  1. My guess is that they will pick up the option. If they don't, then the management is intent on making a trade to acquire another starting pitcher. We need pitching depth and we can't go into spring training with one less starter. It's simply not prudent to go with Price, Porcello, E Rod, Pomeranz and Wright. Kelly needs to stay in the bullpen. $13M might be much cheaper than giving up players and picking up the salary of acquired pitcher. If things are going smoothly without Buch, then we can trade him in August.
  2. I've been critical of Shaw but he can't do much worse vs lefthanders than Hill. If we only have kept Beltre.
  3. Thank you
  4. That makes sense. Therefore, because competitive balance tax (luxury tax) is based on year end figures, Aaron Hill's prior trade salary is not picked up by anyone, correct? I was trying to duplicate your luxury tax analysis. I count about 10 or so arbitration eligible players on our 40 man roster (I maybe off by few), do you have an estimate on total incremental cost for next year on these players (Betts, Bradley, Kelly, Pomeranz, Ross, etc)?
  5. Question for the board For Aaron Hill, what is his salary for the purpose of luxury tax calculation? He signed a 3 yr $35M contract or avg value of say $12M. I'm assuming Sox are responsible for the full amount, no? Moon?
  6. http://boston.locals.baseballprospectus.com/2016/09/21/the-curious-case-of-red-sox-catchers/ Good read on Sox catching situation, particularly for 2017
  7. This has been a good year. Somehow Ortiz was able to coax contributions from entire group in his final season. You hear about a team playing for their manager. I believe our young players are playing so well partly to honor Ortiz in his final season. It's a small payback for his support, encouragement and maybe tough love when they needed it. They all have great respect for Ortiz. Not sure how it will end but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Sox win it all with Ortiz right in middle of it.
  8. I'd feel much better If Moncada can contribute the way Beni has......I hate platooning players. I want him to take the job. I sometimes try to agitate the board with some contrarian views but this has been an enjoyable season...
  9. Maybe, maybe him throwing from stretch has helped him minimize his lack of control issues. I didn't like it that he was falling off the mound when over throwing his fastballs..... You can see why some fall in love with him when he has all of his pitches going..... Yeah, he's worth $13M if he can give us quality starts...
  10. He said after the game he's been facing too many two strike situations........smart kid....glad we have him for another six years... For me, locking up Betts is the first priority for Sox. Then Bradley Jr. That's an outstanding outfield.
  11. All is well.... So glad to have Beni back in the lineup.... Here's to hoping Wright can come back and pitch a gem before the playoffs Here's to Xander, Bradley Jr and Sandy coming out of their recent funk. I remember watching Clay B hurl a no hitter against Baltimore.....he pitched last night like what I thought he'd be after watching him throw a no hitter.....wish I could erase all of his bad outings in between...
  12. Good outfielders......now fix 3B
  13. Benintendi with a 3 run Homer to shut down the O's....He's a keeper.
  14. Travis Shaw sucks.....keep watching strikes go by......I hate his f***ing demeanor.....so snug. Go f***ing sit down. Nobody out with 2 runners. good grief.
  15. I'd hold out on extending Xander. Boras client. Hitting .219 and .231 last two months. Not getting on base for Ortiz and Betts. Looks more and more medicore to me. How long will his batting slump last? He's just an average shortstop defensively. Extend Betts. Give him what he wants.
  16. We need base runners in front of Ortiz and Betts.
  17. Xander is hitting .230 in September following .219 in August..... Killing us in 2nd spot
  18. Here comes the meltdown.
  19. Quit being a punk Xander....
  20. Hill can't hit.
  21. It's fun watching our OF playing defense. They chase down many balls.
  22. It took our offense to be better by 100 runs to secure 4 game lead in AL East as of this morning. Why would anyone think we can win next year scoring less? Everyone on the planet says we can't replace Ortiz. So we do nothing? Do you honestly believe that's what DD will do? I seriously doubt it. Offense in baseball is very different. There's a 'team' component to it. Think of difference between say Hanigan versus what Sandy did. That impacts every hitter in Boston lineup. Baseball is unique in that it's a team sport but you can have best player at each position and there's no chemistry issue strictly on baseball matters. All nine batters get to hit. There's no sharing of one ball as in basketball where team chemistry/composition is very critical. To suggest you can go from Ortiz who has clearly had the BEST pre-retirement year in baseball history to say we'll just hope bunch of others can fill in as DH on their day off is astounding.
  23. This..+1000......DD has to answer to Henry. Question will be how do we replace Ortiz? DD "Hanley", Henry, "what about 1B?" "Well, we're hoping......." DD is NOT stupid. He will need action plan. Does anyone honestly believe DD will tell Henry that we led the majors by 100 runs so we have plenty of room to become inefficient and still lead the league in runs scored? My counter arguement would be but we only won by 4 games while out scoring others by 100 runs. "we're hoping for combination of things to occur"....Do you think that line of reasoning will also work with Henry? Otherwise, we're back to Ben Cherington's idea of no ace but don't worry we have five #2 pitchers scenario. How did that work out?
  24. I still would like to know what it would take to get one of the White Sox starters... If they are 'rebuilding', why would they be interested in say Bradley Jr or Xander? Aren't the two out of their price range at some point? So if they are truly in rebuilding mode I'm guessing they want young talent. If I'm White Sox, Beni, Swihart and Rodriques might do the trick. Is Beni untouchable? Can we plug in Moncada in LF? Or do we substitue Moncada for Beni? And if that trade is made, will we go big and sign a power bat? We still have Young in LF for another year. C Sandy 1B Hanley 2B Pedey SS Xander 3B Shaw LF Young CF Bradley Jr RF Betts DH Encarnacion SP Porcello, Price, Sales, Pomeranz, Wright, Johnson. Clay B will relieve Sox of $13M which can be used to pay Sales. Having someone as good as Sales makes our team more 'balanced'. Is the differential in production between Sales and Rodriquez big enough to offset losing Beni who may have 15 years in majors?
  25. I beg to differ. No one will give up anything of value for Pedey.
