  1. I see now that Cora plans to use Whitlock with Hill. He obviously did not want Whitlock to sit idle waiting for #5 starter to start the season. Apparently Cora also wanted to piggyback Houck with Chris Sale. I like the plan. It allows the bullpen to reset every fifth day. I'm okay with us having 7 or 8 starters on the staff. As starter innings shorten (4-5 innings), you can't just have one inning guys. Maybe by August we'll have Eovaldi, Pivetta, Houck, Wacha, Hill, Sale, Paxton and Whitlock to start/long relieve. Only one pitcher out of five has to go long (7 innings). You can then finish out the game with the likes of Barnes, Diekman, Strahm, Taylor, Crawford and Robles. That's 13 solid pitchers.
  2. Suzuki could have lengthened our lineup. Big miss by Bloom in my opinion.
  3. Whitlock pitched 4 innings today. He came in scored tied. It should be his game to lose. He could have won vs Yankees. I love watching him pitch. Great command. Gets the ball and pitches. Thought I may see AC outsmart himself and bring in a 'closer' in the 9th.
  4. I was surprised Sox didn't go after Suzuki for RF. It's only money. We'll see how he does for the Cubs. Our farm has more infielders than outfielders.
  5. You are correct Moon. With opt outs and players wanting to get as much as they can (opt outs) and yet have the protection against subpar/injuries years, it's refreshing to see Whitlock's deal. He's with us for seven years counting this year. Much of that has to do with Sox able to get a full year of service in his rookie year. This is why I'm rooting for Houck and Dalbec. I want to see Casas join the team as soon as he's unable to get a full year of service this year.
  6. There's another poster that feels the same way. Given choice between Houck and Whitlock, Houck should be closing and Whitlock starting.
  7. Wrong. It's 2 years beyond arb control. Basically its a four year deal starting next year (yrs 3, 4, 5 and 6 for Whitlock) PLUS 2 years of club options. Having a player for 8 years (counting last year) is a long term deal in today's world.
  8. It's a great deal for Sox. We now control Whitlock for 7 more years beginning 2022. Quit worrying about extending Xander at $30M. It's about signing Story at $23M for 6 years to hedge vs Xander leaving or asking for the moon. Same goes for Devers. If Dalbec can hit the way he did the last two months of 2021, then we have 3B, SS and 1B covered. It's unrealistic to have 2 $30M infielders on left side along with a $23M 2B. No way that happens.
  9. “We are a little bit short in that end not having Barnesy, not having Whit,” Cora said. “Obviously, the matchups with them is a little bit different with the three lefties that we have. But it is what it is. I don’t think it has anything to do with the bullpen. It’s just a matter of trusting our guy going 6 where we were bullpen-wise today. Because of the Barnesy situation, we were a little bit short.” Geez how many pitchers do we need? I don't hear Yankees complain. Both their starters went shorter than ours. I love Cora's honesty. Perhaps they should not have kept 3 lefties, especially knowing that Taylor will be coming back soon. More the reason Whitlock should have went longer in game 1. It's not like we got behind with his homer. But we squandered opportunities to score. We should had bigger lead when Whitlock was on the mound.
  10. Pussifying of America continues.....my man Eovaldi threw 76 pitches. I thought Cora was thinking about Hill and Whitlock completing a 9 inning game.
  11. Cora should have left Whitlock in......why come out after just giving up one run, to make it a tie ball game. He's better than anyone else. There is no way Brasier was going to get out without giving up a run with inheriting a runner on second. He's hittable.
  12. I don't think Diekman and Robles are similar type pitchers. Maybe they share similar stats. One is a power pitcher, the other a finesse.
  13. In 2014, Dodgers signed a 25 year, $8.35B TV deal. It's estimated that Dodgers earn annual, local TV revenue of $204M per fangraphs. Red Sox comes in fourth at $80M, behind Angels' $118M and Yankees' $98M. Poor Rays at $20M. Yep, life is not fair.
  14. Dodgers' luxury tax payroll now up to $297M after Kimbrel trade. That's AFTER deduction for $16M relief from Red Sox for Price. They don't have any issues spending money.
  15. I bet two run sacrifice fly is rarer than a no hitter.
  16. Ok, I take back every bad comment about JBJ. A homer. I was dead set against Kike leading off too.
  17. Now that Free Games are over, signed up for MLB package. I can't think of a better deal on this earth. I can watch major league games for $120.
  18. Last year, with Houck on more of a developmental path, the Red Sox structured his workload with an eye on the future. This season, Houck’s role will be very much in the moment. And Cora hopes to be able to hand him the baseball every fifth day for six months. “We’re getting close to getting the final product,” Cora said. So many of you wanted him to be a reliever. Not happening. Fans here baffle me. Bitch and complain about not producing starter. When one appears to be ready, you want to keep him in bullpen. Anyone here ever compared the salaries paid to starters versus bullpen help? Do kids DREAM of becoming a reliever? You can't have enough starters. They can ALWAYS relieve. See Sale and Eovaldi when the game matters. You don't put in a #5 reliever. You put a Eovaldi in. Whitlock should start in 2023.
  19. Eovaldi acquisition was shrewd move by the Sox. When he signed, Porcello add one more year left. I always viewed that as prudent signing. Teams must anticipate future losses. We now have the shortstop position covered. I love the Story pickup. If Dalbec can continue to produce as he did after the All-Star break, then he can fill in for Devers if he leaves after 2023. Casas appears to have 1B locked. He's giving no indication he can't do it. Assuming Yorke continues to develop, he is our future 2B. NEED A CATCHER.
  20. Cot's has us at $235.8M, $5.8M over the cap and $14.2M under the second luxury tax line. That will provide us with some money at trade deadline to bolster the club. More and more I think about it, Story pickup was brilliant by Bloom. Not sure if an all-star can be had for $23.3M, approaching his prime, could play a position better than a guy that maybe leaving, someone who can play multiple positions according to those that know him (would you rather have Schwarber or Story playing left field?) and that can elevate the team profile immediately. We need an outfielder to step up from the farm or by position change. I'm hoping it's Dalbec.
  21. Wow....I'm way off on his height....
  22. Even before today's outing, I've not been impressed at all with Seabold. He just looks too small to be a starter. Yep, I guess I'm size biased. On the other hand, I'm intrigued by Fitzgerald kid. Not a big guy, but he can hit long ways.
  23. I agree with you on both counts.
  24. Interesting that Sox really does not have true rightfielder. Verdugo is a leftfielder, Kike and JBJ are center fielders.
  25. Per MLB on one goal for each team Rangers: Prove the moves were worth it The Rangers have been as aggressive as anyone in baseball this offseason, signing Corey Seager and Marcus Semien to megadeals. But there’s no question, they still have a long way to go. But you’ve got to start somewhere. They haven’t had a winning season since recording 95 wins in 2016. Their high since then has been 78, accomplished in both '17 and '19. That’s a fair target to aim toward. It's amazing to me that they can add Seager and Semien and "still have a long way to go". Perfect example of free agents alone will not get you out of a hole.
