiing 3rd, why take the risk. Possibly score on a pass ball, a balk or and little infield hit versus risk injury sliding and take the batt out of Mookie's hands. I would have had him stay at second. Don't know if it was Jackie's excitement or the 3rd base coach that caused him to go but in my judgment it was the worst of the two choices.

    To bad that Beeks freaks when pitching in the majors. He has good stuff but his head is doing him in so far. He needs to go back down and get control whatever is causing him to be nervous.

    Leon is a veteran catcher with miles on him and is 5'11" and around 230 pounds. Catching in the hot weather is grueling and I suspect he will have to be relegated to 3 days in 5 to keep him in playing condition. One also has to worry about what happens if he gets injured. Catchers are injury prone. Either Swihart is looked upon as a real sub or the Sox need to look for one right now.

    Even if the were, the Sox don't have the pieces to make a trade like that and they don't have the luxury cap space.

    Where did Ryan Braier come from. I never heard him mentioned.

    He is an ideal RBI guy (high average, lots of power) and he has Betts and Beni as high on base percentage people in front of him. The bottom of the order didn't contribute much tonight but the top is strong enough to make it happen.

    who should we trade for or get to improve the team? Moon had some sensible advice of waiting to the deadline before getting another acquisition. He suggested it for two reasons. 1. We have limited trade chips and financial resources and might have to lose a salary to take on another and stay under the luxury tax penalty cap. 2. We might get an injury that would change the priority of who we look to acquire. We have just sustained that injury in Vaz and he will take around 8 weeks to heal and another period to get back to ML ready. That could mean mid September so we might put that position as the highest priority. My view is that we could use help now at SP, RP, 2nd Base, CF and now catcher. I personally think it is between a quality long reliever and a catcher if I was the one setting the priorities. We shall see.

    I'd put Pearse in that category. Older guy but a contributor. Hoope Cora uses him wisely.

    If you can get Sandy 4 days a week, that would be a lot. That means Swihart for 3.

    Yes, I have him by 50 years and it is his pinky finger which might be less of a bother.

    We got the win but I had just eaten dinner and wound up with heartburn.

    I broke a finger on my left hand player a hard ground ball 3 weeks ago and have been wearing a splint since. The prognosis is mid August to be back to normal. I mention that as an idea of how long Vaz is likely to be out. I would guess a good 8 weeks.

    Beni rising again. Last two days on base 9 of 10. Definition of a table setter.

    Not much guess work there. I brought it up yesterday as another possible fit. What people ask for and what they get aren't always the same thing.

    Did Kelly get injured last night? He was pulled mid inning for Workman when he was doing fine.

    Been a while since he hit one. Nice insurance. He needs to pull the ball more often. 4 walks and a HR. I'd call that a great night. Oh yeah, an RBI and 3 runs scored. They don't have him steal in front of JD, neither would I.

    The walk drawn by Devers and the single by Vaz for 2 RBI are big for the team. We don't need a lot of that but they have to keep producing something and consistently. Leon has done more of late and Devers runs into one now and then. The top of the order is killer. Mookie with 3 hits, Benni with 4 consecutive walks, JBJ with hits and RBI, Moreland got his fly ball for an RBI (good hitting), their afraid of Bogie so walked him, Holt at least hit the ball. Then it was up to the bottom of the order and they came through. Now for solid relief pitching.

    That's 18 errors for Devers in just over 1/2 the season. Kid hasn't learned to make the throw. He does look more competent fielding these days.

    Hate to see relief pitchers come in and create their own issues by issuing walks.
