  1. If the race is that close then you don't have a chance to set up the rotation the way you want in the end of the season so the pitcher depends on where they are in the rotation. Having said that, if you have a choice you throw Sale against the Yankees. Even though the wildcard is an elimination game, the two games together are a win one of two scenario and you're better off winning the first one.
  2. Wow. These numbers really show his hot/cold tendency. 3 months over 1.000 and 0 between .840 and 1.000. It makes me think he could really use a head doctor to figure out what's going on during the slumps.
  3. What was the roster move to get Pearce in?
  4. It's important to keep the big picture in mind. The sox have a lot of players who are going to require a lot of money in the not too distant future, JBJ is not one of them. Whether you think defense is overrated or underrated(like me) it isn't something that you have to pay big contracts for. In addition defense does not vary from year to year like hitting does for a lot of players. Pencil JBJ in for the next 5-10 years at CF, you get solid defense and maybe occasional offense at somewhere in the $10M per year range.
  5. It's a reasonable topic for discussion whoever it was started by. The surprising part to me is you used to seem reasonably knowledgeable about baseball, until the posts here acting like a couple months of a slump for a 21 year old with 100 games of ML service is so hard to explain. This is the norm, a player starts out hot then the league adjusts to him and we'll wait and see if he adjust back. This is the reason I hadn't worried about it too much yet.
  6. I heard the other day the redsox are 14-1 in the last game of a series this year. Is this just a statistical anomaly or a credit to Cora keeping them rested? Or is it a matter of staying focused when it matters. I know every game counts the same, but the last game always has a little added significance, either avoid a sweep, win the series or complete a sweep.
  7. Exactly, don't know why he tried to backhand that. It was like an easy groundball
  8. How long do I have to wait before I can say i'm not impressed with JD Martinez?
  9. I was a little surprised by benching Betts. I was more surprised that Cora didn't do a double switch when he brought Smith in. Extra innings already looked likely, it would have been good to get more than one batter out of him.
  10. is young still going to bat
  11. Price needs to shut them down here. Bradley then top of order will be runs.
  12. Enough of Marero. Devers better take over next time through the lineup.
  13. I remain hopeful. It's not over yet. Keuchel can be beat. Smith has to get us out of this inning.
  14. I saw that in the last 10 years, 40 5 game Division series, the team that won the 1st game won 32 out of 40, 80%. Of course causality is important here, it's not just a matter of winning the first game gives you 80% chance of winning the series. The better team is more likely to win the first game.
  15. Gotcha, that makes more sense.
  16. Shouldn't this comment be on the Judge thread?
  17. I'm actually okay with this. ERod is the only one I'd want coming out of the pen and this allows for a lightning fast hook on Porcello or Fister, if needed.
  18. Not that I'm doubting your numbers, you are the stats guru, but it seems weird that their highest position player is 5th, yet they are 5th overall. I know it's mathematically possible, just unlikely
  19. That's a little surprising. If true, smart move on the sox to wait until the Astros roster already came out.
  20. Those numbers do look bad. Do you know where the sox rank in total WAR?
  21. You are right, I should have led with, 'I agree'
  22. It is tough to measure. They need a new leverage situation of 'wicked high leverage', unfortunately it would be a small sample size. Look at playoff stats compared to regular season. Ortiz ops is higher in playoffs, not by much, but most players go down due to better pitching. I looked at a few players who have a fair amount of post-season at bats, Ortiz and Jeter went up, Chipper Jones, Manny Ramirez, A-Rod, Mickey Mantle all went down. By people who believe in clutch, Ortiz and Jeter are usually prime examples. I don't personally feel this is about upping your game, but not feeling the pressure when everyone else does.
  23. Agreed. I've seen many people say all 5 starters should be on the roster. Porcello and Fister are both horrendous in the first inning, I would hate to see those guys coming out of the pen. Rodriguez might not be too bad, but they have much better bullpen options.
  24. The sox and yankees would play a tie-breaker game. I wouldn't count on Houston resting many players, there still in the hunt for best record with Cleveland.
  25. I agree for the most part, except the fastball difference. I do think their are more pitchers throwing faster now, but also the technology to measure fastball speed has changed. There's a documentary on Netflix called 'Fastball' that talks about this. One big change is that they now are able to measure velocity shortly after the ball leaves the pitchers hand, which adds several mph to the speed.
