  1. Barnes still sucks.....he started this mess....he just looks like a big pussy on the mound
  2. Shaw looking good at the plate.....do we really want him as our full time starting 3B? He hasn't hit since May.
  3. Few are suggesting we can compensate the loss internally. I doubt FO is penciling in Pablo as a replacement without a back up plan. You know, the great one that got beat out by Travis Shaw that's part of worst 'position' producer for current Sox.
  4. The Marlins announced that starter Jose Fernandez was killed in a boating accident on Sunday morning, confirming multiple earlier reports. The news was originally reported by David Dwork of CBS Miami and confirmed soon after by Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal. The U.S. Coast Guard said that Fernandez was one of three killed in the accident, according to the Associated Press. Sunday’s game between the Marlins and Braves has been canceled. The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time. Today's game against the Atlanta Braves has been cancelled. The 24-year-old was in his fourth year at the major league level. He’s been with the Marlins for his entire baseball career and was a fan favorite on the team. He had defected from Cuba in 2008 to play baseball in the United States. Fernandez had posted a 2.29 FIP in 29 games this year, which leads MLB, and averaged 12.5 strikeouts per nine, one of the highest in baseball. The Coast Guard held a press conference at 10:30 a.m. ET, stating the 32-foot SeaVee boat was identified between 3 and 3:30 a.m. Initially, two divers found two bodies underneath the boat and a third was later found in the water on the south side of a jetty at the Port of Miami. Tragic......Sad day for baseball
  5. FO was in full force at the trade deadline. Can you imagine this group sitting at a table and NOT one person bringing up the fact that our DH is not returning for 2017 season? It's DD's job to do everything he can to win the division again. It's silly to think we'll stand pat.
  6. Beni did not start the night before in favor of Holt. Probably nothing.
  7. Had Moncada been called up sooner, he would have just stood there instead of diving back to second and getting hurt. Stupid mental error by Wright.
  8. Why are we resting 22 year old against a right handed pitcher....that's two straight games
  9. So Moncada made one mental mistake or two and now he's vanished forever? This is why I hate JF. He has his favorites and he keeps couple of guys in his dog house. Of course no one else on this roster ever made running errors this season. And they were seasoned veterans. Good f***ing grief.
  10. Is he Cy Young worthy? His stats say yes....and he passes the eye test.
  11. I wouldn't be doing back flips over 25th in mlb.
  12. I think LF will be fine with Beni there full season. Obviously we're settling with Shaw at 3B. I'm not sure where the upside is with his skill set.
  13. I still would prefer one extra arm over a bat.....just in case.
  14. We simply don't have enough pitching in our farm system to give up on someone even as volatile as Clay B. I wouldn't be completely surprised if we extend him sometime during next year. I also think Clay wants to be in Boston. He doesn't seem to be a guy that would adjust well in another environment. Two years at $35M with team friendly options should do the trick.
  15. Good point about retaining all three, Betts, Bradley Jr and Bogaerts maybe difficult. That would lead me to believe someone like Benintendi is untouchable. He's under team control for what, another six years? (at least five) Why would you even think about trading him? You need low cost control guys to go with high end players which we will certainly have in couple of years. Luckily, Pablo and Hanley contracts will be coming off the books as free agent signings will be pending on some of our younger players. Swihart could be another option in left field, moving Beni over to center field. Moncada could also play outfield, depending on Devers' progress but it would also be nice to simply plug in Moncada at 3B for next ten years. Sox can be in thick of things for next three years. Porcello (3), Pomeranz (2), E Rod (4+), Price (2 or 6), Wright (4+) can be counted on to provide quality starts. We'll need some pitching depth but it's good place to start.
  16. My guess is that they will pick up the option. If they don't, then the management is intent on making a trade to acquire another starting pitcher. We need pitching depth and we can't go into spring training with one less starter. It's simply not prudent to go with Price, Porcello, E Rod, Pomeranz and Wright. Kelly needs to stay in the bullpen. $13M might be much cheaper than giving up players and picking up the salary of acquired pitcher. If things are going smoothly without Buch, then we can trade him in August.
  17. I've been critical of Shaw but he can't do much worse vs lefthanders than Hill. If we only have kept Beltre.
  18. Thank you
  19. That makes sense. Therefore, because competitive balance tax (luxury tax) is based on year end figures, Aaron Hill's prior trade salary is not picked up by anyone, correct? I was trying to duplicate your luxury tax analysis. I count about 10 or so arbitration eligible players on our 40 man roster (I maybe off by few), do you have an estimate on total incremental cost for next year on these players (Betts, Bradley, Kelly, Pomeranz, Ross, etc)?
  20. Question for the board For Aaron Hill, what is his salary for the purpose of luxury tax calculation? He signed a 3 yr $35M contract or avg value of say $12M. I'm assuming Sox are responsible for the full amount, no? Moon?
  21. http://boston.locals.baseballprospectus.com/2016/09/21/the-curious-case-of-red-sox-catchers/ Good read on Sox catching situation, particularly for 2017
  22. This has been a good year. Somehow Ortiz was able to coax contributions from entire group in his final season. You hear about a team playing for their manager. I believe our young players are playing so well partly to honor Ortiz in his final season. It's a small payback for his support, encouragement and maybe tough love when they needed it. They all have great respect for Ortiz. Not sure how it will end but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Sox win it all with Ortiz right in middle of it.
  23. I'd feel much better If Moncada can contribute the way Beni has......I hate platooning players. I want him to take the job. I sometimes try to agitate the board with some contrarian views but this has been an enjoyable season...
  24. Maybe, maybe him throwing from stretch has helped him minimize his lack of control issues. I didn't like it that he was falling off the mound when over throwing his fastballs..... You can see why some fall in love with him when he has all of his pitches going..... Yeah, he's worth $13M if he can give us quality starts...
