  1. I agree that if Pablo struggles, they'll look outside of the organization before they make Rutledge or Hernandez any kind of an everyday player. They are going to get Holt in the lineup at 3rd, so I don't see Rutledge or Hernandez in any kind of platoon situation, either. I think that there would have to be some really crazy events that take place for Swihart to play any 3rd base next season. They really seem committed to him catching at this point.
  2. http://www.barstoolsports.com/boston/apparently-andrew-benintendi-has-spent-his-offseason-doing-the-rocks-hercules-workout/ Have you seen the above video?
  3. If Hernandez & Rutledge are both playing any kind of significant role later this season, my guess is that there were some serious injuries.
  4. I agree that it's always good to temper expectations with young players, but based on what I've seen & read about him, it wouldn't surprise me if he put up big numbers this year. Supposedly nothing rattles this kid. He was having lunch with Brian Johnson the other day and he knew he'd be facing him the next day. He told Johnson that he was taking him deep, which he did on the first pitch Johnson threw. Everyone talks about the "swing," but his plate discipline is advanced as well. There will be some adjustments, but I would be disappointed if he only hits 10 to 12 bombs as those projections above indicate. He has a ton of power for a kid his size. We'll see I guess.
  5. I think it's pretty safe to say that when a popular player switches teams, the sales of that player's MLB licensed jersey/t-shirts etc. increase exponentially, so my guess is that a marketing guy like Lucchino would obviously know this.
  6. Not sure what you're trying to say here. They wouldn't have tried to sell Panda apparel?
  7. I can't see how any of the ops guys in the Sox front office ever thought signing Pablo was a good idea. This reeked of Lucchino and PR from day one. "Ortiz is near the end, so let's sign another big, lovable guy with a "cute nickname" who seems to shine in the spotlight. He's perfect for this town. We need a 3rd baseman and there's not much else available, right?. He's still young, right? Can you imagine all of the "Panda" stuff we'll sell?" I wish I was kidding.
  8. I don't think "clutch" can be proven or disproven, but as I mentioned earlier, I believe that if you secretly polled every player in baseball, asking which teammate they'd want up in a big spot, I'd bet the "best hitter" on the team wouldn't be the response a lot more often than you would think.
  9. Why? Is it because he didn't want to pitch in a shirt that had a collar on it?! I wouldn't want to wear that thing, either. Those guys in the 70's were all pissed that THEY had to wear it. This team has too many guys who would never let one guy be a clubhouse cancer. Farrell is also not the type of guy who would tolerate that stuff. Sale's never pitched in the playoffs before. He wants to win badly. My guess is that he'll be an ideal teammate.
  10. Middlebrooks had plus plus power and I agree that there have obviously been plenty of hyped prospects that have failed, but I didn't see any real hole in Benintendi's game last year. He's a "natural" so to speak. As far as Middlebrooks goes, as fans, we didn't find out until later that he didn't have much interest in "practicing" baseball at all.
  11. I feel the same way about Benintendi as I did about Nomar after seeing him come up in late '96. The only thing that is going to stop this kid from being an all-star is injury. That swing is as good as it gets.
  12. I could literally counterpoint every single thing that you mention here, but this isn't the forum to do so. Let's agree to disagree and get back to baseball.
  13. One step ahead works for me. Can't wait for Origin, either. Going to cause some serious controversy as usual, but this one more so I think.
  14. I've read all of his books. Good stuff. I agree that it's cold, but a lot people that are more intelligent than most of us will tell you that there may come a point where nature will correct itself if the population keeps growing as people continue to live longer.
  15. A little off topic, but when you have a world population approaching 8 billion on a planet that supposedly has the natural resources to ideally support 4 billion, I'm not so sure how interested a lot people in high places are in finding that cure for cancer.
  16. I think Moreland's defense definitely played a huge factor, as well as that he supposedly has the right makeup to be someone who could thrive in Boston.
  17. You definitely seem to be one stubborn bastard if you don't like a move (Ryan Dempster) or a player (Brentz), but I admire your passion. Haven't heard any inside scoop on why Brentz is still around, other than he has plus power and he's a guy who doesn't fear much. He's definitely not a guy with power like Middlebrooks who put little or no effort into anything.
  18. It's all definitely debatable, but I'd be willing to bet that if you polled every player in baseball, without their answers being tied to them, on which teammate they'd want at the plate with the game on the line, the teammate with the best "stats" wouldn't be the answer a lot more often than people think.
  19. The top 4 ranked F/A starters that off season were Sabbathia/Burnett/D Lowe & Dempster. That was definitely not the off season to go after a top of the rotation guy, especially when they had Buchholz & Lester coming on. I don't think they put much stock in Buchholz' "stats" in '08. He was a young pitcher with terrific stuff.
  20. Lackey wasn't there yet, but even so, they weren't looking for a top of the rotation guy that off season. That team won 95 games, so tough to fault Theo's off season moves.
  21. Smoltz & Penny were depth signings on 1 year deals. They had Beckett/Lester/Dice K/Buchholz/Wakefield, so I doubt that they were going to go big on a starting pitcher. It's certainly debatable whether or not they "needed" a "2 or 3."
  22. Even if a guy like Smoltz never throws a pitch for them, he's a human encyclopedia of baseball knowledge. It can't possibly hurt to have a guy like that around in spring training. As you mention, low risk/high reward signings really shouldn't be scrutinized.
  23. I'd love to hear this. Do have legitimate reasoning for your theory, or are you just one of those people who like to "blame" someone or something for everything?
  24. Donnie Moore was the pitcher who killed himself over that home run. Sad. It bothered Hendu a lot.
  25. Fair enough, but since it's rare for a player to get over 200 post season at bats, especially in that era, we'll have to agree to disagree that there is no such thing as certain players who shine in the spotlight more than others. You may have "watched" the '86 playoffs, but it seems that you just don't remember much of it. When Henderson got back from Anaheim, he was treated like a god in Boston.
