  1. What teams would be suitors for Nathan Eovaldi's services? Is Eovaldi too expensive for a return to Tampa Bay? Minnesota? Philadelphia? Could Eovaldi get a second chance with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the franchise that drafted the righthander in 2008?
  2. In October 2020 Tommy Pham suffered a serious injury in a stabbing outside a strip club in San Diego: https://video.foxnews.com/v/6200636455001#sp=show-clips Pham has overcome obstacles in his life: https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2017/06/15/cardinals-tommy-pham-father-prison/401048001/
  3. Chaim Bloom comes through big time today. IMHO
  4. For years a Seattle broadcaster and two lesser Mariners would tour the Pacific Northwest in January on the Mariner Caravan. At one stop I got to see up close Daniel Vogelbach, whom I found funny and self-deprecating. Vogelbach will always be remembered as the Chris Farley lookalike when Mariner rookies were hazed in 2016: https://www.tmz.com/2016/09/29/seattle-mariners-rookie-gets-chris-farley-treatment/
  5. FWIW Triston Casas homered Sunday for Worcester: https://www.milb.com/gameday/red-sox-vs-bisons/2022/07/31/666332#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=666332
  6. Could you two take your spat outside? You're ruining the ambiance of this joint.
  7. Six of Seattle's next 10 games are against the New York Yankees but the remaining schedule is considered soft. I hope Julio Rodriguez will return in time to face the Yankees in an August 10 afternoon game I plan to attend in Seattle.
  8. Five years have passed since the midseason trade that sent J.D. Martinez from Detroit to Arizona where in 257 plate appearances Martinez posted a .302/.366/.741/1.107 line with 29 homers to lead the Diamondbacks into the postseason. Martinez may not have that gas left in the tank.
  9. The postseason chances of the 50-52 Red Sox have dropped to 20 percent at FanGraphs and FiveThirtyEight: https://www.fangraphs.com/standings/playoff-odds https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2022-mlb-predictions/ What is a reasonable plan as Tuesday's trade deadline approaches?
  10. Why does this forum, despite its great potential for serious MLB discussion, devolve into personal attacks?
  11. Luis Castillo, who is 17 months older than Jose Berrios, has posted 16.5 fWAR in 792.1 career innings while Berrios has posted 15.5 fWAR in 959 innings. The midseason trades involved comparable Top 100 prospects: Double A prospects Austin Martin and Simeon Woods Richardson for Berrios and Single A prospects Noelvi Marte and Edwin Arroyo for Castillo. The Mariners added longshots Levi Stoudt and Andrew Moore to seal the Castillo deal. Time may tell whether either or both trades were overpays. Or not.
  12. The Cincinnati Reds have now traded two of my fantasy team's players -- Jesse Winker and Luis Castillo -- to the Seattle Mariners this year. With a 28-man roster that includes Castillo, Winker, Julio Rodriguez, Ty France, Robbie Ray, Logan Gilbert, Marco Gonzales, Eugenio Suarez*, George Kirby, Cal Raleigh and Jarred Kelenic, my fantasy team is not all that competitive in a 10-team mixed league. But it's a fun team for this Seattle fan to follow. * Winker was a keeper from last year's fantasy team but Suarez was taken at the fantasy auction after his trade to Seattle
  13. Baseball Trade Values gave righthander Luis Castillo a surplus value of $41.2 million and the package of Noelvi Marte, Edwin Arroyo, Levi Stoudt and Andrew Moore a combined surplus value of $63.1 million: https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trades/trade-98509/ This Seattle fan was surprised the Mariners would trade both shortstop prospects -- Marte and Arroyo -- in a midseason deal. Baseball Trade Values would have approved the trade with Arroyo out of the package.

  15. "Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people." Eleanor Roosevelt
  16. Baseball forums are filled with delusional fans who think they can run an MLB front office better than the front office professionals.
  17. That's one reason why Triston McKenzie, who turns 25 on the trade deadline, has $25.1 million in surplus trade value at Baseball Trade Values: https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/players/8862/
  18. We're at the stage where buyers are making low-ball offers and sellers are holding out for better offers as the deadline approaches. Except the Yankees and Royals apparently.
  19. Heading into Sunday's games Juan Soto had posted 21.3 fWAR in 557 career games while Rafael Devers had posted 18.0 fWAR in 635 career games. ZiPS projects Soto with 7.9 and 7.7 WAR over the next two seasons while projecting Devers with 4.5 and 4.6 WAR over the same period. https://www.fangraphs.com/players/ju...ts?position=OF https://www.fangraphs.com/players/ra...ts?position=3B
  20. Trivia: In a 2014 college game started by Stanford righthander Cal Quantrill, the winning pitcher was Arizona righthander Bobby Dalbec: https://gostanford.com/sports/2014/5/9/Stats_18911.aspx
  21. The Red Sox reportedly acquired outfielder Abraham Almonte for cash: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/07/red-sox-acquire-abraham-almonte-from-brewers.html
  22. Heading into Sunday's games Juan Soto had posted 21.3 fWAR in 557 career games while Rafael Devers had posted 18.0 fWAR in 635 career games. ZiPS projects Soto with 7.9 and 7.7 WAR over the next two seasons while projecting Devers with 4.5 and 4.6 WAR over the same period. https://www.fangraphs.com/players/juan-soto/20123/stats?position=OF https://www.fangraphs.com/players/rafael-devers/17350/stats?position=3B
  23. The Red Sox were not the only team to swept at home after entering the weekend with a winning record.
  24. 538 has the Red Sox at 30 percent: https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2022-mlb-predictions/ It's been a miserable week for the Red Sox but they're still just three games back of the third and final Wild Card slot (currently held by the falling Seattle Mariners thanks in part to the Sox ineptitude against the Blue Jays;))
  25. The Red Sox chances for a postseason berth are down to 28.8 percent as I write at 8:29 pm EST: https://www.fangraphs.com/standings/playoff-odds
