In light of how poorly this team was doing before this stretch, I guess it's not so unreal. Personally, I've been expecting this team to bust out any minute now for months and months. I think that is what shocks me. We seem to be getting worse. I realize my expectations might have been bloated, but this is pretty bad what we are seeing now. We overvalued Betts and Xander. We were ready to commit $55M to these two one hit wonders. DD will make another big splash this off season, and he needs to.

Carson Smith was expected to be activated by the Red Sox on Monday. It's unclear if he'll be activated now though after being struck in the leg with a line drive during his final rehab outing for Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday. He left the game immediately but he did walk off the field. Sometime Universe is against you......

I just don't like the make up of this team. It's not balanced. It's good to have speed only if they can get on base. That's not what's happening. Also, small does not mean fast. Pedroia is one of the worst runners in majors. He got no speed. There was a time he was quick, but he's never been a speed guy. This is why I wouldn't fall in love with our team right now. The mix is all wrong. We solved one problem with call up of Devers. Unfortunately we're stuck with Hanley for two more years, getting one of worst production out of DH spot in the league. (and for a guy playing in hitter's park). We got what we paid for at 1B. Another hitting position that has not produced much offense. We need to come to terms with Dustin at 2B. He is going to spend more and more time on DL. His body won't withstand rigors of 162 games, especially not the way he plays. He does not possess elite body. He can't abuse it 162 times a year. He just can't. Our SS position is a mess. His playing time is only justified by his offensive output. If he can't hit, then we need to get a better glove. He will never be a good defensive shortstop. You either got it or you don't. Our catching tandem is just fine. They will not be the reason we lose. Beni is fine only because he's a rookie. Again, I look at LF as power position, a la Manny Ramirez. He's a cheap option. JBJ to me is our best outfielder. CF should be an elite defensive position and we have an elite defender with some power and speed. Not sure where Betts norm is right now, is it this year or last? To me, he would be a very good center fielder. But I'd like to see my right fielder hit little more. (thus I would not be opposed to Betts and Xander as center piece for trade for Stanton) Yeah we're in first place. But this is not a good offensive team. Thus it's a team that's had success mainly due to pitching. This is why you don't ever pass up on acquiring an ace. Sox would have been dead in water had it not been for Sale trade.

Why would you pay $25-$30M for a singles hitter? This team needs power. Only game we won vs Yankees was due to 3 home runs accounting for all 4 runs. It's one thing to have 5 or 6 .300 hitters in the lineup to string together base hits. But we don't even have that.

Just as you and I agree on going for a top of the rotation guy, a player such as Stanton doesn't come along too often. We should kick the tires. You never know how desperate the seller is until you ask.

Xander had stated on record that his hand is bothering him. He made the comment after he hit a rare pulled homer recently.

It's not so much being critical of Beni as much as don't lump him in same level as JBJ and Betts. To me, their defense is far superior from watching and not looking at any metrics.

Sucks to be Marlin. Team simply does not have resources to carry one contract eating up 20% of total payroll of $100M. Price takes up 16% of Sox payroll but we are still left with $160M vs $75M for Marlins.

My guess is Fister is on DD's short list. Their history helps here. Only question is Fister may opt for assurance of starting spot and/or 2 year deal, which I don't believe Sox can offer as of now. He would be a great depth piece. You almost need 7 or 8 starters anymore.

If Xander is not good enough as a mediocre defending light hitting SS, I sure as hell don't want him playing 3B. I would prefer us get a legit, power bat at 1B and let Devers settle in at 3B. What would take for Reds to part with Votto? You said money doesn't matter. He would be a perfect fit for Red Sox. Would Beni and couple of other pieces do it? (I only bring him up because of his Cincy connection)

I know that John F thinks Sox can't survive without Holt, we need to get rid of him. His ceiling is mediocrity. We can do better.

Fans were ready to give out 10 year $300M and $250M contracts to Betts and Xander. That would be the biggest mistake we can make. Let the arbitration years go by and PAY WHAT THEY ARE WORTH when that time comes. Can we get over this 'home team discount' concept? Pay for Value, regardless of where that Value originated.

I hope we don't sign a full time DH in the future. No doubt Ortiz was the best. And he was relatively cheap in my opinion. Going forward, it's more advantageous to have a depth piece such as Nunez that can play multiple position. Give player a break and let him DH from time to time. Pedroia will require additional time off from playing 2B and he's someone that can DH for a series, as an example. He may not like it but he needs it. How much more would it cost to go from 25 to 26 rosters?

It won't be his first rodeo in mlb. I'd expect him to step in and hit.

What a bunch of pessimists......Smith has now pitched in five games, last four he did not give up a run. He's a pitcher, not a flame thrower. Unless there's a set back he will be on the roster. Last outing was with only one day of rest. He will probably need to pitch back to back games, at which point he should be ready to return.
