Since the Red Sox claimed their last World Series title in 2018 the Sox have won only four more regular-season games than the Mariners despite Seattle's 94-loss season in 2019. Over the past three seasons the Red Sox have a regular-season record of 188-186 (despite falling two games shy of the World Series in 2021) while the Mariners have been 200-174. Baseball has often gone in cycles.

Of course it depends on the circumstances. In the past month the Seattle Mariners have signed long-term extensions with Julio Rodriguez and Luis Castillo, each with risks and rewards.

That's why the league-adjusted wRC+ is a more meaningful measure of minor league hitting statistics. At Triple A this year Jo Adell posted a wRC+ of 117 in 180 plate appearances while Jeter Downs posted a wRC+ of 95 in 335 plate appearances.

FWIW over the past 10 months the Seattle Mariners have handed out three nine-figure contracts (and likely have approached Cal Raleigh, Logan Gilbert and George Kirby about early-career extensions).

Throwing another name out there: Cody Bellinger if the Los Angeles Dodgers non-tender the 27-year-old as speculated. Bellinger, who this season has a $17 million salary in the second-to-last year of team control, has 16 Defensive Runs Saves over 2820.2 career innings in center field. The 2019 NL MVP has posted 1.3 fWAR in 131 games this season despite a woeful 78 wRC+. Everyone presumably would give Kiki Hernandez the clear defensive edge over Adam Frazier in center field. This season and in the foreseeable future the Seattle Mariners are fortunate to have a better option in center field.

One-year, two-year and careers stats are provided to provide a more comprehensive view than a single stat standing alone. A reader can choose to incorporate any stat into a valuation ... or ignore every stat. It was noteworthy that Kiki Hernandez and Adam Frazier experienced their career years in 2021 at the same age. Hence, the inclusion of their 2021 WAR and wRC+ totals.

FWIW this season Adam Frazier has played more positions, including every position Kiki Hernandez has played. However, Frazier lacks Hernandez's reputation in center field, a critical defensive position.
